Hong Kong is a petite person's paradise.

NotMeNoNo · 23/01/2024 11:01

It's also the case that clothes tend to get longer as well as wider as they go up sizes. Things that would have been ok in the size 12 are far too long in 16/18.

LuciferRising · 23/01/2024 11:18

Hong Kong - I remember needing to buy additional underwear while on holiday. And the shop assistant stood over me and pointed out I was looking at the medium briefs. I knew there was a veiled suggestion I need to look at other sizes. When I held them up I realised I need far far larger. Generally a size 8 here.

Oh, come back Debenhams. I’m just 5’ & I used to buy mostly from there, Anne Brookes Petit, Minuet, Principles Petit, so many other brands you could usually find something you liked that fitted, especially when they still used good fabric instead of the constant polyester.
You’re so right about the fit. An invisible hem is easy to do with hand stitching, far better than on a machine, but the shoulders never fit nor the waist or any shaping.

I'm 5ft 2 and there's usually a fair selection on Uniqlo that fit. They give individual measurements online for every item, which is really helpful.

For more upmarket stuff, Parisian brands such as Maje, Sandro and Iro can be good (available reduced on The Outnet). Joseph has just introduced shorter lengths for some products.

Uniqlo is a Japanese brand, and I think quite a lot of their regular ranges "sit" well on petite bodies.

KirstenBlest · 23/01/2024 11:38

I think that if you are 5'2" Uniqlo and Muji might be OK, as well as some petite ranges. Shorter than 5' might find the proprtions too long.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 23/01/2024 11:41

I also find the reviews on the Uniqlo website useful. They're international, but with a Google translate button. Because there are usually a lot of reviews per product, and they often given weight and height, it's relatively easy to work out how things will fit me.

Yes, it was good having it all under one roof, plus the franchises of Next and Wallis. I've still got a couple of Anne Brookes cardis in regular summer use.

I lived in the US for a couple of years around 1990, that was good too... yes, I've still got a few items from that era.

Comefromaway · 23/01/2024 12:28

Debenhams used to be fantastic for petite people.

For me it's not only length (my mum can take up hems for me) but it's the shoulders (blouses that don't gape are too big on the shoulders) and where the waistline sits.

Marks & Spencers for trousers are quite good for me. Also some Mango clothes.

I used to like Rocha John Rocher, Planet, Manteray etc etc

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2024 12:47

I've loads of Mantaray tops, the sort with rollback sleeves so the length is ok. I stocked up when Debenhams looked like it was going under. Does anywhere else stock them? (Debenhams going down must have had a massive impact on that sort of brandSad)

Comefromaway · 23/01/2024 13:09

Mantaray is a Debenhams own brand. It still exists on the website but now comes under the Boohoo umberella I think.

Darklane · 23/01/2024 13:55

I’ve still got a lot from back then, Anne Brookes cardigans & V neck jumpers, jeans. Mantaray jackets & jeans. Even still got my mum of the groom Minuet suit & he’s been married twenty years!
You get loathe to throw things out when they’re classic styles, fit, still in great condition & nicer than much that’s in the shops. I’ve still got silk shirts & would you believe knitted pure silk twin sets ( short sleeved V neck top & matching long sleeved cardigan, very fine knitted silk) from M&S of all places back when they still sold lots of natural fabrics in the nineties.

Lorac23 · 23/01/2024 13:57

If you're happy with Preloved, then try vinted or eBay for précis petite, debut, kaliko, principles petite. I'm very short and busty and I really miss Debenhams

Notcontent · 23/01/2024 16:52

It’s difficult!

The difficulty with petite ranges is that they are usually very limited and only available online. And sometimes the “short” versions are still quite long.

I have recently bought a dress, blazer and coat from the new whistles petite range. I am happy with those purchases although some of their petite range has been weirdly oversized.

I am pretty much always on the lookout for things that may fit me. e.g I have bought some Baukjen skirts on Vinted (from a few years back) that fit me perfectly - but their new skirts are super long.

recently I wanted to buy a midi leather skirt - I couldn’t find anything suitable! I did consider buying a long one and having it taken up but decided it would be too risky.

Is it available in Roman stores, or only online?

Ambertonix · 23/01/2024 17:48

@myrtleberry Im not sure about in store, i have only bought them online so i could try them on in the comfort of my own home. Im quite self concious!

SpiritOfEdna · 23/01/2024 18:11

Just bought a denim jumpsuit from Whistles petit range - still too long but by a couple of inches (rather than 7) but the waist is in the right place, sleeves are the right length and I am just shy of 5 ft.

Following with interest.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2024 18:16

I don't like buying clothes online except from lands end tops - CBA with having to return stuff that doesn't fit well.
