Is my new rain gear suitable around town? What do you wear in the rain?

I recently moved out to the country in the hills of northern England. It is quite rainy here even by uk standards, so I purchased a long raincoat and tall wellies to keep me fully dry specially for those tipping it down dog walks.

Would this outfit be suitable for a rainy day in town as well, or do I need to invest in another set of waterproofs? What do you wear in the rain?

I agree with the PP who said that the coat is fine for either but I rarely see wellies in a town setting (then again I live in a city).

I'd also add that I'm not sure wellies are all that great for walking long distances regularly in terms of comfort / warmth / posture and back pain.

You need some proper waterproof boots OP

I suppose everyone is different but as another person located very oop north and who grew up in rural even further oop north on a farm I find the idea that some one is so time short that during lambing time they can't even find 2 seconds to take off your sheep body fluid spattered coveralls.

Maybe it's all different now but farmers attending the mart didn't turn up there wearing the messy on the farm gear.

OMG that comment was meant in jest, as in humour 🙄 Seems I have inadvertently triggered several people! As if I would really go to a shop in lambing coveralls.

To be said in jest it would need to be funny. Looks more like backtracking.

Oh fgs! Some people just take everything so seriously. Not wasting any more energy on a discussion about bloody raincoats.

What’s funny? I have a manky, muddy, warm coat that’s stuffed with dog paraphernalia for when I’m walking the dog by the river or up in the hills (I live in Scotland so it’s cold here - the oop north here is south to us). If I’m going into town I change out of it and put on a different coat and - prepare to hold onto your pelvic floor - I even have a different coat for work.

Edited

Which is fine. A dog walking coat, a work coat and a going out coat? Absolutely.

A”town” coat and a “country” coat just sounds daft.

SirChenjins · 10/01/2024 15:30

Why does it sound daft? I wear one coat when I'm in the countryside because it serves a specific purpose, I wear my other one in town because again, it serves a purpose. Same with my work one. I'll refer to the former as my dog walking coat and the latter as my work coat, but the premise is the same.

The worst thing I think in really wet weather is jeans. They get soaked unless your coat reaches your boots, take ages to dry so you’re walking round shops with soggy, cold fabric on your legs. I’d never thought that the mock leather ones might be waterproof, worth considering.
I’m a hill farmer & to be honest would always put on something more presentable if I had to drive into town or even the supermarket instead of the work gear for tending things here. Though my old good wool coats do get relegated to workwear, having degenerated from best to less best to gardening to general workwear, on cold dry days, which don’t happen very often. 😁
My Daily wellies aren’t “County” they’re bog standard black ones bought from the shop attached to the local feed mill, perfectly serviceable. Who knew there were fashions in wellies 😂

@Darklane, yes, they're pretty waterproof. I had worried with all the 'skinnies are sooo dated now' that they wouldn't be available (got used to dry legs) but they are and in new cuts other than skinny. The coating does wear off some of them but it takes a year or so. They're pretty cheap. I reserve them just for wet weather now as I did get a bit sick of wearing them a year or so ago but they're a useful addition to the wardrobe.

Darklane · 10/01/2024 15:53

That’s really useful to know, thank you.

@Darklane, I think it's influencers that are responsible for this. The horsey / moved to the country ones. Well, it's their job I suppose. They get sent all this luxury branded country wear and wear the full set of it to do their influencing. Don't have to be influenced though. I just think 'So they're telling us wellies are cool now! 😁'. Except mine are either in the black hole under the stairs or the garage somewhere. I keep meaning to find them but usually plump for my walking boots should the need arise.

Darklane · 10/01/2024 17:17

Who’d ever have thought “ influencer” could be a career 😂

heyhohello · 10/01/2024 17:21

@Darklane, I know but they reap in more revenue for the companies they influence for than advertorial/adverts in glossy magazines/tv. I think it's because the type of media people consume has changed.
