I am little and a bit fat (14) and quite old.

I’d like to buy one or two nice things to freshen up my wardrobe for spring. Not a coat or boots or a bag.

Ideally these one or two things will be able to take me to the pub or out to a nice restaurant, without being too dressy.

I wear a lot of black, so maybe something that isn’t black might be nice. I suit slim flare or rolled up jeans, various dresses and pencil skirts. I hate belts. Think I’m somewhere between an apple and a fat hourglass. I quite fancy something red, maybe, or some going out trousers that aren’t jeans.

Any suggestions very welcome to force me to look at things I wouldn’t normally look at. I hate polyester and have mixed feelings about viscose!

@Floisme Totally agree re the cardigans. If the colours were better I would absolutely order it and wear a cotton T-shirt underneath. The shape and sleeves feel much more current than the others.

I like that H&M popover but again the colours are all wrong for me, annoyingly, unless I stick with black as always.

I've had a couple of a wrap / faux-wrap tops from Baukjen, which can either be dressed up or worn with jeans etc. I had a look this morning and there's quite a few different tops on their outlet page. I like this one - it might not be your style but there may be some others on there that catch your eye.

Why are all the tops so short? My mid section is not in good shape

Isabelle70 · 11/02/2024 11:59

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I think you have described me :) I am struggling to find a nice blouse/top that fits nicely. I think I might get banned by JL and M&S as I have ordered and returned in excess of £800 of tops and none of them were any good.
I hate clothes and much prefer handbags!

I find 'nice tops' very hard to find these days. Most of them are in horrible fabrics, or have really high necks.

I've fallen a bit in love with the shape of this but I don't like any of the colours and I think the quality/fabric might be pretty poor.

You said you like clothes that have colour and a bit different. Check out Joe Brown online. They have a multitude of clothing with colour and a bit more muted mixed. I love Joe Browns

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2024 12:31

Thanks, @keffie12 I don't really like much colour, but am trying to find something that isn't black for a change.

Joe Browns (other than a couple of cotton sun dresses) isn't really my style, sorry.

Not shiny at all and you can really see the texture of the denim.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2024 13:56

Sorry, but I think those silver trousers are really, really horrible. Apologies to anybody who likes them, but I'd frankly rather go out in my knickers!

OP posts:
Mumsnut · 11/02/2024 15:44

🤣. Fair enough. Not to worry you , but going out in your knickers is apparently the latest trend.

so you could save a bob or two …

Lentilweaver · 11/02/2024 15:50

I was mooching around in some charity shops in a posh part of London today and saw so many nice jumpers and wrap tops, all in 100% wool or cashmere, in pretty decent colours. Was in a rush, so didn't have time to try on, but I am going back next week. I always forget to check charity shops before the high street, but I should.

Wonders if the people of Birmingham are quite ready for my M&S Flexifits?!

Sorry, Britpop. I don't like that and it definitely wouldn't like me. My crop top days are long over.

Just put a plastic raincoat over your M and S knickers, a la Mrs Kanye West.

Britpopbaby · 11/02/2024 16:20

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I give up 😂😂😂 seriously though I hope that you get some good suggestions as I have teals your posts and you seem a very stylish lady. I hope you find your way out of your fashion void soon.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2024 16:33

@Lentilweaver Can you imagine?!

@Britpopbaby Sorry to be a pain. You're clearly more stylish than I am! I think the problem is that I want to go a bit out of my comfort zone, but nothing outside it feels me enough!

OP posts:
Britpopbaby · 11/02/2024 17:26

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I was joking!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/02/2024 17:40

I realised you were being tongue in cheek @Britpopbaby but I also know I’m being very fussy!

@Lentilweaver I was actually looking at that shirt earlier and might try it in black, although I really do fancy a nice red cottage n blouse of some sort.

Please can anyone help me find a lookalike replacement for my jacket. It must be 15 years old and as its faux leather is disintegrated when I wore it out last night :( originally from New Look.

Ideas please for a bit of an update

nzeire I share your passion for Masha…I have 3 blouses!

AmaryllisChorus · 12/02/2024 06:17

BurningTheToast · 11/02/2024 11:34

@AmaryllisChorus

I wear them either with chunky slightly cropped chunky jumpers - Nordic yoke necked fairisles are very fashionable right now but also classics so won't date - but chunky knits give fattening silhouettes, so mostly I wear long soft merino/cashmere tunics - very flattering.

May I ask where you're buying your long soft merino/cashmere tunics please? All the ones I find are a bit short or skimpy in their sizing or thin and bobble on sight.

From Woolovers, when they have a sale on!

This would be no good for you as polyester , but is it getting any closer on style?
