Waterproof coat Didriksons / Seasalt / North Face

I'm 48 and usually wear Zara or Cos coats. I'm looking for a waterproof parka, not too frumpy and not necessarily overly warm. I like the Didriksons Luna but it's very expensive although I'm happy to pay as I want it to last.

Just seen the North Face Zaneck and also eyeing up the Seasalt Janelle in khaki although it's oos in my size everywhere.

Edit, I've ordered the Didriksons and Zaneck to try on.

Would love some feedback on any of these coats.

They're water repellant but not fully waterproof

Just looking for a waterproof coat at the moment and came across this thread, which was really helpful. I already have a Janelle and a shorter, older Seasalt jacket, but want something shorter than the Janelle and a bit more lightweight to carry if taking off while on holiday.

I've been going round in circles a bit as don't want to be too warm going in and out of warm buildings on holiday (hence not wanting something bulky to carry).

I'm looking at the Didriksons Marta at the moment - which is just a thin waterproof - and wondering about layers under it, instead of a warm coat. Does anyone have a Marta?

Actually the best solution that's always worked for me before (for heat regulation) was a Cotton Traders waterproof - has that country look similar to the Jack Murphy coats. The Cotton traders one was very cheap! Completely waterproof and not thick, but kept you warm as it made you sweat! Which meant it was ideal for most weathers and could wear a bodywarmer under it in freezing temperatures.

So I could take that on holiday but - it's a bit country outdoors looking.

I like the Helle coat a lot but thinking it could be too warm. It's annoying that Didrikson don't have anything in between a thin Mac and their "mid warm" coats. The nearest thing to that in between warmth is something like the Janelle (which definitely isn't warm enough in winter weather and needs layers. But want something shorter and less bulky.

Any tips appreciated!

Anyone?

Mirabai · 25/10/2024 13:58

These are all really helpful for someone ie me who is looking for a fleece lined mac.

manywanderings · 25/10/2024 14:12

Thank you - that looks good :-) Surprisingly expensive for a Regatta jacket so it must be a good one.

Mirabai - Seasalt have this fleece lined jacket (it has fleece all round inside as opposed to some of the others that only have it at the back). I like this one but didn't want something quite this warm, so I could layer more underneath it.

Castle Cliff jacket - it comes in a mustard colour and a petrol blue colour as well. There are also three different lengths, petite, regular and tall.

Well I’ve just ordered the Regatta jacket and if you use the Autumn code as well as signing up as a member - I got if for £90!

I also just bought a Janelle from the Seasalt outlet on eBay for £113 so I’m happy. 😌

Mirabai · 25/10/2024 18:53

I haven’t seen mentioned on here Rydale Danby - which I really liked but had to return as the waist is too low for me as I’m small. But the actual coat was good quality and just what I was after.

Ladies Full Length Riding Coat UK - Rydale

Elegantly designed in a longer-length style, the Danby riding coat is set to become your new rainy-day companion and is perfect for ladies who like a little more length in their look.

Ooh thank you :-) Good tip. Enjoy your Janelle and Regatta jackets :-)

i bought a Fjallraven Visby last year, wore it all winter, sold my two Didriksons this year, and back to the Visby this year. I hope to wear it for many years to come. I have it in black and find it classy, cosy and completely waterproof. It is spendy but completely waterproof and warm.

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/10/2024 21:09

I've just ordered a Marta @manywanderings.

I'm hoping I can wear it over my bulkier jumpers and fleeces.

mdinbc · 25/10/2024 21:29

Manywanderings - now I'm curious about your holiday...where are you going? Do you need to pack your jacket as well?

There is a sweet spot finding a jacket that is waterproof, warm but not too warm, and lightweight! For travelling, I would rather a lighter coat with a jumper or fleece underneath.

That's what I was thinking - I like the shape :-) But it does seem very thin and just a rainjacket so could need a lot of layers!

Paris in winter :-) It's apparently colder than London, likely to be very wet as well. But I don't want to get overheated if we're in and out of museums etc and the hotel (I know - just keep taking it off but then I have to carry it). I also get overheated very suddenly sometimes and it's unpleasant and brings me out in a rash! On the other hand you need to be warm in cold weather.

So while I like the idea of a warm coat I can just take off. I'm wondering if something like the Marta (thinner and waterproof) with layers I can take off would be easier. But then I'd have to carry a bag to put the layers in lol.

That looks very nice. But ouch - it's £600!

manywanderings · 26/10/2024 03:16

My current worn out all season jacket (sort of) was a Seasalt one from years ago. It was tin cloth but had a slightly padded inner with soft cotton lining. It was ideal for spring and autumn (and even summer sometimes) and in winter with a warm jumper and bodywarmer (although had to leave the coat open to fit the bodywarmer!). It's pretty worn out and not waterproof any more and I also managed to shrink it so it;s a bit tight too. It's not as thin as just an outer thin waterproof that you wear layers under as it had a slight element of warmth as well. Seasalt don't seem to make anything with that kind of slightly padded cotton lining any more.

DisforDarkChocolate · 26/10/2024 06:29

I went for the blue because I found it on sale on another site @manywanderings

At some point I'd like one of the warm parkas with the fur hood but I'm a sale only shopper for good coats.

I know 😓faaar too expensive, worth looking out for second hand or on a deal. Mine was just over £500 last year, only justification is I live somewhere with extreme weather conditions and I hope to wear it until I’m 70 😅

Thank you for that. I'm considering that too :-)

@Itsabeautifuldaytosavelives123 Yes sometimes it's worth it if it lasts a very long time :-) I do find it hard finding the right coat sometimes. I have my wool coat I've had for about 15 years and that was worth it. Still going strong but doesn't get worn as often as a waterproof one.
