Does anyone have any suggestions for what a 5' tall size 16 woman could wear to a fancy evening awards thing? I am really struggling! Budget of up to £500 ish. Don't really do heels but could manage a bit of a heel I guess. Would prefer something a bit interesting/ edgy as am hoping the outfit can look good/ fashionable even if the wearer is a weeble.

Maybe google Dawn French or Miriam Margoyles to see the kind of styles they wear to events and get ideas of what to look for?

Sodndashitall · 12/01/2024 13:58

Go to a high end department store and ask to see a personal shopper. You may think they are all geared around skinny 20 year olds but of course they don't always have the cash lol.
I've found them really good in the past for practical suggestions on nice outfits and also you can try on loads of stuff nicely in a changing room without schlepping form place to place. Selfridges Harvey Nicks etc all used to have them (haven't checked in a while as have no nice events these days lol)

I'd say style wise maybe A line shift dress or something that doesn't need a waist and don't be scared for a bold print as that can be the focus rather than the shape underneath !

Personal shopper might work - thanks I hadn't thought of that!

Vivienne Westwood dresses look best on bigger bodies.

cremebrulait · 14/01/2024 08:34

I agree with personal shopper but can you tell us your shape? I purchased an evening gown - down to ankles. Bust has scattered beadwork. I’ve worn it to such dinners over the last 20 years!! Im an apple. 5’6 size 16/18. The length of the gown, solid block colour and weight of material means nothing clings in the wrong spot, and its a sleek silhouette for gala type events. Plus it puts the focus on my face and hair. Always easy to update style with hair and makeup and jewelry.

Years ago I asked for help in a Simply be store and they were amazing. I don't know if they still have physical stores but they were very much geared towards dressing plus size body shapes. The woman even came out down town with me to buy shoes and accessories as they didn't have what I needed.

AnnaMagnani · 14/01/2024 08:40

Vivienne Westwood sizing is really small! Those bodies may not be a size 6 but they aren;t that big either.

Speaking as someone gutted when they lost weight and thought they could get their dream dress.

I'm also a potato, now a size 20-22 but I spent years wobbling on the cusp of the 16-18 boundary.

I found full length dresses were good, as they extend your height. Empire line is good if you have bigger boobs than stomach. I not empire then a waist tie loosely tied to pull in at the upper waist can work well.

My suggestion would be don't try too hard to look slimmer, instead enjoy your clothes. I've found lots of inspiration online on Instagram, of women who are larger sizes and can still wear bold looks.

For example , contrary to old advice, I find bigger patterns work better than smaller.

A cleavage can work well to make you feel less frumpy, and so either a wrap style or deep v neckline can be flattering.

Alternatively you can also really dress up a plain dark coloured dress with interesting accessories and shoes - so tempting to use your budget to do that.

Most brands now do a size 16, so you've got great choice. I'd go somewhere like a big shopping centre and do the personal shopper.

Another couple of tips although these are online:

Scarlett and Jo do the most incredible range of occasion wear for larger sizes - and they have countless photos of real women looking and feeling fabulous to inspire.

There are other online ones I looked at for my brother's wedding, I'll try to dig them out....

Shopaholic100 · 14/01/2024 11:33

I am exactly the same height and size as you. Try John Lewis, especially if you can get to one of their larger stores, like Westfield. They have a good range of fancy clothes, bags and shoes. I would definitely recommend Dune mid heeled ones. I have a couple, they give you height and are really comfy. You could try online places with free returns, if you have time. Try and go for petite or short fit if you are buying a long dress. The regular fit in long dresses just don’t always fit right otherwise. The waistline ends up too far down and the shoulders offer look strange and hang off. Amazon often have good things too, sometimes with prime delivery and free returns. Most importantly get something you really love, in a colour that suits you. I always think that instantly makes you look better in anything. Good luck.

Are you saying that you are an apple shape by saying potato? Do you have slender arms and legs?

Movinghouseatlast · 14/01/2024 11:44

Esska Charlie shoes are meant to be really comfortable but very glam.

Notgivingup54 · 14/01/2024 11:47

I bought a dress from Hobbs (size 16) for a wedding and had quite a few compliments. X

I think you may find something suitable on Bombshell.

RockaLock · 14/01/2024 21:26

What is the award ceremony for?

I only ask because I recently went to the annual Charity Awards, which were held in central London and were black tie - but a large number of attendees had very different ideas of what constituted black tie! Some people were very casual indeed, but do you know what, no one batted an eyelid and definitely no one cared.

I considered buying something new, but then thought wtf, why would I spend money on what is basically, for me, a work function. So I just wore a black dress and shoes that I already had. And it was fine.

Sorry, I know that's not what you'd asked, but I just didn't want you to spend £500 on a dress and then get there and wish you hadn't bothered!

BasiliskStare · 14/01/2024 22:11

@Anansisu I would try John Lewis personal shoppers . For my brother's wedding I made a special trip to Harrods and Harvey Nichols , Oh my the prices. Not like they were when I was a student ( not that I could afford them then ) . How about this , not sure how reliable or whether looks the same as the photograph , but way below your budget - They do a shorter version. Nicely , photographed on a slim model and also on a bigger model. Some other posters may be able to tell you how good these dresses are. But if a one off event why not spend less ?

I hope you find what you like

Anansisu · 15/01/2024 09:32

Thank you so much! Was just coming on to give a hopeful bump.

To give a bit more detail - my legs are quite slim, hate my upper arms. I do have a bit of a waist but my torso is pretty short, like the rest of me so the overall effect is pretty apple! I am in central London so I can give Liberty a go, I like a lot of the dresses on that link.

The event is the Baftas.

My suggestion would be don't try too hard to look slimmer, instead enjoy your clothes. I've found lots of inspiration online on Instagram, of women who are larger sizes and can still wear bold looks.

This is exactly my thought - there is not really any point in trying to look smaller but I would like to try to get something a bit special.
