Leggings - where are your favourites from and what do you wear them with?

Hurray, leggings are socially acceptable / ‘in fashion’ again. I’m sure some people will continue to think they’re stupid ugly, lazy, terrible etc, but as a woman with a very active toddler and on mat leave with a baby, I’m delighted.

My current leggings are getting pretty worn, and I’d like to get some new ones that look good - and ideally make my bum look good too.

What are your favourites? And ideally could you also tell me what you wear them with (and where from)?

FYI, I’m about 5ft, size 14, and have totally lost any sense of ‘personal style’ over the last few years of babies, covid and gaining and then losing about 10kg.

Primark every time! I wear them with long tops or t shirts

piscofrisco · 31/01/2024 20:44

Halara thick waistband leggings. They are great!

Marks and Spencer's high rise leggings. If I don't choose high rise, mine sag unfortunately and these are brilliant.

Another vote for M&S.

Re what to wear them with:
I wear anything that hangs lower than my crotch (camel toe avoidance) but no longer than my knee. Google tunic tops. I've a couple of tops that were advertised as 'dresses' but way too short for dresses for me!

Horsedoglover59 · 31/01/2024 20:50

I wear bright, jazzy leggings from Llama - I love all the different colours and patterns they do, and they have trackie bottoms with pockets, and shorts too. They also have some plain black or navy blue as well. But for ordinary everyday ones I like the Next thicker, high waisted leggings too that are about £18. Very comfy and nice and thick.

AliMonkey · 31/01/2024 20:50

Lands End. Really think, don't go baggy at all at knees or bum; high-waisted; wash well. @OMGitsnotgood describes what I wear them with perfectly - anything between crotch and knee, mostly tunic tops or things advertised as short jersey dresses that in my view are tunics.

Do you all wear something long on top to cover the tummy/bottom area? I'd love to have the confidence to wear them, but I always feel they are just like opaque footless tights! They look so comfortable on so many people, but then there are those I see out and about (not fat shaming honest) who should not wear them ever.

I haven't got fat legs, thighs or bum, but I just haven't got the confidence to wear them, as I said. I am a bit old now, but youngish in clothes sense. No beige, no kilt like skirts, or jumpers and pearls or velcro shoes, you get the drift. Sorry if that is ageist but I'm in my flippin 60s myself!

I love the Uniqlo airism ones - similar quality to sweaty Betty imo but a fraction of the price.

I wear them with long tops/sports type clothes when I’m with the kids at weekends. I dress very smartly at work (suits) so like to really slob out in mh downtime.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 31/01/2024 20:53

I'm a primary school teacher and leggings are my go-to (easy for kneeling down to talk to little ones, hard-wearing, washable, comfy, look good with my Blundstone boots). As a PP also recommended, TU soft touch leggings are the absolute best. £10 a pair and last for ages.

I have very chunky legs, by the way, and don't feel self-conscious in them.

MyopicBunny · 31/01/2024 20:53

I'm autistic and wear them all the time. I like Boden ones, Next ones and Fat Face.

ASwimADay · 31/01/2024 19:16

I see lots of people wearing leggings with chunky trainers and white socks pulled up to the ankle. Wish I could carry this off but my chunky calves just make me look like a footballer unfortunately.

Isn't this a teen thing or has it migrated beyond that?

TokyoSushi · 31/01/2024 20:55

I'm normally not a fan at all of PLT, but these are amazing! www.prettylittlething.com/black-structured-contour-ribbed-leggings.html

ASwimADay · 31/01/2024 20:56

@MyopicBunny I'm seeing women in their 30's definitely!!!

Being a chubster I wear tops past my bum, yes. Long poncho-style sweaters are my favourite with a long sleeved tee underneath. Much more flattering than jeans on me, for example.

APurpleSquirrel · 31/01/2024 20:56

I wear them as a warmer alternative to tights with above knee dresses or tunics.
Also have some for running - but they're different types with pockets.

So interesting how everything evolves.

It's definitely a teen thing. Personally, I think it looks ridiculous but some of the kids like it.

Dearover · 31/01/2024 21:05

Today I wore patterned leggings from Seasalt with a mid thigh length plain coloured linen tunic top and Blundstone boots. I teach at the opposite end of the age spectrum to you @ThreeImaginaryBoys, but still do a lot of kneeling down to talk to my post-grad students.

MKeegs · 31/01/2024 21:07

I'm in my 40's and leggings, sport socks, trainers and a hoody / sweatshirt is my casual wear
Clothes and looks are not just for teens!

PumpkinSly · 31/01/2024 21:09

I really dislike the white socks with black leggings and clumpy trainers look. It's really popular with mums where I live. It makes me cringe.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 31/01/2024 21:18

@Dearover Leggings are clearly teacher chic! Not to mention the Blundstones :)

WithIcePlease · 31/01/2024 21:18

I have various lovely walking leggings from tkmaxx. More substantial than ordinary leggings and have side pockets.

Dearover · 31/01/2024 21:25

@ThreeImaginaryBoys I have the green sides. And yours?

KarateSchnitzel · 31/01/2024 21:26

I love my confident curves leggings from very. So comfy. I struggle to pair them with the right top though. I have a good figure (even if I do say so myself) and the leggings are definitely not see through. Whats everyones opinion on leggings and t-shirt that doesn't cover your bum?
I remember someone saying to me years ago that leggings are not a substitute for trousers but if they're not see through then why the hell not??

EasterIssland · 31/01/2024 21:37

Sweaty Betty for days out or lululemon

for work I should get some but I want them to be jeans style. I had some from sea salt and they were crap. Broke on the first day
