I really like the look of The Shortlist but I haven't bought anything yet so can't comment beyond that! I quite like Reiss petite range. I'm currently waiting on a couple of Whistles petite dresses. I feel your pain! Us petite folk are completely overlooked (pun actually not intended 😅)

Heartbrokenxxx · 22/01/2024 16:47

LK Bennett?

Trahlalalala · 22/01/2024 16:49

I feel your pain - I'm petite on top and have resorted to getting the local seamstress/alterations lady to alter regular size tops and dresses to fit, even t-shirts.

gawditswindy · 22/01/2024 16:49

Some Mint Velvet trousers and jeans are available in petite length.

NotMeNoNo · 22/01/2024 16:51

How much extra would you pay for petite clothes? £200 will buy you a sewing machine and a few lessons in basic alterations. Just think of it as having items "tailored to fit".

I know that's not what you asked, and not everything can be altered, but I use my sewing machine to shorten every single sodding pair of trousers or dress I buy and I've started shortening sleeves too. Jumpers and jackets are my nemesis.

Various petite ranges have disappeared or restricted in sizes and style and there is so little choice. Having said that - Hobbs, Next, M&S, Boden all do petite, as do Whistles and Reiss, and obviously jeans like Levi's come in a range of lengths.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/01/2024 16:52

Not really! Especially since the demise of Debenhams ...
Fortunately I don't need many smart clothes so I can mostly manage with Next, M&S and Lands End.

Girlattheback · 22/01/2024 17:06

Reiss do some lovely petite clothes. Nobody’s Child, Boden & Hobbs have good petite ranges. For jeans Levi’s come in short leg lengths, I’ve just bought their Ribcage jeans and they’re great.

SaborDeSoledad · 22/01/2024 17:09

@Girlattheback Those Ribcage jeans are amazing!

countingto10 · 22/01/2024 17:24

Karen Millen do a petite range with a varied price range. Some of the top end stuff looks good.

KirstenBlest · 22/01/2024 19:02

How tall are you?

RovenderKitt · 22/01/2024 19:05

I invariably end up in Hobbs. Marks and Spencer do some trousers in Extra Short length they even fit DD who’s about 4’10”

I think this is unrealistic. It takes lots of practice and experience to be able to do anything except a visible hem on a straight leg trouser.
Tapered trousers or ones with turn-ups, shaped hems, pleats, particularly stretchy or fine material, anything involving 3 dimensions (eg: adding or taking in darts), sleeves trimmed with buttons (to name but a few) are very difficult to take up or in to a professional standard.
And most normal sewing machines will break if you try to hem dem in, so don't do that unless yours is industrial strength.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 22/01/2024 19:56

I'm 5ft 2 and there's usually a fair selection on Uniqlo that fit. They give individual measurements online for every item, which is really helpful.

For more upmarket stuff, Parisian brands such as Maje, Sandro and Iro can be good (available reduced on The Outnet). Joseph has just introduced shorter lengths for some products.

@Anothernewname123 I appreciate there is a skill to alterations but I don't think it's as hard as you make out. I'm literally wearing one of many pairs of denim jeans I have taken up on my domestic machine.

Mind it would involve ironing which is strictly banned on MN so maybe not...

I've been sewing for approx 25 years.
I'll make cushions and curtains but wouldn't risk anything but a simple hem on my clothes.

CheesecakeandCrackers · 22/01/2024 21:57

Interested too. I'm 5ft and even petite sometimes swamp me. I used to live in Next & DP and now in M&S but would like to branch out.

Icantbedoingwithit · 22/01/2024 21:59

I am very very short and find it near impossible to find decent pieces.

LuciferRising · 22/01/2024 22:01

Just shy of 5 foot and petite things often too big. I love Religion and All Saints but can't find anything of a similar style that would fit me.

Instead have to make do with scrapes from Next, Boden etc and I never like the styles.

Floopyfloop · 22/01/2024 22:02

I’m 5ft. Précis petite are really good.
I get my jeans from new look as they do short length and I always get joggers and leggings in Bon marche as they have 5 lengths to choose from. Their yoga leggings are amazing. Tops I tend to get from Oliver bonas.

I didn’t know New Look did short length! Thank you!

I've had some lovely things from the Eileen Fisher petite range. Very good for slouchy jumpers and extremely fine Irish linen skirts and summer trousers. They are very pricy but I've found the odd bargain on eBay. Years ago I would find stuff on eBay.com but the exchange rate and postage is so bad nowadays.

I think the bigger problem for me isn't so much the lengths - they're easy to get around. But just the fit everywhere else. Especially the shoulders.
I love Arket and Other Stories, but their stuff is enormous on me everywhere! It's so annoying

Oblomov23 · 23/01/2024 08:39

Glad I found this thread, I need some new clothes and can't find anything atm.

This! This is the worst thing about being ‘petite’ it’s not just a case of take the hems up. I can do that easily.

The whole fit of clothes is wrong in average sizes. The waist bands/tapering and bust darts sit too low because we have shorter torso length, the shoulders are too wide, leg shaping on trousers often starts in the wrong place, taking up a boot cut or flare throws the lower leg shaping proportions off.

I used to just actually buy children’s clothes when I was an extremely slim athletic build but now I’ve filled out more and have a bum, hips and boobs the cut of children’s clothes is worse than just buying normal adult clothes and putting up with poor positioning of the tailoring.

Will be following this thread for good recommendations.

Howmanyroses · 23/01/2024 09:30

I am petite and looking at my wardrobe, it's pretty much just Cos, Arket (I have to go for X small for these 2), Massimo Dutti, Poetry and Jaeger. Wrap London is good for petites as well
