A dental appointment. Nothing you can buy over the counter will have the strength to whiten your teeth.

Giv0iw · 08/02/2024 20:41

Colgate strips definitely work from Amazon. Whitening toothpaste also.

RitaConnors · 08/02/2024 20:51

I've been using this because I had a dental I plan before covid and I noticed that the fake tooth was looking whiter than my actual teeth. It's definitely worked because I have the implant to compare it to.

Crest 1 hour whitening strips with the LED light which you can buy online for about £85. Honestly brilliant.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 08/02/2024 22:50

Those of you that have used the strips, did it make your teeth sensitive?

Hepherlous · 09/02/2024 08:01

I have sensitive teeth and the crest strips do make them more sensitive for a few hours after use but putting sensodyne tooth paste on them takes care of it

pharmachameleon · 09/02/2024 08:38

The US Crest whitening strips are honestly the best. Even my dentist recommended using them. I got my teeth whitened at my dentist years ago and got the moulds to wear at home with gel bleach. However I hated it as the gel used to come out of the moulds and bleach my gums and tasted horrible. Much prefer just popping on a Crest strip for an hour or two at home and have lovely white teeth afterwards!

Lollygaggle · 09/02/2024 08:39

It is illegal to sell crest strips in the U.K. ,EU or many other countries because they contain more than the safe amount of hydrogen peroxide.

Therefore if you buy the strips you are using someone who is knowingly ,crimally breaking the law and because proctor and gamble will not supply the strips for export in this way there is a high chance of counterfeit or expired , short dated strips.

Are you really happy to put something inside your body a criminal has sold you with no guarantee it is what it says it is? https://press.which.co.uk/whichpressreleases/illegal-teeth-whitening-products-widely-available-on-online-marketplaces-which-warns/

The ingredient which does the work here is calcium carbonate ie chalk. All it does is rub away stain and eventually tooth enamel.
It is just very expensively packaged chalk.

I buy the strips from an Irish company I think or just buy them if I'm ever on holiday in America. They're in every drugstore in America. If they are deemed safe to use in litigious America then I'm totally fine using them here in the UK. I'm also comforted as my dentist uses them too!

The difference is you are buying them legally in America , with all the protection that affords , here you are buying them from criminals in Ireland or elsewhere where they are also illegal.

It is legal for a dental professional to purchase some of these products but many have too high a level of chemical even for a dentist to purchase legally.

Proctor and Gamble will not sell them for export so where are these strips coming from , what guarantee do you have they are what they say they are and not counterfeit and that they are safe?

people have ended up with horrendous burns. Here one person ended up in hospital on morphine after suffering horrendous burns , the people supplying the strips were prosecuted https://www.tradingstandards.uk/news-policy-campaigns/news-room/2016/teeth-whitening-prosecution-success/

here is someone prosecuted for importing strips illegally http://www.publicanalyst.com/news/article/manfined_over_100000_over_tooth_whitening_strips

Ok @Lollygaggle. We'll agree to disagree here. I've never had an issue and have used these for about 15 years. Thank you for the info though.

Unfortunately many other people have not been so fortunate, including this person who compounded the problem by seeing an illegal beautician tooth whitener after discharge from hospital https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3193597/Sales-assistant-22-got-hole-throat-nearly-died-using-tooth-whitening-kit-try-smile-like-Channing-Tatum.html

I have seen many people with damage from illegal whitening and it's a shame there are still those making money from criminally selling illegal products.

Man, 22, left with hole in throat after using tooth whitening kit

Jake Barrett, from Rushton, Northamptonshire, was left with a grape-sized sac of peroxide bleach under his tongue after he suffered a rare reaction to the Crest 1hr Express Strips.

WhyIOughtTo · 09/02/2024 12:40

I'm no expert but that article says

'While it is possible that some of these chemical ingredients could lighten your teeth, a recent study published in the British Dental Journal found that they could also potentially damage tooth enamel, especially when the kits were used for longer than as directed.
However, more research is needed in this area as the study was fairly small scale and had certain limitations.'

Lollygaggle · 09/02/2024 12:43

That study was about ingredients used in legal strips that you can legally buy and sell in the U.K. ie sodium citrate etc

We know the ingredients in whitening strips which contain hydrogen peroxide have health concerns not only for tooth damage but also for oral cancer which is why they are banned in the U.K. ,EU , New Zealand and Australia etc

Giv0iw · 09/02/2024 14:41

MissAtomicBomb1 · 08/02/2024 22:50

Those of you that have used the strips, did it make your teeth sensitive?

I imagine they do any whitening product will take the enamel off your teeth. I've seen the links posted below too I guess you need to be careful about what you are buying and using on your teeth. Unless it's from your dentist!

castawave · 10/02/2024 12:31

Go to your dentist. That way if you have an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients, if external resorption starts to occur, if you develop sensitivity, or if the whitening gel burn your gums, you have a REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL who can advise and help.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 10/02/2024 13:41

I've been using crest supreme strips for about 20 years. They're excellent and only need doing twice a year.

Never had any sensitivity

Not only are these illegal for the public to buy in the U.K. , Europe ,New Zealand and Australia they have 14% hydrogen peroxide which is over double what a dentist is legally able to use (6% hydrogen peroxide) .

These laws were brought in to protect public health in all these countries. To be using a product that even a dentist can't legally use seems an interesting choice . Especially since ,ost people would see sensitivity , gum burning and possible nerve damage at this percentage.

EasternStandard · 10/02/2024 14:00

@Lollygaggle fair points. Do you recommend anything?

Lollygaggle · 10/02/2024 14:00

The amazing thing with all of this is that looking at the price of illegally sourced and sold , possibly counterfeit strips it wouldn't take long to afford teeth whitening with a professional who knows your mouth is healthy enough and the products are legitimate.

Then once you have the trays at £10 to £20 ish for a top up tube of gel it's a lot cheaper than whitening strips , healthier and supervised by someone who is a healthcare professional .

Lollygaggle · 10/02/2024 14:03

EasternStandard · 10/02/2024 14:00

@Lollygaggle fair points. Do you recommend anything?

You cannot buy anything over the counter which can , legally, contain enough hydrogen peroxide or carbamine peroxide to whiten.

Any other ingredients are acid or abrasive and will damage tooth as they dissolve or abrade away stain.

For £250 or cheaper you can get a professional to do it , you have they trays and in future all you have to do is buy the gels from your dentist when you go for a check up.

I did get it done years ago professionally and stupidly lost the trays

Do they have an expiry period? Might make me feel a bit better about losing ££

It was about 15 years ago or more actually

Lollygaggle · 10/02/2024 14:06

Most trays , looked after properly will last years . Sorry to say that.
