I need new trainers and have no idea which type.

They are for walking to the office (1 mile each way) and I usually wear them with dresses.

im in Scotland… so need to be able to cope with rain.

usually I wear superga, but I don’t know if they are too out of style now

I have many of the above trainers -
-the Chuck Taylor converse - I wear them so much.
--the sambas - I really like them but the material dirties easily.
-the vejas - they are uncomfortable and I feel like a cliche wearing them. I havent worn in about six months.
-the internationalists - I really like these but they are very slippy and I can't wear if the ground is wet/likely to get wet.
-New Balance - I feel they are very fuddy and oddly shaped although very comfortable.

New Balance or Nike Air Force One. And I’ve seen a few super trendy people wearing Saucony Jazz. Also I have my eye on some Grenson sneakers but they’re a bit out of my price range.

Elmeux · 14/01/2024 00:07

I have no idea what's trendy but I love a pair of Adidas Gazelles, converse, and onitsuka tigers that I've bought the same colour way for the last 20 years

sawnotseen · 14/01/2024 00:39

I'm 52 and wear new balance, adidas sambas, prada, converse
My adult kids wear new balance, Nike air, Alexander McQueen, Prada, converse

tobee · 14/01/2024 02:35

I got some New Balance as everyone seemed to say they were soooo comfortable. Unfortunately, they rub the top of my foot and are very painful after a time.

I love my gazelles - super comfortable and light. My gola bullet blaze are equally comfortable.

I also find my new Mint Velvet platform trainers extremely comfortable; probably not trendy though as not a trainer brand!

Greycatclub · 14/01/2024 07:05

Sambas were really the trainer of 2023, 2024 is more Spezials, Gazelles, Salomons, Onitsuka Tiger…

Cyclistmumgrandma · 14/01/2024 07:38

I've just discovered Allbirds, Water resistant, and sustainable. Made from merino wool or bamboo and washable. Comfortable and a good choice of colours. Several styles. I have 2 pairs now.

Hokas are a thing too.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 14/01/2024 07:54

I love my plain white Nike air Jordans. Some of the others on here are probably more 'in' now but I think Jordans are a bit of a classic like Stan smiths (which I also have but wear less now) . My teens have sambas and gazelles so I won't be going there! Plus I really like the chunkiness of the Nikes.

Agree I have never seen anyone below 40 in Vejas. I have had a few pairs of new balance but their traditional ones are to narrow for my liking.

Dramasloth · 14/01/2024 09:03

Sketchers. Cos I’m old

Agree · 14/01/2024 09:18

What I see people wearing in the city centre to walk to work and back are Nike, On Cloud, Skechers, HOKA - they're also my faves because they're comfortable, soft, supportive, and can be washed (make sure on low temp less than 30). I see a lot of Balenciaga too if you can afford it, it's still a popular brand.

Most of the footwear mentioned above are flat 'pumps' or skate shoe and don't offer any support to the foot, heel, or arch. That's all good if you're young and fit and slim but believe me when you get a bit older, it's very unhealthy for the foot.

FluffyFanny · 14/01/2024 09:21

New balance are my favourites as they seem to fit well and be really comfy and lots of styles to pick from!

I've got the 550's and they are great because they come in a specific women's fit as well as the unisex which seem to fit my feet better- not as wide! https://www.newbalance.co.uk/pd/550/BBW550V1-43972.html?dwvar_BBW550V1-43972_style=BBW550DG

Blankscreen · 14/01/2024 09:47

It depends if you want pumps or trainers.

I've got vejas and they are so uncomfortable I haven't worn them for about a year.

I've got the Adidas sambas and they are actually comfortable but definitely more of a pump as are my Jordan 1s.

If I want pure comfort I wear my Nike Air Dawns and I've just bought courdory air max 90 which are both like walking on clouds.

I've tried Hoff trainer but they didn't suit my feet but some of them are lovely.

SirChenjins · 13/01/2024 16:46

Watching with interest. I’ve got Vejas but according to one S&B thread this is classed as a middle aged mum trainer and best avoided apparently 🤷‍♀️

God I wish we could stop with the old=bad, young = good crap.

I don’t want to dress like an 18 year old

Blankscreen · 14/01/2024 09:52

Crime London do some v nice pump style trainers as well. They are also very comfy.

MammaTo · 14/01/2024 09:58

I try and take pointers from my 24 year old trendy younger sister and she says adidas gazelles are back in style - not sure on comfort or practicality but that’s what she says 😂

Divebar2021 · 14/01/2024 10:02

The fact that the Sambas and Gazelles are so hot are the reason I’m not getting any because I want to wear them for a couple of years. I tend to look at the colourways and shape that will go with my wardrobe before the brand. I got some ASICS at Christmas and they are by far the most comfortable I’ve ever worn. I was tempted by some Flower Mountain because I like Japanese brands but they’re quite busy colour wise. My other picks were the Hoka Clifton 9 and the Saucony Shadow 5000 and if they’re not “ what everyone is wearing” then I’m happy about that.

ShyTed · 14/01/2024 10:20

I’ve noticed everyone wearing the goretex Nike. Great for waking & waterproof!

i have 3 different styles of new balance that I live in.
530 for everyday
327 for everyday
fresh foam for walking

Olindia · 14/01/2024 10:39

I’ve fallen in love with some Victoria trainers? I’d never heard of them and not sure if they are in or out, old or new but I really like the look of them.

MiddleAgedKirin · 14/01/2024 10:41

Middle-aged mum in London here! Last year I saw mostly Samba and some Gazelle and Spezial (all Adidas), on those who were/would've been wearing Veja a few years ago. I don't think they're suitable for rain, but are Superga?
Not sure what this year will bring yet, everyone's in boots.

Moier · 14/01/2024 10:43

I only wear Skechers .. because they are the most comfortable for me! But I'm 65 and disabled. I wear with midi and maxi dresses and l couldn't give a stuff if people think I'm " not in fashion". I think l look okay and my dresses are classy.

Heather37231 · 14/01/2024 11:05

I just don’t understand why so many people wear Converse, Adidas Samba, Stan Smith, Superga for walking anywhere at all.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the vintage aesthetic, but every time I have tried on a pair they feel like having an ironing board tied to your foot with a bit of old sack!

Feet get really cold, sole doesn’t flex when you walk and absolutely no arch support.

I have taken a plunge and bough this style in the past thinking maybe they’d break in but nope.

How can you all know what proper running trainers like Nikes feel like and yet go back to these for day-to-day?

(I also have the same issue with Saltwaters in summer).

whirlyhead · 14/01/2024 11:09

I find converse really uncomfortable - there’s no padding in them at all. I have vejas which are very comfie but I mainly wear allbirds. I wear the woolly ones in winter and the canvas ones in summer. They are great for walking in!

clowniform · 14/01/2024 11:18

Converse Chuck 70s have more padded soles @whirlyhead bit thicker than Vejas even.

@Heather37231 I wear 3 of the styles you listed 😁(not Sambas) but I don't have problem feet or walk too much (less than 4 miles a day) and also just... switch to warmer options if it's too cold. Currently in a pair of Bobbies boots with sheepskin insoles. Though tbf I don't know what 'proper running trainers' feel like, because vain.
