Vaseline around the eyes?

Alohapotato · 12/01/2024 07:27

Hello there, I use tretinoin at night and after tretinoin I use cerave pm lotion as tretinoin dries my skin face. Yesterday night I used vaseline on top of the cerave pm and my undereye and crown's feet are very smooth and plump today. My lips too.
I would like to know if anyone has been using vaseline around the eyes long term and what are the results? I told my friends in the WhatsApp group ( we are all in our 40's) and most had replied vaseline can give me skin cancer?
I do use cerave am 50 spf every morning before going to work and i use antihelio la roche posay when im in the beach as my grandmother had skin cancer and im very worried about it.

Thank you.

Might give you milia - not sure that is the correct spelling!

CrunchyCarrot · 12/01/2024 07:34

When people make blanket claims like that I would want to know the evidence for saying so. Vaseline is triple distilled so unlikely to contain much in the way of contaminants.

I only use it on my lips at night and if I have a cold it's brilliant for around the nostrils! Haven't used it under my eyes, I tend to avoid putting anything on that sensitive area.

BlueBlueBerries · 12/01/2024 07:37

Vaseline is an occlusive which will prevent dehydration in that area. To be honest I would apply Vaseline around my eye area first before applying the tret as this will prevent it migrating to the under eye and causing you dryness and irritation.

joyfulnessss · 12/01/2024 07:39

What you did is referred ti as slugging. As Vaseline is an occlusive it traps in moisture. Ur doesn't actually moisturise but it has a similar effect by preventing water loss overnight.

Some people find using it wort tret intensifies the tret action and causes too much irritation. If this isn't happening to you then carry on. If you get any issues relating to using an occlusive (blocked pores etc) then back off.

Fat fingered typos. Sorry

I use every day on my lips (the pink one) & at one stage I started using as a blusher (it works and looks lovely).

After a few weeks I had a good few blackheads on my cheeks where I used the Vaseline. Pretty sure it was that as I don’t normally get them; was v annoying so wouldn’t recommend personally

the pink one has flavour and colour added, I don't think is designated for skin just lips care. I'm using the original one only has white petrolatum as ingredients.

Thank you, I did not know the name, I'll research more about slugging. I did not know intensifies the tret action.

I'm using tret there as I'm side sleeper and I'm getting lines on my right undereye , not the left one. I tried to sleep on my back but I change my position when I fell sleep..

How does tret work if it dries skin? Shouldn't it moisture skin?

youveturnedupwelldone · 13/01/2024 07:22

My understanding is that Vaseline will work as a layer that keeps moisture in, but doesn't provide moisture itself- basically as a barrier.

I think you'll find if you do what you've done round your eyes a lot you'll start seeing signs of clogged pores like milia.

Once in a while it can help with dryness but I wouldn't do it as part of your every day routine.

I use vaseline to remove waterproof mascara,at night.it leaves a little film on. It was recommended by a plastic surgeon. Got collared in Boots one day by one of the make up ladies, trying to get me to try and buy, chatting, when I told her, she clutched her pearls, told me it was dangerous. Would trust the plastic surgeon over her anyday. How long have I been using it, over 30 years, can't remember exactly how long. I'm 73, and hardly any crows feet. I have been "accused" of having Botox and even a facelift!

Nannyfannybanny · 13/01/2024 07:36

Do you have acne, otherwise I would not be using tret, that's what it's specifically designed for.

bryceQ · 13/01/2024 07:52

Loads of people slug. There's a well known dermatologist on Instagram who swears by vaseline and recommends it loads. I use it in winter over my moisturiser

MillicentRogers · 13/01/2024 07:52

I have used Vaseline at night for decades and it really does keep wrinkles at bay. It doesn't block pores either but I do not apply it to my nose.

In recent years I have switched from the Vaseline brand to using ICAN LONDON ROSE 100% PURE PETROLEUM JELLY which is available from Amazon.

Wond3rment · 13/01/2024 08:08

I have used Vaseline around my eye area and have gotten milia. For me, I would not recommend it but from this thread it sounds like it’s different for different people.

I don't have acne, I use it for anti aging.

Do you know the name of the dermatologist please? Do you use it at night or day time too? Thank you.

That's amazing and makes me more motivated to keep using vaseline. Thank you.

At the moment I don't have milia, I did had in the past after using eye cream bit I think now because I use tret on that area too keeps the milia away.

Long term (and I mean about thirty years) Vaseline around the eyes at night person. My eyes get dry and irritated without it. I used to worry it would affect my vision or cause some other issue but it's been totally fine.

I'm not a dermatologist so I can't really explain how it works but what I understood is tret peels layers of your skin and helps to produce collagen.

My skin was oily and since using tret is normal, dry if I don't use face cream after tret.

Do you have wrinkles or do you think vaseline has helped with that? Thank you x

I'm not sure about cancer, personally never heard of that.
However, I've been sleeping with Vaseline on my eyes for a few years now.
After covid I've experienced so many awful symptoms and my skin dried out so badly! I find vaseline is the only thing that I can put on to help. I also sometimes use it throughout the day if the skin is particularly dry.
A colleague of mine bought me a product called Nursem- there's one in a pot called caring skin fix which I also use but not nearly as regularly as Vaseline.
