It's so bloody sexist. Just size them in the same ways as the men's in inches.
I have to order 3 pairs to get the correct length. Then they shrink in the wash...

Completely agree with this!

NothingTraLaLa · 20/01/2024 20:41

Great news! I’d stopped buying trousers from M&S as the short are too long and the extra short are always out of stock.

bobomomo · 20/01/2024 20:51

I find their skirts (except maxi ones) too short, they never seem to allow for bigger waist sizes to have more length (to allow for our more ample proportions Grin)

Haven't bought jeans recently but I'm usually a standard length which 5'6 seems about right

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 20/01/2024 21:11

YireosDodeAver · 20/01/2024 20:35

Brilliant news - I was really annoyed when their "Short" trousers suddenly became the length that used to be standard and they stopped doing trousers short enough for me. I've been having to fork out for a tailor to shorten them every time.

It is a ten minute job with needle and thread to shorten trousers. It is impossible to lengthen them.

Congratulations

I am now doomed to flappy trousers.

Allchangename354 · 20/01/2024 21:23

They needed to add a long range so that @JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon could get her size rather than changing the existing short/regular etc.

However not everyone finds sewing easy or go to the bother of buying something knowing they have to shorten it. I expect M&S have discovered this hence the change.

Crabbers · 20/01/2024 21:30

I can't fathom why M&S have made this decision. It sounds like theyve bowed to shorter shoppers, this discrimination against those of us who are tall. It's going back 30+ years!! Shorter legs can be turned up. What do they expect us to do with 35-37" inside legs?! Stick fabric on?! The population has got taller.
Work trousers are vital. We need to petition M&S to keep certain lines available for longer inside legs. Sounds like some other companies are also considering this too. What a total nightmare for tallies :(

greengreengrass25 · 20/01/2024 21:58

Kaykay247 · 20/01/2024 20:28

For all you ladies complaining about these trousers being too long, I have a 37 inch inside leg and the last change meant that I could actually buy m&s trousers for the first time in my life. Now both m&s and next have ceased doing extra long trousers. So even though all you shorties can take your trousers up, and I can't add to mine, now I can't buy trousers in any but ONE store now unless I get them made. So think yourselves lucky!!

Yes we can but it's a pain

They could make extra long and leave the others as they were

Kalevala · 20/01/2024 22:03

Allchangename354 · 20/01/2024 20:24

My bugbear is pjs. My legs do not grow at night! I can’t sew and have no one they can take something up for me. Next have a few petite styles but no where else I have found. There is a Sizing guide on the website 27” that used to be small is now xsmall.

I need longer at night as my legs are bent so bottoms come up my ankle compared to if I am standing.

RandomMess · 20/01/2024 22:03

It sounds like they just need to have the extra short stocked in stores AND do some extra long lengths too.

As a very short shortie I cannot buy anything in any store without ordering in. Next petite is nearly all black work wear 🙄

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/01/2024 22:03

The population as a whole might be getting taller, but that’s mainly younger woman, the average middle aged woman is still 5’3”, so add a longer length if there’s a market for it, but removing the short leg option clearly was a poor choice for the bulk of their customers.

(and yes, trousers can be shortened, but that’s a faff and if they aren’t straight leg, then you’ll lose some of the style)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/01/2024 22:06

I’m past middle age and 5ft 8 though..

Kaykay247 · 20/01/2024 22:10

greengreengrass25
Of course they COULD, but they haven't. They've just changed the length of each category. So tall people lose out. Again. I haven't been able to shop on the high street for over a decade. Tall people just aren't catered for at all. And now we have 2 less options. Thanks for your complete lack of sympathy

RosesAndHellebores · 20/01/2024 22:13

I think it's a hideous announcement. Do M&S think all women in the UK are 5'4" or less? They are not.

I am 63 and 5' 6.5". I am not in the least very tall and neither do I have exceptionally long legs but I do need an M&S long in trousers. They are already as rare as hens' teeth and rarely in stock in the stores

It is frustrating and on a par with the fact that 30 years ago there was an assumption that no pregnant woman could be taller than 5'4".

Trousers can be taken up; they cannot be let down.

Kalevala · 20/01/2024 22:20

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/01/2024 22:06

I’m past middle age and 5ft 8 though..

My 90 year old grandmother is too, or was, but her legs haven't got shorter.

YireosDodeAver · 20/01/2024 22:32

Why do they need to limit their length options to only serve tall women or short women not both?? Surely both women with 25" legs and those with 35" legs are equally deserving of trousers.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 20/01/2024 22:32

My granny at 5'8" was the smallest in her family of 10+ sisters thanks to childhood illness. Most of my great Aunts were 5'11" and most never wore trousers as they couldn't buy them long enough. The one who moved to London would buy trousers at Long Tall Sally and was always the envy of the others.

Kaykay247 · 21/01/2024 07:38

Allchangename354 · 20/01/2024 19:41

I used to be short, now extra short which are not in store and I have to order online. It’s a pain.

Try being tall. Shopping is online only - not a single shop stocks tall clothes!!

Sofabum · 21/01/2024 07:43

It's the consistency they need to work on. I have two size 10 jumpers . One is baggy, the other I couldn't get my head through the head hole and once I'd struggled through the arms were 4" too short and it was far too tight across the shoulders. I wonder if someone had accidentally added a 10 year olds jumper but it says it's the same range as the first.

My bugbear is the same in reverse! All PJs are too short for me apart from Next tall range. Why have shops realised they need to sell different length trousers but they still sell pj's in one standard length?

WhereAreWeNow · 21/01/2024 07:54

I wonder if we could change their mind if we all petitioned M&S.
I've really enjoyed being able to get jeans and trousers that are long enough.
The other place I used to get long trousers was Gap but they've reduced their tall range massively.
Asos has a tall range but the styles are all too young for me and the quality is crap.
Zara used to do 36" trousers but not sure if they do anymore.

I'm half an inch shorter than you - but need the 27" length.

Extra short are always out of stock anyway.

RosesAndHellebores · 21/01/2024 09:09

@NeverDropYourMooncup I'll measure my inside leg later. I don't think I'm particularly leggy but the standard, which I think is 29, is too short. Certainly in tailored versions in the winter. The long, with a 1.5" heel is perfect. The regular/standard, whatever the heel is just too short.

I also need a long in "ankle grazers" because otherwise they look "half mast" and don't by any means graze my ankles.

Helenloveschat · 21/01/2024 09:24

@NeverDropYourMooncup @RosesAndHellebores I'm also 5'6" but a 28" inside leg- so three of us looking pretty normally proportioned I would guess and all requiring different leg lengths. It should be obvious to Marks and Spencer that women need to be able to buy their trousers according to inside leg length, not a nominally named 'short' or 'long' etc. After all, I might prefer my trousers on my 28" legs 5'6" frame to sit slightly higher than you might on your 27" legs 5'6" frame but without the actual trouser inside leg measurement I'll have to faff around trying on several pairs -or measure them myself in store!
So please, Marks and Spencer, just put the inside leg measurement on the garments instead of silly descriptors.
Oh -and for heavens sake- provide a wider range of lengths to cater for those who have 37" + legs or who might like the choice wear their trousers longer than current fashions might dictate.
