Is my new rain gear suitable around town? What do you wear in the rain?

I recently moved out to the country in the hills of northern England. It is quite rainy here even by uk standards, so I purchased a long raincoat and tall wellies to keep me fully dry specially for those tipping it down dog walks.

Would this outfit be suitable for a rainy day in town as well, or do I need to invest in another set of waterproofs? What do you wear in the rain?

That looks like it will keep you very dry! If it is tipping it down it would be ok around town because with that sort of rain fashion becomes more about function. However for more moderate rain an umbrella and mackintosh would suffice. Long leather boots would also work well, as would leather trousers. If the rain is lighter tights and a skirt / jeans / cords and wooden trousers would be ok.

Woollen! Never seen wooden trousers! 😂

Rayon/viscose is made from wood fibres! Love the coat OP, where is it from please?

heyhohello · 09/01/2024 08:07

@NigelHarmansNewWife oh yes! Didn't think of that. 🙂

VisionsOfSplendour · 09/01/2024 08:12

Did it never rain where you lived before? I live semi rurally and wear the same clothes where ever I am if it's raining hard, maybe I'm too mean to buy two sets of things 😀

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 09/01/2024 08:18

I've invested in better outdoor gear since we moved to live semi rurally. I rarely walk on pavements when I go for walks now and you're much more exposed to the weather as less shelter from houses, etc. I rarely carry an umbrella either as it's more of a hindrance.

I wear Stutterheim in town.

twistyizzy · 09/01/2024 08:31

I am rural NE and we spend Oct-March going to the shops (M+S included) looking a lot more battered than you 🤣. Farmers wives spend most of their time walking around Sainsbury's in old green overtrousers, wellies and jacket. You will be fine.

I wear Stutterheim in town.

They look super waterproof and more modern but expensive. Do they make long raincoats, like cover down to my wellies long? Hate wet legs!

Me too! Love my Stutterheim Mosebacke model.

So in moderate/light rain my current rain gear is "too much" for town? Sorry for asking, this is my first time living in a rainy country😂

Yes, I have the long Moseback one.

Jennalong · 09/01/2024 08:42

Tbh wear what you like on a dog walk , it's something you have to do come wind , rain , or shine . I'd much rather bus comfortably dressed than sorry what I looked like.

GoodlifeGlow · 09/01/2024 08:44

I don’t go out in public in rainwear, I hate it. Fine for at home/walking the dog where no one sees me but I hate plastic coats I’ve never met one I actually like the look of. When I’m in town I don’t feel the need for a raincoat I either wait until it stops or wear a normal coat and umbrella. I’m 40 I should have grown up by now but I think I have a cagoule related trauma from my childhood!

twistyizzy · 09/01/2024 08:46

See I don't know whereabouts you live @ThatTallGirl but this would look ridiculous in our area. Way too fashionable and probably wouldn't withstand wear and tear.
Bashed up Barbour, ridgeline, schoffel etc are the go to around here. All in navy/dark green colours. You would stick out like a sore thumb in a pink raincoat.
I think you are way over thinking this. Going into town isn't a fashion show unless you are near a big city I suppose.

Doggymummar · 09/01/2024 08:47

I live in in a county town and have never seen that sort of rain gear. Probably stuck in the past but it's Barbour's round here and kangol wellies. I haven't worn my wellies in about a year though as we have footpaths through the woods I walk the dog in. She could use some rain gear tho.

ThatTallGirl · 09/01/2024 08:50

That looks great for town! Updated style but still long and presume it's quite waterproof

You just might find it all a bit cumbersome. Like muddy walking boots/wellies in a posh restaurant. Mackintoshes tend to be a bit lighter than waxed jackets especially full length waxed jackets. Leather boots lighter than wellies or muck boots. Pavements are clean and you don't require heavy soles. Added to this in town you tend to be in and out of buildings. The buildings also shelter the pavements from wind which means umbrellas work better outside and can be folded away and stored in a bag or put on the umbrella stand inside.

twistyizzy · 09/01/2024 08:55

I'm just in awe of people getting changed "to go into town" 🤣. Honestly didn't realise that this was a thing. Maybe I should think of this during lambing time when I nip to M+S in my coveralls with various fluids all over them.

Mikkismum · 09/01/2024 08:56

Love your coat and would be more than happy wearing it in a town/city. Would probably ditch the wellies in favour of my boots unless it was really tipping it down.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 09/01/2024 08:56

I have that raincoat OP, it’s brilliant. I would wear it in town, providing it’s reasonably clean, because I prefer to stay dry rather than worry about being fashionable!

Edited

I'm in outskirts of a mid-sized country town in north west England

@twistyizzy oh I get it now... This is a one upmanship thread between how rural and countrified we can be with our battered ancient (once expensive centuries ago) outdoor gear.

Well, I live in the suburbs. I suppose it's akin to me walking into Aldi in my honking running gear after polishing off a short 10k....

Wearing clean appropriate clothing is nothing to be ashamed of.
