I'd like recommendations too please

thefallen · 08/02/2024 07:26

Go on then, @boopboopbidoop - please tell me what's going to give the same coverage and last as long and make me not look apparently totally shit.

@boopboopbidoop which new formulas last 16 to 20 hours like DW and give a glow?
I'll definitely try it, I'm not angry at new information, I embrace it, it's why I love S & B on Mumsnet.
I'm always happy to try new things, I'm just stating a fact that I have never found a foundation for me that lasts and doesn't transfer like DW but I'm definitely open to recommendations.

Dior Forever (various finishes. I haven't tried the 'nude' finish but as the others are amazing I assume that one is also) 24hr
Givenchy Tient couture Everwear 24hr
Guerlain l'essential haute perfection 24hr
Makeup Forever HD skin
YSL All Hours

I also find Chanel Ultra le Teint Velvet and No.1 de Chanel last a good 10 hours when prepped and set well.

I am a foundation nerd.

I am 54 and have used ELDW for over 20 years. I have at times tried other foundations, even really high end ones, but always go back to ELDW. Recently I bought Armani's Luminous Skin and although it looks pretty good when on, it makes my eyes itch and water like crazy. I have realised that it's probably the alcohol in it.

I have noticed lately that my usual ELDW looks a bit cakey and would like a change. I have been wondering about EL Futurist Hydra Rescue. If I was to try this, would I go for the same colour? For me it's always been Fresco, which seems to be a total skin match, but I do look sallow and have to add some foundation powder/bronzer on top.

boopboopbidoop · 08/02/2024 07:33

There is a Mac waterproof one that I think is pretty good too. Tbh there are loads now. The technology has advanced so much in the past few years that foundations have more 'flex' in them and they stay on without having to be so dry.

Also imo, as our skin aged it often gets drier so we don't need the same products as all foundations tend to stay on better anyway due to fewer oils in the skin.

Rina66 · 08/02/2024 07:43

I've tried the MAC, YSL and Dior and they don't last on me. I'll definitely try Guerlain (have used their bronzer for as long as the DW), Givenchy and Make Up Forever.

I too am a foundation junkie!

I've also tried lots of the cheaper versions, L'Oreal and Maybelline both claim over 30 hours wear 🙄 - I think they must have just tested the models after 30 hours to see if there was a smidgeon of foundation left anywhere to substantiate these claims!

Brightandbubly · 08/02/2024 08:06

loving all the tips there is sooooo much to go on, so many brands …..

I think it's more that we know you could get the same longevity and^^ a skin like finish whilst covering what you want with some newer formulas. No one thinks you are stupid. We are just wanting to suggest people try some of the newer formulations. They are so skin like and not flat at all but still last 16 or 20 hours. I'm not sure why people get angry at new information

But no one is forcing anyone to do anything

I've yet to find a foundation that lasts like DW and I've tried most of them, they'll last a good 6 hrs but not longer in my experience.

if its any help to you, I went in store today to speak to the consultant and shes given me samples in Wheat. I used to be Fresco in DW but like you it looks cakey and ghosts me. Last week I was given a colour to try - no idea of the name, and whilst I loved the coverage/texture it was a tad too pink for me. I shall try it today. However you are going to love the serum

I also popped into Boots and got samples there. Now I tried the serum in cool ivory yesterday - great colour match, lovely application, but I felt it sitting on me so not sure on it. However I did apply it without cleansing and moisturising - it was getting dark and I wanted to try it before the lights came on so I will try it again

Very generous samples from both stores I might add

suki1964 · 09/02/2024 10:19

I forgot to state it was the futurist serum Ive samples of incase that wasnt quite clear and I also got a sample of the Hydra rescue to try, but today Im going for the serum

flatmop · 09/02/2024 11:07

I like it but I mix it with Boots stay perfect foundation. I still get the coverage but it's not quite as dry. I have oily skin and found that the Boots foundation alone was gone by lunchtime, even with a primer.

kittycloud · 09/02/2024 11:32

I've used Double Wear for about 15 years and I always come back to it. It's a reliable, full coverage foundation that stays put till you take it off. I've used YSL All Hours which was nice, and Elizabeth Arden matte foundation but none are as good as my trusty Estee Lauder Halo I avoid eye area when applying and build up coverage a bit at a time using my fingers. I use a setting spray (currently Benefit) and that's it, lasts for hours :)

kittycloud · 09/02/2024 11:47

Just to add I'm 3N1 ivory beige which is perfect for when I'm tanned or paler. I also own 3N2 wheat which looks lovely. I used their bronzer for ages and that was lovely too - I had the 'medium' shade and it came in a beautiful compact :)

DoodlesMam · 09/02/2024 11:50

For me este lauder doubleware is too heavy for older skin -on me it sits on the lines too badly and it's drying. I would recommend the use of a good tinted moisturiser and just some concealer on any 'troublesome' areas. That way you look 'bloomy' and 'fresh' and avoid the 'ronsealed' air hostess look (and my close cousin is an air hostess so no judging they have to look very made up_).

Now i'm 50 I just use tints or serum foundations and a dab of mac concealer on any blemish; i use creme blush dabbed on and go for a less is more bobby brown style. (in fact her new Jones Road stuff is good).

If you like the really made up look worth looking at chanel foundations - they are really nice colours.

Itsabeautifuldaytosavelives123 · 09/02/2024 18:37

I first used DW 10 years ago, and have come a full circle back to it. The only thing is now I use it to mix other foundations, as none of them have the staying power of DW but DW can be too flat/matt on its own. I find it works well with CT beautiful skin, or any dewy/glowy foundation which is too much shine for my face. The two together work wonders, but I do have to have well prepped, moisturised skin to start with.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 09/02/2024 22:00

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/02/2024 07:16

I'm also Fresco and I'm the same in both.

Me too. I found that DW was too mask like as I aged so am now happy with Hydra Rescue

Viviennemary · 08/03/2024 13:18

I've got the double wear which is good but a bit heavy. I've been using mostly the Estee Lauder perfectionist which is very good and just the right coverage. Just found it has been discontinued. There is another Estee Lauder futurist but £89. Bit pricey to say the least.

Comefromaway · 08/03/2024 13:26

I switched to Hydra Rescue a couple of years ago and it is so much nicer on my skin.

Houseplanter · 08/03/2024 13:29

I'm back with DW.. have worn on and off for years.

I use half a pump with equal measure of serum mixed and it gives just enough coverage.

RedBoxWithABow · 08/03/2024 14:23

I went from Dior Airflash to YSL All Hours to Estee Lauder Double Wear. Then I tried Il Makiage and finally DCYPHER. Of all of these - the best I tried for natural look with buildable coverage (and shade) is DCYPHER. I still use EL DWear concealer, but DCYPHER foundation as well as their drops. As someone else pointed out Double Wear can get cakey (if you go for more coverage) and it can also look a bit like a mask during the day if you're not prepared (don't have time) to work hard at achieving natural look. DCYPHER, for me, does the same range of coverage but with less effort and it does not look cakey/maskey at any point.
