Trends in spectacle frames, what's in at the moment?

My Opticians are amazing with the technical aspect of 'servicing' my eyes but their range of frames is parked in the last century.
Has anyone got any good suggestions, online or otherwise, for sharp looking frames? Even from European sites and cities. I'm hindered by a +9 prescription so rimless, super light frames never work for me. Traditionally I am guided towards smaller rectangular shapes, but I can get the lenses thinned and my opticians have acknowledged their range is rubbish and will happily source from elsewhere, if I find what I want.

Ive ordered Ray Ban and Tom Ford frames online with JP opticians and Blickers in the past - very pleased with both. I then have the lenses with my independent optician.

Did you not find the plastic frames splayed out with your prescription?

All the funky ones I'm seeing are plastic and plastic frames have always ended up with the arms splayed out and not fitting well with my -9ish prescription

Lilsoph · 05/01/2024 15:33

Sorry I should have answered your query better - I have previously had the same Ray Ban frame for a few years which was rectangle in black, navy and tortoise shell as the shape suited me. Nobody ever noticed the difference in colours. Last time I decided to go for a larger round Tom Ford frame for a change. Got lots of compliments.
I generally go with what suits me rather than the current trend. Clear seems to be fashionable but doesn't suit my colouring.
Ray Ban code is RB 5268 5583
Tom Ford code is TF 5575-B 052
If you google the codes that should bring up images of the frames.
I sent for a few pairs for comparison. You do, however, have to pay to return then. Still cheaper than same frames in Boots.
Good luck.

I prefer plastic frames as I can’t get on with the nose pieces on metal frames. I cant remember my prescription but I have varifocals and the thinest of lenses.

Floisme · 05/01/2024 15:47

Not cheap but I'm looking at Etnia Barcelona for my next pair although I've not chosen any yet. From what I can see, you can choose up to 3 frames (I think) and they'll send them to selected opticians to try free of charge, with no obligation to buy.

I've also tried on a few Rayban wire frames but they felt a bit bland and kind of disappeared into my face, whereas I'd rather have something a bit punchier.

That said. I don't normally stress too much about whether they'll suit me as I think all specs look totally weird when I first try them on and then typically by the next day I've adjusted and like them. I just avoid anything too big and chunky for my face and any colours that are too dark or too pale.

I am not sure what's "in" re spectacles but I like glasses with a bit of "character" and am currently wearing a pair from Tom Davies that I bought at my local independent optician: www.tdtomdavies.com/optical

Tom Davies | Optical Frames

greenacrylicpaint · 05/01/2024 15:53

shiny metal seems to be what's on display here.

Mum5net · 05/01/2024 15:58

Yes, splaying is a problem with prescription, and the reason I'm changing current ones, although some plastic one are pretty robust ...
Liking the JP site already...

My previous pair was from Swedish brand Oscar Magnuson (bought abroad but they have stockists in the UK) if you are drawn to "sharp" features:

@Lilsoph That's really helpful, thank you. There are several I like.
@Floisme Can't stop smiling at these, this is exactly what I wanted to explore... I'm brave enough, but my prescription will dictate.
Optician test appointment is on Monday so I intend going in with about 20 styles and asking their opinion of what would and wouldn't work.. I will have to fathom delivery and returns etc.

There’s a new independent optician opened in our village. DH thought he’d try them when he needed his eyes testing. They had some really odd “ designer glasses in a cabinet, these were the more conservative ones. Don’t know if they’re supposed to be fashionable! Think I’ll stick to Specsavers 😂

I've had several nice pairs from both Cubitts and Ace and Tate. Both are quite fashionable brands but I think they're well made too. They've lasted better than my Specsavers.

Themillandbakery · 05/01/2024 18:02

Moscot are amazing! Huge range and top quality.

Emma0For0 · 05/01/2024 18:07

Look at Firmoo- quirky stuff but not so expensive

gravitytester · 05/01/2024 18:10

@JustanotherMNSlapperTwat it's because they're minus lenses- this can be altered by filing the back of the lens bevel- I'd ask your practice's lab tech or dispensing optician to have a look!

OP, honestly, gold rimmed or clear/translucent plastic is all the rage. All shapes and sizes! (Thought for your Rx, small and round is better!).

That really made me laugh!

Mum5net · 05/01/2024 18:48

I'm taking all this info on board. There's a dog walker in the park who looks far more edgy and stylish with her new glasses and I want to join her speccy party. Hers literally are almost square, so I can't be accused of copying her, but they've made me take stock.
Absolutely loving suggestion of Cubitts and Ace & Tate as they are local enough to me.
I really want glasses that are tough because mine get industrial wear.
Will look at the others after dinner.
@gravitytester I'll start looking at round and small as well

I am equally myopic.
I have a couple pair Francis Klein frames… I love them!

Whatineed · 05/01/2024 19:02

I updated last Autumn to a pair of gold metal frame Rayban Aviator glasses and a pair of Montblanc large clear plastic frames.

I have had some very nice compliments on both.

Vermin · 05/01/2024 19:05

I have a couple of Cubitts - please NB that the Judds and similar chunky frames are REALLY heavy! Unwearably so for me annoyingly as they look great. I’m going to collect my new ace and Tate (Matt black v thin / light aviators) as soon as this pesky tube strike is over

I was watching Lupin the other day and a male character was wearing a pair like this in orange. 'Only an eccentric French man could get away with those' I thought.

Isn’t myopia a minus prescription?

OP said she was PLUS 9.

I was minus 7 in both eyes, laser surgery was best thing I ever did. 12 years of perfect distance vision and counting.

I need reading glasses now (a tame little +0.75!) and I thought I would go full on fashion for my reading glasses but I found that hardly any unusual shapes or funky colours suited me. I’ve noticed that glasses are generally BIG now though, like oversize Deirdre Barlow style again.

My prescription is -10 and I always have to have plastic frames. Metal ones seem too thin so the lenses stick out and I get too much weight on nose pads which most/all metal frames have.

Skidmarink · 05/01/2024 19:20

I meet a lot of trendy designer type people in my job. They’re wearing transparent acetate frames, chunky frames, metal aviators, bold colours and unusual shapes. The super trendy ones are wearing coloured lenses.
