Over 45s, what are your holy grail skincare products?

What products do you buy over and over again that make the biggest difference to your skin?

Im on a mission to revamp my skincare routine now I've hit my mid 40s. My skin is dry and dehydrated with some hyper-pigmentation. There's so much choice it's a bit overwhelming!

Only prescription Tretinoin, Nivea or Olay moisturiser, and an ordinary sunscreen like Neutrogena. Nothing else. Total bill £15 a year maybe?

TheOGCCL · 23/01/2024 13:26

Prescription tretinoin and SPF

HateMyRubbishBoss · 23/01/2024 13:28

Not creams as such but I 100000% swear by these

  • dr pen
  • facial flex .. with this one my jowls are gone ( 48yo)

That sounds reasonable. Where is your Tretinoin from?

Bornonsunday · 23/01/2024 13:30

Thanks @HateMyRubbishBoss I can see the jowls coming in so I'll check that out! Love the username!

I get my Tret from overseas very cheap @sunward but I believe it is available on Skin and Me and Dermatica in the Uk.

I could do with something for my jowls, but I am not keen on surgical interventions, and probably too lazy for face yoga.

Bornonsunday · 23/01/2024 13:31

I tried prescription tret and it made my face sting and go slighter darker, so I've gone back onto the over the counter stuff. Maybe I should have stuck it out for longer?

Sususudio · 23/01/2024 13:33

Tret definitely takes time, and there is an initial purging period when your face may peel or sting. I began in the lockdown when we were all masked anyway! And best to use very little and buffer with moisturiser. I only use it twice a week. No effect on jowls, sadly.

Bornonsunday · 23/01/2024 13:38

Thanks, may have to bite the bullet and try again! Is buffering where you use moisturiser first?

OP posts:
Sususudio · 23/01/2024 13:40

Yes, you can use it both before and after the tret if you want to. I have quite thick skin that used to be very oily though.

Stoufer · 23/01/2024 13:44

I love dr organic rose Otto facial serum (I buy from Holland and Barrett) - it leaves skin feeling very soft..

Liveandforget · 23/01/2024 13:49

Cerave moisturizing lotion for me, and generally cerave products. cleanser and serum

also La roche posay Anthelios anti-ageing

PaminaMozart · 23/01/2024 13:53

There are so many serums available and I'm not convinced that their effects vary a great deal. Sunscreen and moisturising are equally if not more important.

A healthy diet - lots of vegetables and lean protein - is just as important as skincare. Plus regular exercise and keeping to a healthy weight.

As well as leading an active, stimulating and emotionally balanced life. Nothing ages more than being unhappy. And yes, this last bit can be challenging at times...

Boots Essentials Eye Makeup Remover £1:50, bargain
Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish
L’Occitane hand cream
These are the things I never run out of. Moisturisers I tend to buy whatever Olay is on offer. Used to religiously use Clarins but found no difference when I swapped to cheaper brands except the packaging & perfume

TeaMistress · 23/01/2024 14:08

Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing balm (the yellow one)
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream
Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Cream
Charlotte Tilbury Collagen facial oil

You can tell that I really love Charlotte Tilbury skincare

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 23/01/2024 14:11

A vitamin C (currently using Sali Hughes)

A retinoid (moved up through retinols to Tret but have now come down to Retinal which I've decided is my happy point and I'll stick with that)

SPF 50

Various cleansers. Various moisturizers. Various hydrating serums.

Bornonsunday · 23/01/2024 14:14

I think a vitamin c serum has been fading my hyperpigmentation. Interesting you also doing tree too much for you @BlindurErBóklausMaður can I ask why and which retinal you are using?

OP posts:
Bornonsunday · 23/01/2024 14:16

"Doing tree?!" That was meant to say you also found tree too much for you@BlindurErBóklausMaður

Neal's Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm
Neal's Yard Rehydrating Rose Facial Oil
Trilogy Rosehip Oil

All great in the dry Winter months

sunward · 23/01/2024 16:24

Thanks @Sususudio

LoreleiG · 23/01/2024 16:28

La Roche Posay sunscreen or Soltan facial sunscreen if I am feeling poor (only from about mid March)
Nivea Soft
A serum - HC or Vit C or both
La Roche Posay eye cream
Occitaine hand cream
Caudalie oil make up remover
Simple eye make up remover.

At the moment.

DiamondGazette · 23/01/2024 16:28

I use coconut oil to remove make up and also a couple of drops before putting on Lacura day cream/Lacura night cream. Coconut oil seems to help my eyebrows and eyelashes grow too.

RunnyPaint · 23/01/2024 16:47

I like the Inkey List vitamin c serum, the hyaluronic acid from B&M (they also have good cheap handcream) and Blistex medicated lip remedy (the one that looks like small tube of superglue). Otherwise, I swap between different moisturisers and facial sunscreens as the deals change in the supermarkets, and I use coconut oil as a cleanser.

Worldgonecrazy · 23/01/2024 16:50

Oleo - it’s a small brand that make wonderful face creams. The Frankincense one is my favourite. I switched from Neals Yard and saved a few pounds.
