That's it really! Looking for inspiration...

Cashmere jumpers! I wear mine everyday.
A nice pair of leggings for comfy wear- Lululemon
A nice winter coat- I love everything Max Mara

Quality over quantity for sure.

Ooh
Veja trainers
Arket and toast jumpers
Dilling merino/silk thermals/PJ set
A Hobbs fitted coat or jacket in a neutral colour (I have a lovely one I got in a sale ages ago, buts it’s a bright colour and not as useful)
A proper ladylike bag, maybe a leather Orla Kiely one
And I’d probably have a browse at places like Plumo, American Vintage, Anthropologie and Whistles - shops I like but generally don’t shop at because of the prices. And just see what grabbed me.

I’ve run through that 2K in no time! I’m not a capsule wardrobe person really. It’s more about what really feels like “me” and things like like wearing, plus natural fabrics and made to last things if possible.

Just a heads up in case of interest, I got a GORGEOUS camel Hobbs wool coat from Vinted, new with tags, for about 50% of label price. There's often lots on there without tags but in great condition too for cheap..

£2000 isn't all that much. - a bit crass. £2000 to spend at once is an absolute fortune to some.

OP - do you need clothes for both work and casual?

I'd probably start with:
a couple of pairs of jeans - I actually like M&S ones so about £90 for two pairs
a couple of plain jumpers - up to about £80 each
flat ankle boots - probably around £120
heeled ankle boots - ditto
trainers - probably around £100
a coat - maybe around £100 in the sale
a midi dress and a mini dress
a couple of bras - get fitted
a plain silky shirt or blouse that I can wear to dress up the jeans
a printed skirt or blouse
a skirt - maybe a leather pencil skirt, or maybe a denim one: it will need to work with both jumpers and both shirts
leather jacket and/or some sort of blazer

Apple2023 · 09/01/2024 19:58

@flipflopfly this is such helpful advice. I just wrote a list myself, it was so useful to see what outfits I have for each occasion and where I might be missing things.

For a whole revamp of smart and casual in decent brands, £2000 isn't loads. A pair of
Levi's will set you back £100. A decent pair of leather boots is going to be £150.

I didn't mean to sound crass or to belittle anyone.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/01/2024 20:10

No, it won't necessarily buy lots and lots of clothes. But as a revamp of basics all at once to hone back to a wardrobe of items that need to work hard, most people would see it as a significant outlay.

Levis and leather boots would both be excellent, long lasting and useful purchases. Those, a coat, and a few more things perhaps from some of the lists below, would be a really good start and could give a lot of bang for their buck.

The latest Me and Em look book was delivered today. I love the style and clothes but can’t afford the prices so use it for inspiration and find high street or Vinted alternatives.

Vicliz24 · 09/01/2024 20:20

I think I'd buy some very lovely basics . Basics are generally what we wear day to day . A good coat and boots because for 7 months of the year that's the two things people see . A bag that's both practical and makes you happy. The best jeans you can afford in a classic cut like straight leg . A couple of summer dresses in linen or cotton. Four wool jumpers . Neutral sandals and one pair of trainers. Two cotton shirts and four plain T-shirts. A decent swimsuit. Finally some leggings and a sweatshirt/ hoodie . That covers all bases except underwear. Definitely get fitted for bras and buy plain knickers and socks .

flipflopfly · 09/01/2024 22:19

@Apple2023 glad it resonated. It sounds OTT but honestly that one piece of advice completely changed the way I shopped.

LittleRedRidingSnood · 09/01/2024 22:33

Thank you everyone! So many good pointers. And I feel that I'm on the right track, as I've already bought 2 pairs of Levis and lace up camel leather ankle boots.

I'm 5'4" and really can't wear high waisted. Ideally I need a low waist (which on me just sits right and doesn't look low!). So, struggling a bit with trousers and straight jeans. The only ones Levis do with a low waist are bootleg, which I like even if they're not trendy, but would like some cropped jeans or trousers with low waist, if anyone knows if such a thing exists!

I'm freelance from home, so don't really need any work clothes, which probably explains why I'm so casual and do find it a bit tricky to dress up a bit, i.e. for drinks out, but find it fine to dress up a lot (full length dress).

Can anyone recommend where to buy good t-shirts? Not too thin, but comfy and with a nice fit?

OP posts:
Mairzydotes · 09/01/2024 22:43

I'd probably buy things to add to what I already have and make it better
A winter coat
A jacket for when it's warm
Boots
Sandals.

I wouldn't get everything at once, see how your style evoles

LittleRedRidingSnood · 09/01/2024 23:10

Oh no, I think I will blow it all at Dilling! Do you know what the sizing is like for their merino pieces? I'm inbetween two sizes; not sure whether to go up or down. Also, do you think you could wear the tees as outer wear?

There was a winter one and I thought wouldn't it be lovely to live like that or I would I get fed up? Worth looking at @LittleRedRidingSnood

I also have that book and I agree that the "look" can be achieved without spending 1000 on one outfit.

I like that a lot and I think the colours could be adjusted to suit personal colouring. For example, I don't suit black because it washes me out, so I could swap the blank items for navy and the grey could become camel.

Guavafish1 · 09/01/2024 23:58

tailored clothes

Good quality shoes and coat

ConciseQueen · 10/01/2024 00:41

Buy a fab outfit for going out to drinks at 6pm, nice bar: Coat, top, trousers, shoes, accessories. Such a confidence boost to have that.

Now you’ve set the tone for the new you and you can build from there.

Can anyone recommend where to buy good t-shirts? Not too thin, but comfy and with a nice fit?

Superdry do really nice fitted t-shirts. In summer, they're usually on offer 3 for £50. They are really smart, different neck lines, wash really well, and very comfy.

Notmyhair · 10/01/2024 09:08

@Kwasi that's good to know as I was looking at them last year but was unsure.

Kwasi · 10/01/2024 09:18

@Notmyhair

I have 6 of them. I wear the V-necks for work, as they look smart, and the round necks for casual. Definitely going to get 3 more this summer if they run the offer.

MerryMidwinter · 10/01/2024 09:37

I really like Wears My Money but she's tall and slim so everything seems to look good on her, I'm not sure someone shorter or wider would pull it off as well - not me anyway!

OP I find picking a few colours is a really good start so everything goes with everything else but isn't too matchy. I've gone for taupe, charcoal, navy and khaki this winter and it does help me feel a bit more pulled together.

MrsTwatInAHat · 10/01/2024 09:43

Ooh thanks Frodo. Trying not to buy clothes at the moment but if/when I do I’ll look at vinted. I mainly use it for DD’s hoodie cravings and hadn’t looked at posher things!
