Going blonde to 'hide' grey?

SM4713 · 05/02/2024 18:57

Today, I met with a 3rd friend (all in 40's) who have either had more highlights or changed from brunette to blonde, stating its to 'hide' the grey. Am I the only one that can clearly see the grey and going 'blonde' makes no difference at all? 😕

I bleached my hair when I started to have obvious regrowth when dying it dark brown (ie more than a few grey strands). Personally I prefer the look of dark roots on blonde than grey roots on dark hair - maybe your friends are the same. No need for the sad face 🤷‍♀️

randomusernam · 05/02/2024 19:44

Do you have grey and dark hair? Trust me it is much easier and less obvious when you have more blonde. I'm 35 and have been going grey since I was about 25. I've had to colour my hair every 4 weeks. When I had blonde added I could go 8 and it wasn't as obvious

Sletty · 05/02/2024 19:47

Being able to blend the grey in with the blonde is doable.
Having dark hair, colouring it and battling against the dreaded very noticeable grey regrowth is a nightmare.

Mrsjayy · 05/02/2024 19:52

why the sadface are you sad for your friend or sad you caught a glimpse of grey hair. ? anyway it's easier to .blend in greys on lighter hair than dark yes they might still be seen but as long as a person is happy with their hair surely that's what matters surely?

Anjea · 05/02/2024 19:52

You don't get the noticeable grey halo when you've got blonde hair.

Disturbia81 · 05/02/2024 19:53

They must have really dark hair to all be going grey already

Yeah, I think the blonde highlights can be a bit predictable! And don’t suit everyone.

Having said that I struck a few of my own in at the weekend. Hmmm… not sure. Grey can be lovely and I feel a bit sad. I’ve covered up maybe too much of mine..

in my opinion, it’s finding a forward looking Hairdresser, who knows what to do with it. Something interesting and which personally suits you. Most hairdressers want to do a standard lowlight and highlights in my experience. Perhaps you have to be a Hollywood a queen to get more input? 😢!

Hence my sad little attempts to add a little bit of excitement myself, with mixed results and without the whole standard highlight effect which doesn’t really suit me or my personality.

Perhaps I need to just go into a hairdressers one day and say what do you think.? I don’t want highlights and lowlight, although it suits some people. I want something else. What do you suggest might suit me? Take it from the top ….

I'm 42 and my hair is probably 70% grey in some patches. I started going grey at 17, though it really resulted up in my mid-30s. Naturally very dark brown hair.

My grey is very patchy though, I tried growing it out during lockdown and looked odd. I'm keeping it brunette until it's all gone much more grey. Not a fan of highlights on dark brown hair, and I would look terrible blonde.

FlyingLady · 05/02/2024 20:44

Sorry for the ramble 😳 ! Sometimes I get a bit obsessed with my grey hair and what to do with it.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/02/2024 20:47

They'll look better than I do.

All of the natural red has turned white, the brown has gone dull and what remains is a faded, gingery blonde. If you imagine the corpse of a fieldmouse underneath a layer of snow, slush and council depot grit, you've got roughly the right palette.

I'm going for blonde next time. I don't care about the white being visible, it's this bloody gingery beige that looks shit.

Tanfastic · 05/02/2024 20:50

I've always had blonde highlights in my hair but since I became almost white around my hairline I dye the whole head now a light ash blonde colour. It blends really well when the grey starts to come through. I dye my roots every six weeks or so with a box dye off the shelf. I could never ever go darker now as it would be a nightmare when the white starts poking through,

Winnipeggy · 05/02/2024 21:38

Well yes, grey blends in much better with blonde than dark hair. Surely you can see this?

BeauxHeaux · 05/02/2024 22:01

There's a woman on IG who does grey blending techniques, might be good to give you some ideas - emchenhair

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 05/02/2024 22:02

I've just done this and I look fabulous even though I do say so myself 😂

SM4713 · 05/02/2024 22:04

Its a not a sad face at all, but confusion. I have grey myself, but under no illusion that various colours are hiding it!
@Winnipeggy- the grey is still very obvious though! Whether blonde, brown or red- the grey will be seen as soon as it grows out!

Well yes unless you expect everyone to dye their roots weekly or fortnightly but there is always going to be less contrast between grey and a light colour than grey and a dark colour as numerous posters have pointed out.
I don't think anyone is arguing that you can't see the grey just that the contrast is less stark.

LadyBird1973 · 05/02/2024 22:29

I went gradually blonder as the grey started to come through. I have naturally darl brown hair and being very blonde, didn't really suit me. And it trashed the condition of my hair. I don't have the patience for upkeep tbh. So I'm back to dying it dark. I am fortunate though, in that it takes a few months for the grey to grow through, so I'm not having to do this every couple of weeks.

I don't know if I just had the wrong shade of blonde but I might go back to highlights as the grey increases. Just not overdo it like last time.

It's not such a stark contrast though as you know.

TheChosenTwo · 05/02/2024 22:35

I’m 40 this year and have 3 recurring grey hairs which I just pluck out 😂
My hair grows very quickly and I think it would still look so obvious as my natural hair colour is almost black so even with blond hair (which I feel would look daft with my dark complexion) it would be black roots within a week.
I don’t know what I’ll do but I suspect when they start coming through thick and fast I’ll just let them be. I’m very low maintenance and haven’t had my hair done since last May - I’ll just nave natural silver highlights!
I do think a lot of people that go artificially blonde just feel more secure about disguising their greys, whether anyone else can see them or not, if they feel better about it it really doesn’t matter.

Are you honestly saying that grey is just as obvious on blonde hair as it is on grey? Or are you just being a bit judgey about other peoples choices?

I recently made the change from brown to blonde for exactly this reason. Absolutely you can see the grey as it's a different colour to the blonde. But it does not stand out anywhere like as much as it did as it's much more similar. I previously looked like someone had painted a white stripe down my parting.

Your friends know that you can still see their grey hair, they aren't delusional.

Wherediditgoto · 05/02/2024 22:46

I started going grey quite young. I had blonde highlights for a while once it got so bad that box dyes weren’t an option. I let it go grey in lockdown but now I’m sick of it. I want to get blonde highlights or do something to jazz it up. If there are any hairdressers around please advise me. I don’t want to go back to having to do roots every four weeks, I just want it to be a bit more vibrant. Should I dye it myself?

KeeeeeepDancing · 06/02/2024 02:46

I'm trying a middle way!
No more dying roots, purple toner on mids & ends. Next hair appointment going to do thin highlights but then more toner- aim of smoothing the path to ash to silver.
Wish me luck!
