Waterproof coat Didriksons / Seasalt / North Face

I'm 48 and usually wear Zara or Cos coats. I'm looking for a waterproof parka, not too frumpy and not necessarily overly warm. I like the Didriksons Luna but it's very expensive although I'm happy to pay as I want it to last.

Just seen the North Face Zaneck and also eyeing up the Seasalt Janelle in khaki although it's oos in my size everywhere.

Edit, I've ordered the Didriksons and Zaneck to try on.

Would love some feedback on any of these coats.

Didrikson all the way.

Cornishmumofone · 16/01/2024 13:08

Various Didriksons (but not Luna) are on SportPursuit: www.sportpursuit.com/products?bid=1741&p=2

They have huge reductions.

My Didrikson has pros and cons. It's a size 12 and I'm now a 16 and it still fits after three or four years, albeit tighter of course. The hood is nicely adaptable/has tightening toggles/fur can be removed, and is big enough for my giant head which is so hard to find.

The pockets are handy (mine have poppers on) and a hidden pocket for cash, and one with a slot for earphones to come out of which fits my phone. It can be cinched in at the waist but honestly what's the point lol. It's definitely waterproof and windproof.

Lovely funnel-ish neck so I don't even need a scarf on. It's definitely warm, I don't need a jumper even in snow if I am active/walking whilst wearing it.

BUT the fabric rips like a bastard, slightest touch on anything sharp and it just rips in a long gash straight away. After washing I need to iron it to reset the waterproofing somehow?! (I didn't know this is a thing and it's really annoying, not sure if it's a usual aspect of a waterproof coat? It's the only item I iron and I begrudge it every time 😂).

Also I bought it thinking it would be The One but somehow it just seems so school run-ish. It's not stylish, it's boring. The black isn't a true enough black for me either. I use it to walk the dog and it performs very well though, and for the freezing beach etc. I would buy from them again but not the soft rippable fabric and also a longer cut (it's above the knees and I get wet legs so longer would have been better).

I bought it to last a minimum of ten years but it already strikes me as one of those things, it's too good, too expensive and too functional to get rid of, but I'm sick of it long before it's given up the ghost 😂

Ignore me - mine is an arctic parka - just had a look at the link again. I prefer the north face one you posted looks wise to a didriksons one. I think it depends whether you care about style or functionality... Have you tried looking at sweaty betty? They have a waterproof parka which I think looks really nice but I don't own it.

I love my didriksons. It’s so warm, water proof and well made . The hood makes a massive difference in the winter because I hate wearing hats so this keeps the wind, cold and wet out. I am on the look out for a new one that’s a bit longer. Mostly it’s not cold enough to wear it- but when the temp does drop I practically live in it.

CharlotteRumpling · 16/01/2024 14:56

I love my Janelle and I got it half price, so less than £80, BUT it's very long. Looks ok on me as I am 5'8, but may be unflattering on a more petite person. Not as stylish as Didrikson, but really good for London weather with jumper underneath and properly waterproof. I have a dark green one.

CharlotteRumpling · 16/01/2024 15:00

Though looking at that Didrikson Luna, it's just as long as the Janelle, and I don't think it looks more stylish.

HillyHoney · 16/01/2024 15:15

I have several Didriksons because they're waterproof, breathable, the hoods are huge, and they just last and last. My oldest one is a parka of 10yrs+ and I love it to death. None of them are very stylish, I'll admit!

Mirabai · 16/01/2024 15:26

Personally I don’t like Didriksons - their puffas are polyester fill not down and look bulky and their parkas are rather dowdy.

CharlotteRumpling · 16/01/2024 15:34

That actually looks glamorous @Mirabai for a waterproof!

DisforDarkChocolate · 16/01/2024 17:08

I got my Didriksons on Brand Alley @Westcott313

Dmsandfloatydress · 16/01/2024 17:19

Didriksons saw me through-20 in lapland. In its fourth year and still looks new. I made my husband buy one and its the only brand I buy for my child. Another one I wish I had heard of sooner.

Westcott313 · 16/01/2024 18:46

I'm still undecided. I just want a warm waterproof coat that doesn't look frumpy. I want to find a khaki janelle in a 14 or 16. I'm 5 ft 8 so length isn't a issue.

Lovely but sold out 🙁

Have you tried Vinted for a pre-owned Janelle? Or the Seasalt eBay store? Seasalt coats come up small in my experience so is the next size up available? Then you’ve room for layers when it’s really cold.

WhereAreWeNow · 17/01/2024 06:41

I've had several Didriksons over the years and I really rate them. There are some discounted on BrandAlley at the moment. I like the look of Seasalt coats but I don't find them as warm as Didriksons. Didriksons also better for me in terms of being nice and long, long sleeves, lots of pockets, and proper big hoods that stay up.

WhereAreWeNow · 17/01/2024 06:42

If you decide you want Seasalt, you can get a bargain on the Seasalt Ebay outlet.

alwaysatthebusstop · 17/01/2024 07:18

I've just bought the Didriksons Luna parka from a company called nevisport for £100. I'm usually a 12 but it was huge! I've now got a 10 but am 8 might actually be better. I love it! It's not too thick but it's properly windproof so still great for this weather if I'm out walking etc. I'd look around once you know what you want 😊

Heatherbell1978 · 17/01/2024 07:32

I bought a Janelle a few months ago and love it! So many reviews on here which say frumpy which is the opposite of what I wanted (like to think I'm fairly trendy at my age!) but I ordered one after finding many I tried of other brands were indeed frumpy. I'm shorter than you and find it long but I like that. I went down a size so it's quite slim fitting.

CharlotteRumpling · 17/01/2024 08:22

I don't really pay much attention to the " frumpy" reviews on S and B. Different things suit different people with different lifestyles. Obvious but true!

Westcott313 · 17/01/2024 09:21

£100? I searched for it but can't find it.

This is nice but I don't like the branded logo on the hood which is a shame as it's a lovely coat
