Clinique take the day off cleansing balm and dramatically different moisturiser

I know these two items have a lot of good things said about them and I agree as I have tried samples but both are so expensive. I mean £35 for a cleanser?

Is it really worth buying the full sizes or are cheaper alternatives as good?

I think JL have the large (jumbo) size DDML in at the moment ( saw them on the Clinique counter at the weekend) and I personally think it is worth it. I like the cleansing balm too but I don’t go out of my way to purchase it. If you live near a Cosme tic Company outlet ( Estée Lauder) brands then you might be able to get them reduced. I picked up 3 normal size DDML in a pack and with an additional discount got the pack for somewhere along the lines of £50.

I’m not bothered about the cleanser but I’ve used the moisturiser for years and think it’s really good and worth it

AceofPentacles · 25/01/2024 20:05

The moisturiser is definitely worth the price

I love both these and won't compromise on the DDM but I do like the camomile cleansing balm from the body shop for a third of the price and does just as good a job.

I remember years ago a scientist saying the difference between a £2 moisturiser and a £200 one was £198..

Pigeonqueen · 25/01/2024 20:14

I used to work for Clinique so have tried loads of stuff (as we used to get 65% discount across all the Estée Lauder brands) and I actually have to say I prefer the Body Shop Chamomile cleansing balm (£12) more than anything else I’ve ever tried. My absolute fave.

Pigeonqueen · 25/01/2024 20:14

(Body shop is obviously not part of EL).

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 25/01/2024 20:30

No cleanser is worth spending on. Realistically, it's on your face for how long? No matter what in it, a good one just does the job of taking your makeup and daily muck off.
I loved the TTDO when I had one as a present, but I'm not spending that on something that goes down the plug after 30 seconds.
I'm using the DDM as a day cream at the mo' as my skin is a bit dry and irritated and it is very nice. I probably wouldn't have paid for it, it was in a sample kit but it's good.
Looking at the ingredients though, there's nothing in particular in there that isn't in much cheaper creams.

OrangeBlossom28 · 25/01/2024 20:32

Cleansers aren't worth splurging on so I'd look for an alternative balm cleaner if that's what you're after.
I used to use DDM a long time ago and it's not worth it either. Curél and CeraVe are both great brands for a decent reasonably priced moisturiser.

How good is the Body Shop balm at shifting mascara? Would it get waterproof off?

Violet80 · 25/01/2024 20:36

@Pigeonqueen sorry pressed post too soon, was going to say I ask about the Body Shop one because I bought a huge pot of the Clinique balm and wasn't that impressed, felt I had to use it all up though because I spent so much on it!

I have to admit I don’t wear waterproof so I’m not sure but one of the main reasons I like it is because it’s the best I’ve found at dissolving mascara and eye make up, so worth a go. I think they sell little travel pots at £6 so you could get one of those and try it.

noodlezoodle · 25/01/2024 20:41

Another vote for the Body Shop Camomile balm - the oil is good too. I wear tubing mascara so not sure how good it is at getting waterproof mascara off, but it certainly shifts everything else.

I think the moisturiser is completely unremarkable and not particularly worth it.

Noicant · 25/01/2024 20:43

I don’t rate either tbh. I like skin food black sugar oil cleaner and face wash, literally takes every last bit of mascara, sunscreen etc off, I use white towels and theres no residue when I dry my face. Tub of eucerin rough skin makes a good moisturiser with urea and glycolic acid.

SausageAndEggSandwich · 25/01/2024 20:43

I buy the small TTDO as it's a really handy size for holidays and overnight work trips. It is expensive but it's not my everyday cleanser so I don't really mind and it does last as you don't need to use much.

WellThisIsFun1 · 25/01/2024 20:45

The cleanser lasts for ages (I mean months and months) and is excellent.

I've always found the moisturiser very average but that's probably just my skin

PickAChew · 25/01/2024 20:46

The moisturiser is expensive but goes a long way. You need the tiniest dab of it.

Lostatsea10 · 25/01/2024 20:49

Is it comparable to Elemis cleansing balm? I used to use the DDM moisturiser and then stopped because of cost. 12 years later that’s not such an issue and I’m hooked on pro-marine cream but always happy to try something else if it’s worth it.

pussinboots61 · 25/01/2024 21:28

Thank you for your replies. It does seem a lot to spend on cleanser. I tend to use Liz Earle cleanse and polish, that's not quite as expensive and I often get it bought for me for presents.

I tend to spend more money on foundation and lipstick so try to go cheaper on skin care if I can. I do like salon hair products though.

What are your views about what to spend on and what to economise on?

I found the moisturiser thin and not long lasting even back when I tried it in my 30s. Is I’m in my late 40s I’m using Nivea Soft. It’s cheap, rich, easily absorbed and doesn’t interfere with my makeup when I wear it. I just wish it smelt as nice as some of the Clinique products

Spend on serum.

Sometimes foundation though one of my holy grails is Boots Hydraluminous.

The key is to look for ingredients not products or brand names.

Moisturizers are full of glycerine, hyaluronic acid etc. Great ingredients, cheap as chips one and all.

OrangeBlossom28 · 25/01/2024 21:42

I will spend on foundation and lipstick. I do like L'Oréal True Match which isn't spendy but then have foundations from MAC, NARS, Delilah and Bobbi Brown for weekend. I do really rate NARS and MAC lipsticks.

Funnily enough, I just switched to this and to Body Shop vitamin E day moisturiser from Clinique. The only difference I can tell, is that I’m much happier to slather the much cheaper moisturiser on my neck!
