Leggings - where are your favourites from and what do you wear them with?

Hurray, leggings are socially acceptable / ‘in fashion’ again. I’m sure some people will continue to think they’re stupid ugly, lazy, terrible etc, but as a woman with a very active toddler and on mat leave with a baby, I’m delighted.

My current leggings are getting pretty worn, and I’d like to get some new ones that look good - and ideally make my bum look good too.

What are your favourites? And ideally could you also tell me what you wear them with (and where from)?

FYI, I’m about 5ft, size 14, and have totally lost any sense of ‘personal style’ over the last few years of babies, covid and gaining and then losing about 10kg.

Ouges Brand from Amazon. Amazing

Oldraver · 31/01/2024 21:47

Another vote for Llama Leisure, only sleep ghr gripe is I think they could split the sizing more. 8-14 and 14-20 I think covers to big a range

wfcats · 31/01/2024 21:52

I wear ASOS 4505 black high waisted running leggings for running but also every day life - they're really comfy and flattering, only about 20 quid. And they dry really fast as well which is a blessing with a toddler around, my jeans were just constantly covered in sweet potato and sick and church hall floor dust.

AuraBora · 31/01/2024 21:52

M&S Heat gen thermal ones are great for cold weather. Super comfy and warm, don't sag. I wear them all the time! I wouldn't wear them without a long jumper /top though (or any other leggings). £16.. second winter in..

Also just got some m&s good moves black yoga leggings.. they are tighter but really comfy and for me, suitable for exterior or lounging or whatever

AuraBora · 31/01/2024 21:53

*exercise not exterior!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 31/01/2024 22:18

I don’t wear leggings often other than for exercise, but the one “outside” pair I have is Spanx. I wear them with a chunky knit or oversized sweatshirt on top. Depending on the weather footwear is either DM boots, or thick knit socks and Birkenstock Bostons or Adidas or New Balance chunky trainers.

mirror245 · 31/01/2024 22:22

M&S high waisted and a wide waist band. Super comfy and flattering. Come in various lengths.

I know - it's extortionate, but they are brilliant. And they last forever! I've got multiple pairs and pretty much live in them, they've been washing and worn so many times and even my oldest ones are still going strong.

Those saying Sweaty Betty - which ones? It’s a hell of a price tag!

Sweaty Betty
Born Nouli
Czy Yoga
Adidas
A405

I wear them to the gym and out and about (with a sweatshirt or a slim fitting fleece and a puffer gillet).

I also wear my white sports socks pulled up and big white or cream trainers.

I am not a teen.

Garlicnaan · 31/01/2024 23:07

I have these and they are brilliant. Totally opaque, soft fabric, fairly thick and really suck/hold you in but also somehow really comfy. The 7/8 length is great if you're shorter, they just come up like normal length.

I do think the sizing is on the small side so would be tempted to try both 14 and 16

Namechangerinamanger · 31/01/2024 23:15

Matalan!! Gym leggings are lovely

LunaNorth · 31/01/2024 23:20

I’ve just got some Spanx ones - they’re really thick.

Also a Sweaty Betty fan, and Bamboo ones are lovely and soft, although the inner seam has gone a bit bobbly quite quickly.

Triptastico · 31/01/2024 23:25

@AngryBirdsNoMore re: Sweaty Betty if going to the gym then the Power ones are great and squat proof, they also suck you in and are comfortable however If wearing as everyday leggings out and about/around the house then the All Day leggings are ridiculously soft and comfortable.

They last for years. I've had mine for around 4 years and they still look brand new.

TheChosenTwo · 31/01/2024 23:29

Another one saying sweaty Betty power leggings if I’m going to be out and about or the all day ones for just wfh days - the waist band on the power ones are excellent and compressing as it’s such a wide waistband but if I’m just sitting at my desk for a long stretch they feel too tight!
I don’t like the snazzy colours though, just black and navy ones for me. I have found that the crotch has gone a bit bobbly on all of my black pairs but none of the navy which is baffling.

HangingOnJustAbout · 31/01/2024 23:35

I hadn't realised leggings were back in, what's the current way to wear them other than with the white socks and trainers upthread (def not me!)?

I see plenty wearing them round here but it's all the gathered-round-the-bum type with a cropped top, not a look I'd be going for.

I wear leggings a lot in winter with a crotch length jumper and knee length boots or chunky ankle boots. The boots help balance out the skinny legs imo so I can't figure out how to wear as a more spring/summer look without looking like I taper to a point.

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/01/2024 23:39

I have Spanx leggings. The leather look ones. I also wear m&S heatgen but under dresses to keep me toasty as they’re a bit see through and not really designed to be on show.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 31/01/2024 23:40

Oh god there are now too many choices. Argh.

I just need someone to patronisingly tell me exactly what to wear with links and the buy it. Pathetic I know. I’ve lost all confidence in looking good.

If I may amend my request:

Which of these do you think are best for giving a nice but not pornographic bum, and not enhancing my c section pouch?

These are the best leggings ever:

www.next.co.uk/style/st155528/c74786#c74786

I've got every colour. They make your figure look amazing. They're quite thick and ribbed, not see through & also a bargain.

I just wear them around the house but I think the general gist is to wear them with white socks over the top of them but rolled down with a pair of trainers.

As a veteran 4 c-section mum, the sweaty betty power leggings hold the pouch in nicely, and good on the bum too.

Buddha15 · 01/02/2024 07:52

It all depends on the look you are going for. You can go some the cotton/jersey type with long tunics or the athletic route - Sweaty Betty etc.

Sweaty Betty/Lululemom etc will hold you in more as they have compression. Pair these with trainers and a sweatshirt and you are good to go!

Buddha15 · 01/02/2024 07:58

Look in the Sweaty Betty sale - you will probably need 7/8ths in a large.
M&S also do some nice sports leggings for a good price but I find they aren’t as compressive.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 04/02/2024 15:03

Right so. I tried the several types of Next leggings and they were not at all flattering on me, and the M&S ones are out of stock.

So I am taking the Sweaty Betty plunge…

Is the size guide pretty accurate ie L = 14, XL = 16-18?

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 04/02/2024 16:49

Yes I have found the SB sizing very accurate so just order your regular size.

WhereAreWeNow · 04/02/2024 17:17

@AngryBirdsNoMore they sell Sweaty Betty in John Lewis - depending on where you live, that might be easier for ordering a few and returning what you don't want. I find JL customer service good.

WhereAreWeNow · 04/02/2024 17:19

But I also think SB is very expensive and I'm not convinced that it's any better than the M&S Good Move compression leggings or the Uniqlo airism leggings.
