In what way are jeggings inferior to jeans?

I generally get numerous years worth of use out of my jeans and recently been starting to think about buying a new pair. Besides the issue of length being so variable between different styles, I was struggling to get into any pair of my normal size. As I'm hoping I might be able to shed a little weight before long, went into Next determined to find a pair. Ended up in some leggings. Sent pics to both daughters ( 21 and 28 if it;s significant) and both say no, I should avoid leggings and neither can explain the issue.

If I wear tops that at least cover most of my bum or even some down to hip length, what is the difference in appearance between jeans and jeggings?

Many thanks.

Generally jeggings can have weird fit around the waist as they have to stretch over your hips, so can look more bulky there compared to jeans. They tend not to have belt loops (because elastic!) which annoy me. They are also generally a bit thinner, higher stretch denim, so will usually only be skinny fit.

LolaSmiles · 03/01/2024 14:12

Most jeggings tend to be thinner material, not as forgiving as jeans (even ones with stretch in them), have an elasticated waist that sits weird under some tops. Being thinner material most seem to be less flattering as they lose their shape in my opinion unless they're ones that remain in great condition after washing.

Personal preference here but I find that the jeggings with bum length top/long tops can easily look quite dated because it was such a popular look for a period of time.

Thanks very much @LolaSmiles and @kittykarate

Yes I see what you mean. The material is indeed a bit thinner than normal jeans and perhaps more of a skinny fit as you say.

I don't think I've ever kept a pair of jeggings before- only tried on and taken back so I have no idea how they compare in terms of longevity and if they keep their shape. I can't decide. Maybe I'll pop into M&S as people do rave about M&S jeans. Many thanks :)

Pockets. Lack of.

Jeggings show every lump.

Belt loops. Lack of. I have no arse to keep my jeans up so need a belt.

Try spanxs jeanish jeggings. Thick like jeans, comfy waist, shape wear!

I have these they are amazing, lift your bum, shape your thighs flatten your tummy. Really thick material

RosyappleA · 05/01/2024 02:25

Jeggings do that thing where from the back under your bum they form several creases. A thick pair of jeans won’t do this. If they are thick this is less likely.

I have Heard good things about Uniqlo jeggjngs?

Passingthethyme · 05/01/2024 04:12

I prefer jeggings if they are good quality! Jeans seem so uncomfortable now

MadameSapphire · 05/01/2024 08:40

@Ferretbitme and @Doggymummar, how does the sizing of the Spanx leggings come up, please? Very interested in getting some! (Sorry to crash your thread, OP - hope this is useful info for you too!)

Ferretbitme · 05/01/2024 09:03

I got mine on vinted, I’m a pear shaped 12 and the medium felt tight to start with but now fine. I originally had large but they went baggy on the tummy which seemed to defy the point!

PosyPrettyToes · 05/01/2024 09:10

asda jeggings are made of thick denim material, so might be worth a go. They're better on an hourglass shape though as the waist is quite narrow compared to the legs and bum.

rockstarshoes · 05/01/2024 10:07

I do tend to wear jeggings since the menopause, if I buy to fit my waist they are too big everywhere else but I hate the fact that they never look like proper denim!

Black ones great but I have yet to find some that actually look like jeans!

TheOGCCL · 05/01/2024 14:33

If you’re wearing tops that cover the bum and crotch, the difference between skinny jeans, jeggings and leggings is more subtle.

I prefer to have pockets on the sides and back and something to distract from any hint of camel toe.

Jeggings/leggings are even more figure hugging and emphasise the difference between skinny legs and a larger top even more. I only really like jeggings with a tunic and knee high boots, horse rider style.

I have some black fleece lined jeggings from Next (they are called jersey leggings but they are very stretchy denim not jersey). Due to the fleece lining they are nice and thick, cosy and extremely comfortable. Very stretchy so I can move in them and don't fit tightly around my waist. They do have belt loops and I initially wore with a belt but I've found I don't need it - unusual as previous experience with jeggings is them falling down. I wear with what I would call a normal length top, which for me is down to the bum/crotch but not tunic length.

They are my current favourite item of clothing .

Ooh timely I just tried on some jeggings today (usually wear jeans) and was unconvinced.

CONS - thinner material, less forgiving over lumps and bumps (can make legs look well sausagey). Too tight round the calves, could only really be worn with boots over the top to disguise this.

PROS - no lumps where the zip and button on jeans would be. This is a BIG pro, especially if your tummy sticks out and your top sits unflatteringly on the zip bump. Also nice and elastic round the waist - I hate jeans waistbands that cut in when you sit down.

SOLUTION - manufacturers please make a hybrid that has a jeggings waist with no lumps and bumps, and normal jeans from the bum down. This should be easily achievable since most jeans have a lot of elastic in them these days anyway. Thanks!

Precipice · 05/01/2024 16:37

The 'no' is that usually they are very revealing and skin-hugging. Those leggings or very think gym bottoms that you see sometimes, where the buttocks are defined and clearly separated, but in denim. It looks awful regardless of how your bum looks, because it shouldn't be on show in such detail in the first place.

UsingChangeofName · 05/01/2024 16:56

In your title you've put jeggings
In your OP you've put ;eggings.

Which are we talking about? As there is a world of difference.

I wear jeggings instead of jeans a lot of the time as they just feel so much more comfy to me, but still look like jeans to the outside world - just more elasticity in the denim.
Legging OTOH are usually far thinner material and don't do us larger ladies any favours on the whole.

MaidOfSteel · 05/01/2024 16:57

I have a pair of bootcut jeggings and, because I tend to wear longs which don't cling around my tummy area, I think it's difficult to tell they aren't jeans.

Ooh where can you get bootcut jeggings?

Thatswhy11 · 06/01/2024 10:36

I think if you are on the larger size and you buy a GOOD quality pair of leggings it can look better than jeans with a nice top. I'm bottom heavy and have a big bum... jeans are nice but I can see the struggle if you are bigger to find jeans comfortable and I'm a size 12/14 in jeans.

Take no notice of your DDs!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/01/2024 11:03

I’ve only ever tried M&S black jeggings but can see the issues with them. Just ordered M&S Autograph jeggings from EBay as M&S have discontinued this.

MaidOfSteel · 06/01/2024 13:30

Cotton Traders! They were about £30, I think, and they do a few different shades and leg lengths.
