Shampoo and conditioner recommendations

I'm on a mission for better hair and looking for recs for shampoo and conditioner. Feel overwhelmed by the number of products on offer and would love it if anyone knew what to go for:

  • shoulder length hair
  • needs daily washing as greasy on day 2
  • oily on top, dry at ends like straw, very frizzy (could be as so much breakage)
  • lots of breakage (have booked in regular trims)
  • hard water area
  • no more than £20 each and ideally a lot less
  • love smells like Aveda rosemary and mint but found the actual product meh

I've asked my hairdresser too but assume she will recommend the salon products

I'm a recent Olaplex convert, my hair is lovely and shiny since using it and it smells lovely.

My favourite shampoo and conditioner is Davines. The Melu conditioner is v luxurious.

Would you consider alternatives to washing everyday? Maybe using dry shampoo/ talc on the roots on the second day might be a good option in the long term as it could save some damage on the dry ends.

Also I really really recommend a Dyson Airwrap for dry hair but unfortunately they cost a small fortune.

Rebootnecessary · 05/01/2024 07:49

My hair is similar and I really like the Pureology shampoo and conditioner in the purple bottle . it’s quite often on offer via Amazon or LookFantastic

Do NOT get Living Proof. It's crap and overpriced.

Even if it were cheap it would still be so crap I'd say don't get it b

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 05/01/2024 08:04

No recommendations but watching with interest. I find the cheap supermarket stuff as good as the £8 a bottle brands but I'm hoping someone here can recommend a better option! (I

My hair is the same as everything you posted, but please do not use Olaplaex. It absolutely ruined my hair, it became straw and started falling out. Noticeably thinner after only 2 months of using it

It's taken me a year to get it back to a reasonable state

I have been using Tigi Catwalk Oat & Honey shampoo and it leaves my hair so silky and a great condition. It's what my hairdresser uses so I took her advice

Actually, I ran out of my Pureology shampoo and conditioner before Christmas and was using dh's Body Shop ginger shampoo, that was good too.

Floofydawg · 05/01/2024 08:47

How does Olaplex ruin your hair?

PauseMenopause · 05/01/2024 08:49

I’m looking for the same, OP. Another non-recommendation is Coco & Eve; embarrassingly, I fell for the social media hype and bought it at spendy full-price. I quite like Living Proof, though. Couple of tips: someone who worked in hair science (there is such a job, apparently) told me cheap supermarket conditioner is just as good - how you treat your hair is more important (minimal styling, gentle washing etc). Also I’ve got the YUKA app which scans products for potential hazardous ingredients, and recommends alternatives.

Mirrormeback · 05/01/2024 08:51

My hair is the same as yours but longer and bleached

I'm happy using Garnier foods shampoo and conditioner

I bought Aveda Shampure and the conditioner which I use every now and then

I wash my hair in the evenings because I have to get up very early

I don't use dry shampoo but DD loves using it

On days I don't wash my hair I'll plait it or tie it back

I have the Aveda repair leave in stuff that it is brilliant but I don't use it daily

I don't blow my hair because it dries very quickly

Mirrormeback · 05/01/2024 08:53

On BBC sounds is a podcast called Sliced Bread and he had an episode on Shampoo and conditioner talking to experts

It's well worth a listen. Shampoo is just shampoo and not much difference between them

How does Olaplex ruin your hair?

@Floofydawg

It doesn't ruin everyone's hair but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence ( myself included) and a few forums running about people using Olaplex and having the same issues as me. Also a court case pending

It's a bond treatment which as I understand treats the 'inside' of the hair as oppose to the outside that most treatments or shampoos do. In my case it absolutely fried my hair and made it so dry it was snapping off half way down. I did some research and found a lot of the same symptoms were happening to others who has used Olaplex

I stopped and my hair has gradually got better.

It's a permanent bond treatment which can't be washed out.

Floofydawg · 05/01/2024 11:04

@piemania thanks for the info. I don't use it every day, don't know if that makes a difference. My daughter is big into hair care and swears by it.

MRSMTO · 05/01/2024 11:19

I've tried every shampoo & conditioner known to man in an experiment to find the best!! Ha! Seriously, I spend a fortune on the stuff - it's my hobby! Olaplex worked for about a month and then did more damage than benefit! However, my most recent favourite is L'Oréal Professional Pro-Longer! I love the stuff! I also do Philip Kingsley Vitamen C jelly once a week and Philip Kingsley Extreme Elastisizer once a week. I use colour Wow spray to blow dry once a week and the rest of the time Redken Frizz Resit blow dry cream!

Floofydawg · 05/01/2024 11:57

My other go-to as good old Paul Mitchell. Shampoo One and the leave-in conditioner. Buy in big bottles and it works out cheaper.

eyespartyparty · 05/01/2024 12:15

The L'occitane repair shampoo has been really great for my hair. I don't rate their conditioner but as I also have greasy hair, I often don't use it and just put a bit of leave in conditioner on the ends before I blow dry. It's been loads less frizzy since I started using it.

eyespartyparty · 05/01/2024 12:15

Meant to add, doesn't smell amazing however, not unpleasant but just a bit meh.

StarlightLady · 05/01/2024 12:38

Different brands have different qualities, so l would suggest change brands regularly. Shampoo is only on your head momentarily and then is washed out, so the difference is minimal anyway. Conditioner on the other hand is specifically designed to remain in the hair after rinsing.

I'm a recent Olaplex convert, my hair is lovely and shiny since using it and it smells lovely.

Just be aware there is a class action against olaplex for causing hair loss!

PossumintheHouse · 05/01/2024 12:45

Olaplex shampoo and conditioner is good - but do not use it every day! I use it once per week and then use good old Tresemme for my other hair wash (I generally do two washes per week - any more and I get greasy far too quickly). I’ve found that has worked well for my hair, which is quite fine and prone to tangling.

Floofydawg · 05/01/2024 12:45

@Nevermindtheteacaps haven't they removed the harmful ingredient since then, though?

App13 · 05/01/2024 12:49

Oribe is the holy Grail of hair products, and oribe shampoos sit amongst the best out there.

I've never used conditioner, but I had silky smooth glossy hair after trying a sample.. since then I'm a convert

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 05/01/2024 13:27

I really love Kitsch shampoo and conditioner bars. I have wavy, frizzy hair and it took away all the frizz. Their stuff is also paraben and sulphite free etc but smells lovely.

SpamIAm · 05/01/2024 13:32

I think it's very personal what works best for you really. If your ends are dry a bit of oil through them after washing might help?
