Dyson air wrap - disappointing

ARichSeamToMine · 29/12/2023 14:22

Ladies, please tell me if I am doing this wrong....treated myself to it as it's returnable.

What I'm finding is

  • the automatic curl wrap only works if your hair is really wet. I have thick hair and like to dry it naturally before going to a dryer.
  • I only found out after buying it, that the anti static thing should only be used if you are drying it straight. That's disappointing. I tried it and it does indeed knock the curls out.
  • The curl barrel does get hotter than I expected.
  • The other attachments don't do much more than a Babyliss dryer.

In general, I can see it being useful if you often dry your hair in a hurry, but otherwise, no. It is very very powerful as a dryer.

Am I missing any good tips?

Rather wish I hadn't bothered, now it's a case of booking all day at home for them to collect it.

@ARichSeamToMine If you are unhappy then get them to collect it and get the refund. I actually think their refund policy is great.

But your first point is incorrect. The hair needs to be almost completely dry to use the curling barrels. Even Dyson's instruction video shows them drying the hair. I do this then add product so the curls will hold.

The system works for some people but not others it depends on your hair type and texture and your level of skill when drying or styling your hair with other appliances.

ARichSeamToMine · 29/12/2023 15:05

Thanks @hedjahiding

They've been sending videos and said to make sure it's wet! They show spraying dry hair with water spray.

But thanks to you, I've just tested it on bone dry hair....it does indeed grab the hair like it's wet!

But grabs it much better than when it was partially dry...How strange.

Perhaps I was expecting it to be easier, I usually just put velcro rollers in my hair.

I did get compliments on my hair on Christmas Day so it has done something, but whether or not it's worth the money, I'm not sure.

If it can be restyled from dry and go another day without a wash, I'd love that.

I will give it more time and experimentation but I was hoping it would be quicker and less faff than curlers.

i find mine pretty rubbish too. Expensive mistake as I didn’t buy direct from
Dyson!

Oh dear
Did you get lots of practise?

it dries fantastically fast, that is impressive. But I wonder if that drying power will damage my hair.

i have been rushing about like a blue arsed fly, so tomorrow I will sit at a big table with the dryer, the manual and a big mirror.

my main disappointment is the anti static thing. None of the publicity says that only works on straight, and I find hair oil is quicker for that anyway.

Try parlux for a super fast hair drier

Torchdino · 29/12/2023 15:54

They are good for very few hair types, but I also found them hugely disappointing, as did all of my friends who bought one! If you want to commit time and effort to finding what works for you then worth keeping hold of and trying, but fat better, easier to use and quicker hair tools out there for much cheaper!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 29/12/2023 15:56

Love mine but it does take practice and you need to section your hair properly

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 29/12/2023 15:57

And it’s damp hair rather than wet, so a rough dry and then a style.

Somepeoplearesnippy · 29/12/2023 16:18

I've bought one twice and they do nothing for me. Curls and waves looked fab for 20 minutes and then dropped out. The first one I kept too long to return so sold it on EBay for nearly as much as I paid for it.

A year later I decided I hadn't tried hard enough so bought a second one. This time I went to the Dyson showroom in Oxford St. It has a small blow-dry studio upstairs and I had a blowdry (free) from one of their hairdressers to show me how to get the best results. It looked beautiful and this time the waves lasted about an hour before they went flat. That one I was able to return for a full refund.

OTOH my adult daughter has very similar hair to mine, straight and fine and she gets amazing, long lasting results from the Airwrap.

hedjahiding · 29/12/2023 17:04

@Somepeoplearesnippy @ARichSeamToMine to make my curls hold I use a texturising spray so the strands of hair don't just slide against each other and I use one of those heat activated styling sprays that they use for those hairdressing competitions. Mine is L'oreal. That is the way to get the curls to hold on my hair. I went through mousse and other products before settling on the above and they work for me. The texturising spray adds volume to my hair too.

I have a Parlux professional hair dryer and it is amazing but it is high heat, the Dyson is lower heat. If I want curls to last two days I do use a curling wand. I go between the two, wand and the Dyson so as not to damage my hair as much.

I find curling with the Dyson easier as I am only using one hand and it is just bent at the elbow not over my head. Plus I am not holding a 180 degree metal wand a few inches from my head which always worries me with the wand. Practise is good, getting the right products for your hair is essential to make it work. But, it might not be the best thing since sliced bread for you.

ARichSeamToMine · 29/12/2023 17:59

@Somepeoplearesnippy oh man, that is annoying.

@hedjahiding I've never tried a hot curling rod, I would just do damage with it!

My hair holds a style well, no issues there.

I will definitely try again but at the moment it seems like curlers and Babyliss big hair are similar, but this is much more drying on the hair and today it left it frizzy.

I just looked at photos from Christmas Day and it looks good but it took longer than curlers. Even if I get the time cut down, I suppose I'll be wondering if it's worth that amount of money.

Back to the grindstone on 2nd January so should really decide before then, lots of practise tomorrow. I'd like recreate my Christmas Day look for NYE but that might have been a fluke!

Found this...interesting to read the experience of others...

so my theory about a sweet spot in the dampness of the hair is experienced by others.

@ARichSeamToMine "I've never tried a hot curling rod, I would just do damage with it!"

I got my hairdresser who knows my hair to teach me how to do it, how long to keep the heat on for etc. I have seen way too many youtube videos of people burning their hair off.

baubletits · 29/12/2023 19:04

@hedjahiding what texturizing spray and styling spray do you use please? 🙂

Isabelle70 · 29/12/2023 20:58

I got one from QVC that I could have returned but thought I would get the hang of the Airwrap. I didn't but I did manage to sell it on with only a £40 lost so not so bad.

Tronkmanton · 29/12/2023 21:07

@hedjahiding do you put the texturising spray on damp hair, style it with the airwrap then spray with styling spray? Sorry hair styling idiot here 😀

hedjahiding · 30/12/2023 12:22

@Tronkmanton I use heat protection spray on my wet hair and blow dry it. I then I use the texurising spray on my dry hair, it will make it a bit like when you have hair spray in your hair, I t hen I use the heat styling spray immediately afterwards. This dampens my hair but I also use a water spray to ever so slightly dampen my hair if it feels like it is bone dry.

I just watched a lot of youtube videos on people styling their hair to work out what worked for my hair. The person who I found helped me do my hair was Fleur so here is her video from the point where she does her hair, this is how I do mine, I don't section it.

I have a Dyson hairdryer that I love. I really wanted to love the Airwrap but I didn’t get on with it at all apart from the straightening brush. The curling wands wrecked my hair for months afterwards. I returned it.

PieAndLattes · 01/01/2024 02:10

The Dyson Hairwap curl is a ‘look’. You can spot people with it a mile off.

hsar200 · 01/01/2024 02:16

So just to double check, as I was thinking of buying it, if I buy it directly from dyson and it doesn't work for me, is it ok to return with no issues?

ARichSeamToMine · 01/01/2024 15:38

Hi all

Happy New Year!

Yes @hsar200 they say they'll collect it for free. I got mine before Christmas a d the return date is 31st January.

I've tried again, twice, with it and I like it better.

@PieAndLattes It's interesting because I don't feel I have achieved that really groomed "look" and I would like to. I'm not going for tight curls though, is that what you mean? Or is it maybe that much younger women have that shampoo commercial look, which is unlikely to happen in my hair in middle age.

It's keeping lots of body even after being slept on which is great. I also had to jam my hat on pretty firmly last night and it's still bouncy hair.

I think it will be the case that I can get my hair done quicker than with rollers so now looking possible I will keep it.

@IloveJudgeJudy I am worried about heat damage so I'm wondering how long and how often you used it?

I used to swim nearly every day. I used elasticizer in that stage and it was okay. It wasn't being dried with such a powerful dryer though.

Hi, ARichSeamtoMine, I only used it a couple/ few times before returning it.

If Dyson brought out a straightening/smoothing brush from the Airwrap, I’d definitely buy it. As I said, I love my hairdryer. It does wonders for my hair.

There is a very strong straightening/smoothing brush in this, it knocks my hair pancake flat!

If the curling barrel damaged your hair quickly, I guess I will know before I have to make a decision. That seems really fast to do damage though?

IloveJudgeJudy · 01/01/2024 19:40

Yes, it was. I was very surprised/disappointed. It took a long time (months) for my hair to recover.
