DS 19 wants a suit(s)

Student DS wants a suit for internships; maybe also smart enough for smart parties/ sober enough for weddings and funerals. Or perhaps a day suit and a dress suit. Budget: high street I guess.
Are M&S and Next good places to look? Anywhere else?

There are a few formals at his university and I remember mostly in my day people hired once or twice a year for black tie but maybe it's worth having one of his own.

Where did you buy your DS's first suit?

my son has to wear a suit for school. Got one from Next with 2x trousers. We went to M&S but the stock was rubbish.

ScribeSev · 13/01/2024 15:33

@allaboardtheskytrain

That's good to know. I've just looked and there's one near my parents which is useful to know

Cyclingmummy1 · 13/01/2024 15:37

We found Next better than M&S for length and they have fun linings (DS wears a suit for school). Navy is more versatile - goes with chinos as well as suit trousers - but he needs charcoal for more formal school events (Carol service, concerts) and, sadly, a recent funeral.

thetailorofgloucester · 13/01/2024 15:45

Another vote for Next. We went to M&S first but the sizing was too big for someone who is very slim. Next suits were perfect and fit him like a bespoke suit. Highly recommend.

I'm not sure how old your son is but, if there's any chance he might still be growing then I'd be careful about how much to spend. We bought our son's first suit in Asda and by the end of that year he's grown out of it.

He's 19 so has stopped growing (which is why he didn't have one until now!)

Austin Reed. A beautiful navy single breasted suit which has done for funerals, weddings and graduations.

Goodness knows where I'd look now. Men's high street tailoring was bad enough pre-Covid. I doubt it'll have got much better.

I miss Austin Reed 😢

We bought DS 18 a first suit from Next. Sadly, for the funeral of one of his friends last year.

It's come in for interviews since then. And prom.

I got a suit from Next too - top quality and good price- dh loves it.

Ideally you'd get a fitted made to measure suit but that's £1000's from Saville Row

I'd totally do that if I had the funds!

My ds always buys any smart work wear, including suits, from Vinted or Ebay, sometimes charity shops. He's a fairly standard size which helps.

Yes I think one new one for now then once we know his size and shape he can do that. We love Vinted in our house.

You can go to a local tailor to get it fitted perfectly if need be

But tbh most will fit our young men pretty well

Yes I suppose see what's out there. We have a good local tailor who can do alterations.

My boy is quite muscly so we might look at both. Thanks. Useful to know. DS2 is skinny so noted!

Yes Next have a slim fit line - my son is slim and the fun linings are lovely.

Definitely want a lined jacket. Thanks. Some shopping to do!

2 trousers is a good idea. DS always rips his on the bum. Luckily he is quite good with a needle and thread on his casual trousers.

If you have a slaters menswear anywhere near, I would recommend them. They have a wide range and they alter the suits to fit for no extra cost. They'll then deliver them to you.

My DS had a three piece suit from there for £120 and it was fitted perfectly.

I will definitely visit slaters next time we're near one

Second Slaters. Someone I knew got his wedding suit there and re-uses it for other occasions. ExH has also got nice bits from there.

If your son prefers something slightly more casual I think Joe Browns "hipster" suits are great. I like the tweedy ones the most.

Pumpkintopf · 13/01/2024 16:33

We took DS to Moss Bros just before he started uni. Tried the high street usual suspects first - M&S had one choice in store, next had two. With MB we booked a free 1-1 'style session' which meant we had a sales associate the whole time helping with sizing, selection and pricing as well as suggestions on ties and other accessories. Plus they offered student discount. We bought him a tux and dress shirt and a navy suit with a couple of shirts and ties. He's got loads of wear out of both which surprised me particularly the suit but made it a worthwhile purchase. Booking the appointment made it a very easy process and I was glad we had as the shop got busy so we'd have had to wait for an assistant otherwise.

Pygtrail · 13/01/2024 16:35

PandaG · 13/01/2024 14:34

Moss Brothers, as DS's waist was too small for what M and S and Debenham (few years, back now) had in store. He also has a dinner suit, he had formals a couple of times a term so was worth buying.

I second this we bought DS a DKNY one from MOSS Brothers for Prom when he was 15 (August baby) he wore it for other occasions too during college it doesn’t fit him now he’s 18 but going to get him another one from there. The DKNY ones are stylish, not that pricey and the quality is good for the price.

Copperoliverbear · 13/01/2024 17:03

M and s and next are fine. X

CurlewKate · 13/01/2024 17:07

Do you have a Slaters? They have more in interesting but still classic suits and very helpful but not overwhelming assistants.

StamppotAndGravy · 13/01/2024 17:19

I would go for Slaters. They've got a huge range and are good for slim teens. I wouldn't buy a posh wool one because if he's anything like we were it will need cleaning regularly after spilt beer and sweat at formals and he will probably change shape and bulk out a bit in his 20s. Nice wool suits are a bit of a right of passage in your mid-20s when you've been promoted, or a wedding present from your parents. Polyester is fine when you're just starting!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 13/01/2024 17:27

Another one for Slaters here. Affordable and the alterations service means a good fit. The one ds has for school says dry clean only but merrily gets bunged through the wash.

Dilbertian · 13/01/2024 17:36

Yup, Slaters. For all the reasons listed.

MaxJLHardy · 13/01/2024 17:36

If you get his measurements worth a look on eBay
