Lip blushing: share your tips

I've booked to have this done in March, in my 50s and lips are looking thin and blurry. Would love to hear from others who've done it.

How did you choose the colour?

Did you stay within your natural lip line?

Any advice for the healing stage?

Thank you!

You have to stay in your natural lip line.

Had mine done a year or so ago. Picked colour with advice from beautician.

It was the worst pain ever. Was supposed to go back for top-up but couldn't face it. My lips peeled awfully after. Immediately after they swell and my husband thought I'd had filler.

A year in and the colour isn't visible really, probably doesn't help I haven't had the top-up but nothing would make me go back.

I don't think it's worth it.

They will give you all the after-care info as well.

I had a horrendous experience with this as well. I chose a nude pink colour. The lady went over so many times I swear there was no anaesthetic cream left she went so deep in the skin. Excruciating. It was red, red as well for weeks. Possibly because she’s gone over it so many times. I couldn’t bear the outside air on my lips, they were about 5 times the size and I got an infection and cold sores all over them. Ever since then I’ve had a lot of cold sores. Never had the top up. That was probably 7 years ago now. I still have the colour but I wouldn’t do it if I had the time over.

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 28/01/2024 20:33

I've had lip blush. It didn't take well so had to have three top ups. I found it mildly uncomfortable but not painful.
There was a lot of swelling but that only lasted a few hours.
Despite four sessions my lips are still patchy so I still wear lipstick. Because of that I wouldn't bother again.
I've also had my eyebrows done and I really love them, a complete game changer.

return2sender · 28/01/2024 20:37

I've also had eyeliner and eyebrows - that was absolutely fine and I love it.

I was hoping for better news when I saw this thread. I would like a solution to my thinning and pale lips that doesnt involve filler and lipstick (which I cant really apply any more because of my hands)

almondflake · 28/01/2024 21:02

I had lip blush , I had good results but came out in huge cold sores on to and bottom lips , I was told afterwards that I should have taken oral acicleovr for 7days before hand . I liked the results but i don't think I would bother again .

Tex111 · 28/01/2024 21:05

Wow! Thanks your responses. I might need to rethink this.

Try this

www.refinery29.com/en-gb/tiktok-fake-tan-lip-liner-hack

It's cheap and you can't go wrong if you apply it properly. If you don't like it then it's gone writhing a couple of days.

Elevenutionary · 28/01/2024 21:44

I’ve had it. Chose the colour with assistance from the therapist. It’s a light pink. It wasn’t painful, a bit uncomfortable. All healed in 3 days. I like it - I was completely colourless without it and now I have lips again.

That is quite interesting. At my age though the line of my lips seems quite blurry, not sure where it is anymore and they also seem different on different sides. Knowing my luck I would end up with wonky lips!

PaulCostinRIP · 28/01/2024 22:23

@soupfiend

Use an angled brush like this -

https://www.beautybay.com/p/nanshy/angled-detailer-brush/onyx-black/?awc=15526170648043228dc4c9bc91c7d374e3d271a6428a522b&utmsource=aw&utmmmedium=affiliate&utm_campaign=Skimlinks

You can't really go wrong as you can practice as much as you like and remove it instantly if you go wrong.

I would practice with the brush and a wet eyeshadow.

Mycatsbigtoe · 28/01/2024 22:30

I’ve had it several times. Both times have been absolutely fine. Your lips are numbed and you shouldn’t feel anything really. The only time it nipped was getting the outline done.

The first time, I got a numbing gel applied. The second, which was very recently, I got kind of like a numbing lip mask put on my lips. It does take time for the feeling to come back, but personally it didn’t bother me.

Straight after, your lips are very dark and as time goes on, they will start to feel very dry and peel. I just kept constantly applying the lip salve I got given after. Or any moisturising lip salve should do. After about 6-8 weeks, I went back for a top up.

I got a brighter blush and am delighted with the end result. No regrets at all.

Going by what people are saying here, annual filler sounds miles better!

soupfiend · 28/01/2024 22:35

Makes you wonder then why they dont do a product like self tan but in red/pink/browns for 'tanning' the whole lip for days on end. Same product, just different colours?

PadamityJane · 28/01/2024 22:41

Semi permanent eyebrows saved my face from looking washed out and ill. I have wondered about the lips but I guess I am nervous about pain

I guess it's because lips are not regular skin.

Ooooooooy · 29/01/2024 00:45

so I went down a rabbit hole of researching this when only OP had posted and was about to book it… the rest of the replies on this thread have me rethinking that!

It seems to cost between £150-400 (might be dependant on having 1 vs 2 sessions). I have had lip filler a few times and think the natural pigment of my lips could be improved. My filler has also pretty much faded so might need to get a top up first, and lip blush later. I have seen photos of healed lip blush online which looks alright but some results do look a bit patchy

pooroldgirl · 29/01/2024 07:52

I‘m a cosmetic tattooist - so do lip blush.

It is uncomfortable but most artists will use numbing so it shouldn’t be awful. The only time I’ve had a lady find it too bad to continue she was due on - I do think hormones make a big difference in terms of sensitivity/pain threshold!

You really do need 2 appointments to get a lasting colour out of it - the initial and then a ‘perfecting’ to touch up any areas that didn’t heal so well.

If you are a cold sore sufferer it can trigger them so need to prep for about 5 days in advance.

I get very little swelling but am soft handed so consider this when choosing an artist - ask about their swelling/scabbing and healed results as it really can vary depending on the technique of the person you use.

I will say though generally it is more subtle than people expect. So consider going a little darker/brighter than you want initially as it’ll fade by about 40% during the healing.

I do turn clients away if I don’t think they can tolerate the tattoo process even with numbing.

It’s better than filler for definition, pale/pigment loss, patchiness etc. but won’t make them fuller per se.

90yomakeuproom · 29/01/2024 07:56

I've had lip blush. I chose a coral pink type colour. It was slightly painful in some parts but worth it. I stayed within the lip line (think you have to really) and 2 years later the colour is still there. Slightly faded. I love it.

Would you have any tips/ things to look out for (good and bad) for brows?
I’ve had full lips forever and was bullied mercilessly and relentlessly til I was 18 for them.. 30 now.
but my brows have always been patchy and thin, but I’m wary of ending up looking “sharpie brow” forever!

PadamityJane · 29/01/2024 11:51

They show you the sketched out brow before they start so it’s not going to be Groucho Marx unless you want that.
You can ask for hair strokes which look a bit like natural hairs rather than powder brows which is more solid colour less natural looking.

frantic17 · 29/01/2024 23:01

I had lip blush about 3 months ago and really like it. I didn't have any pain (numbing cream was applied liberally beforehand and left for around 20 minutes to take) and no swelling. My lips went very dry after a couple of days which was expected and then peeled. I had a top up appointment after 8 weeks and now fully healed it is quite subtle but I'm really happy as I literally had no colour to my lips before. I paid £180 in Birmingham area.

Ewoklady · 29/01/2024 23:04

I had it done 2 or 3 years ago and it’s made a huge difference
I love it

I had very thin lips that now have definition. They did swell and were red (I wore a mask as we were at the COVID end stage) so no one saw. But they healed well. Also had eyeliner and brows done

CatWithNoTeeth · 29/01/2024 23:41

I had it but it faded very quickly. I don't know if that was just me or if the girl didn't do it properly. I have very pale lips and look washed out alot, so I do wish it had worked. If they numb you up properly then it shouldn't feel so bad.

As an alternative I really recommend Wonderskin lip masques, the ones that go on blue but wipe off as a really long lasting lip stain. I get one that just makes my lips a bit more pink but in a really nice natural way. It is great!
