Late 30s man shops or brands

Sausagerollz · 05/01/2024 13:42

This one is in good shape (outdoorsy type) and could do with some more bits for dinner/drinks/general weekend wear.

He usually raids the charity shops but there's not much about at the moment so I'd like to get him a top/shirt or two, maybe some jeans.

Looking for something that'll last for more than two washes and doesn't have any big logos on. No 'old man' clothes but nothing too silly trendy.

Any high street shops to particularly consider or brands that'll narrow things down a bit?

Thanks from someone who knows nothing about men's clothes!

Fatface would fit the bill

Sausagerollz · 05/01/2024 13:57

After getting over the haha that's where my mum would shop I've had a look and it's actually the sort of stuff that would suit him, thank you!

Haha! I know what you mean but my partner is the same age and the shirts are really nice from there, a good length and wash well too

adultsizedogbed · 05/01/2024 20:12

Have a look in next , much cheaper than fat face and they have all sorts of styles .

blueberrymojito · 05/01/2024 21:46

My DH is 39, almost 40 and would not be seen in FatFace and Next etc. He buys most of his clothes (jeans, knitwear, sweatshirts, shirts, chinos etc) from Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Zara and H&M.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 05/01/2024 22:04

According to my much older husband men's clothing and men's options are terrible compared to women and high street options for men are awful.

Everything he's bought in the last few years have been from these independent shops. I don't know if they are "old men's clothes". I don't know what that means.

Dh is 36 and the same. He buys a lot of stuff from asos too.

My stylish friend A says Colourful Standard, Arket, Uniqlo for basics, Folk for treats. I'd add Outsiders Store for beautiful practical things, maybe look at Goodhood. YMC? Not Next or Fatface.

Divebar2021 · 05/01/2024 23:33

Arket.

countdowntonap · 05/01/2024 23:33

@Sausagerollz we need more info. Where does he spend his time? E.g. football

IsItTimeToGoHome · 07/01/2024 07:25

My Husband is mid 40’s and most of his wardrobe is from Hollister.

They sell what I would class as ‘standard’ jeans, not just skinny or current fashion following. Nice plain polo tops with a small logo. Packs of plain t-shirts (again with small logo). Cargo shorts, jumpers, shirts etc.

I’m late 30’s and also find their women’s jeans fit well and they have a nice selection of clothes for me too.

Hollister also regularly have very good price reductions and if you join their members club you get money off vouchers after a certain spend limit. They also accept blue light cards if you have one for extra discount.

There’s definitely less choice for men of this age group who don’t want to follow ‘fashion’ but want to look nice.

secretrugbyfan · 07/01/2024 07:35

Charles Tyrwhitt - they have shops where you can see and try stuff on as well as online.
If he likes particular brands then you could try places like The 157 Store or Quadrophenia Alley, both have websites with extensive stock listings.
Selfridges also has online content as well as stores that stock lots of brands that again you can view and try on.

NeverStopTwinkling · 07/01/2024 07:48

My DH is 40 and looks great but in a casual, dad, works from home, likes making spreadsheets and going out on his bike/paddleboard type way. Jeans, t-shirts, checked shirts, knitwear.

He does like Fat Face, Next, Brakeburn. He has some attachment Abercrombie and Fitch as a hangover from his youth. TK maxx would have a great selection for him as they have all different brands and styles.

Edit: for research just had a look at some of the other brands mentioned, they are plain coloured oversized things. Cos equivalent to my eye. Not my DHs cup of tea but I can see that some people might like them.

Step away from FatFace, Next etc! So many good independent and specialist shops for men if you look outside the high street. It really depends on his style but to give some ideas some shops linked below.

My DH gets jumpers, tees etc from Sunspel: https://www.sunspel.com/
Jeans from places like Nudie: https://www.nudiejeans.com/
Shoes/boots from Grenson: https://www.grenson.com/?setCurrencyId=1 or DMs or similar.
He likes Walker Slater that PP mentioned for smart clothes.
He would also look at independent shops for a range of other brands, like Meet Bernard: https://www.meetbernard.com/collections/mens-knitwear-sweats.

Rapanui and Patagonia are favourites with my brother - who fits the description.

I'm sure they're lovely but the prices in the shops you have linked are absolute insanity. My DH wouldn't spend the cost of one sunspel t-shirt in a year.

Freesiabritney · 07/01/2024 08:22

DH is the same description but does wear "branded" eg Carharrt, Levis, Wrangler, Barbour, North Face, Berghaus.

puncheur · 07/01/2024 08:27

Hebtroco or Hiut for jeans.

witmum · 07/01/2024 08:32

Crew Clothing is a favourite for the 35 plus around here. Great quality and good reductions.

NancyJoan · 07/01/2024 08:34

Uniqlo are great for basics. Good shirts, knitwear, jeans, jackets.

runsmidgeOMG · 07/01/2024 08:44

DP likes superdry for hoodies. His mum got him a nice next thick knitware jumper for Christmas which he says is really comfy. His T-shirts generally come from sports direct, block colour but airy. He’s also got some bits from go outdoors - he’s 36 :)

overmydeadbody · 07/01/2024 08:50

My DH wears Patagonia, breakburn, passenger and fat face. Throw in John Lewis Staples and h&m and Zara too.

Everyone around here wears a lot of passenger clothing. My personal experience is that it isn't the best quality, but it's fairly affordable.

I know, they’re not cheap @NeverStopTwinkling although they do have great sales. I also buy stuff from Sunspel and it lasts for ages and I have several pairs of Grenson boots which still look amazing after plenty of wear.

DH has some really beautiful clothes and he mostly buys natural materials which last ages. Shops like Nudie focus on ethics and sustainability as well, which is part of why they are higher prices. He also likes shopping, style and enjoys clothes, and we have a good amount we can spend on clothes.

I guess everyone has a different budget and interest in clothes, different priorities as well as different styles so good to see a range of suggestions. OP didn’t set a budget in her post, and I personally always like to find out about different brands on these sort of threads - even if they’re expensive I might keep an eye on sales or second hand etc.

They have a very good online shop (and one actual shop).
