'Glow Up'/ "Princessing" 2024 Thread 1

Chaiselongueallday · 28/12/2023 17:24

I've had some success with these in the past. Have realised that over the years I've picked little habits from these that I've been able to sustain so I thought ahead of the new year I would start a thread for 2024...anyone else want to join me?
I'm 46 this year and want to focus on being healthy, happy with my style and attuned to my body and skin. I don't want to waste time worrying about not being good enough. I am including a bit of health and fitness on my list as I feel better in my clothes when I'm toned and generally healthy in body and mind. I'll be doing yoga, walking and mad living room dancing. I'll not be bothering with foundation (unless a very special occasion) this year fed up of wearing a mask..so looking after my skin will be important. I won't be spending on fast fashion ...I've done quite well on this in the past, inspired by this board and capsule wardrobe threads.

I'll think about a more detailed list and post it later.

I've copied some useful info from a previous 'Princessing thread' below for anyone that fancies it and needs inspiration.

*The term "Princessing" was invented back in 2011 by a poster called Blackswan. It was the year of the royal wedding and she proposed that every year you should get ready for a wedding you were attending as if it were your own.

I took that idea and ran with it!

The general idea behind that original thread and all the "Princessing" "Grooming" "Operation Revnovation" threads since has been to make small sustainable changes that help make you feel better. To make this measurable, most people finds it helps to make a list - not too long, no more than 20 items really of the changes you want to make. The original thread had one general list but as no two people have the same priorities I think it's better for everyone to have their own individual list. To anyone in need of inspiration the original list was:

  1. 8 glasses of water a day
  1. Exfoliating
  2. Using some kind of teeth whitener
  3. Using some kind of regenerative face cream
  4. Intensive nail care (feet and hands)
  5. Some kind of eyelash growth serum
  6. The Shred / other intensive exercise
  7. At least 2 extra fruit & veg
  8. Healthy breakfast daily.
10. Hair oil (moroccan hair oil for eg, or kerastase etc) 11. No alcohol during the week 12. Daily vitamins 13. Body brushing 14. At least 2 servings of salmon or other fatty fish per week. 15. One early night once a week. Suggest 9PM. 16. Regular hair removal 17. Give up one naughty favourite item e.g. chocolate/crisps 18. No more fizzy drinks 19. DAILY body moisturising. 20. Warm water with lemon first thing in the a.m.

You don't have to post your list but I would recommend you write it down somewhere for yourself.

Original Princessing thread*

I have a theory that every year you should treat one wedding you're attending as though it were your own. Not that you're the bride, or as import...

Vitamins daily
Run 3 x week
Yoga once a week
Nice face/eye cream every day

LondonQueen · 28/12/2023 17:56

I'll join! I'm usually quite stylish but over the past week have become rather drab and need some motivation for January!

Gowlett · 28/12/2023 18:00

This all sounds brilliant. I have loads of nice cosmetics / skin stuff that I’ve not been arsed with (baby is now a toddler). This year, I was hit big-time by a runaway peri-menopause train (am 47) so I really want to feel a whole better in 2024.

Place Marking for 8th Jan - letting myself go off the rails until then 😂

Farmageddon · 28/12/2023 19:09

Oooh, I love these threads. Mine are:

Daily meditations - I have recently started listening to a morning and nighttime meditation, when I wake up and before I go to sleep. So I want to keep that up for at leat 30 days, or until the end of January and see if it transforms my life :-)

Body Brushing - Would love to do this once or twice a week after a shower.

Skincare - I already have a decent skincare routine, but I have an LED facemask sitting in its box that I haven't bothered with for ages, will try and use this 3-4 times a week.

I already do daily vitamins and a good breakfast, but I need to cut down on sugary shit and increase my veg intake. Once the New Year celebrations are over I will start this.

Poblano · 28/12/2023 19:11

Yes, I'm in!

I've taken part in several of these over the years and lots of the little habits have stuck. Things like a proper skincare routine, taking vitamins and regular appointments for hair, eyebrows etc. They're a great way to make small, incremental changes.

I really need to work on exercise. I used to be good, but changed jobs and now spend more time working away from home which has messed up my routine. The job is also quite stressful and I often feel too tired to exercise (even though this is exactly why I should exercise - to reduce the effects of the stress!). I used to swim 3 times a week plus do a yoga class and a pilates class every week. To be honest I'd be delighted to do half that amount on a regular basis now!

I'd also like to drop half a stone in weight, just so my clothes look a bit better. I could also do with drinking more water and probably less wine.

I'm going to split my list into a "continue" list and a "new habits" list.

Continue:
Morning and evening skincare routine, with extra treatments (mask etc) twice a week.
Hair cut and colour every 6 weeks
Eyebrow shape every 8 weeks, tint at home every 4 weeks
Choose outfits for the week ahead and iron clothes, polish shoes etc every Sunday
File and paint nails every Sunday
Take vitamins daily (multivitamin with minerals, glucosamine, evening primrose)
Body moisturise daily after shower
Hand cream at least twice a day

New/revived habits:
Drink 1.5 litres of water every day
Swim twice a week
Yoga or pilates twice a week
Alcohol only at weekends
Use MFP to calorie count with the aim of losing 0.5lb a week

Farmageddon · 28/12/2023 19:16

Oh yeah, I also need to get back into exercise, but quite honestly I'm in hibernation mode these days so it's not going to happen any time soon.

Come the Spring I will start up Pilates classes again 2/3 times a week after work. I also walk to work a few times a week if it's not pissing rain, so usually 40 minutes each way which helps.

Which essential oils do you use for your face please?

Oooo I fancy one of those masks! Which one do you have? And do you think it helps?

I always thought dry body brushing was to be done just before the shower so dead skin cells can be washed away 🤔 it's funny how we assume we do it the same

Ooo how did you work out your seasonal makeup?

I got an online analysis by Emily Inness/Style Me Happy £35. You can also use the following two sites to get a decent guesstimate-

https://colorwise.me/

https://www.vivaldicolor.com/

its not perfectly accurate compared to
irl drapes but it is much cheaper. All 3 agree I am a summer so feel reasonably confident in that, Emily says a soft/muted summer and the apps vary depending on what pic I use

I dont use essential oils on my face sorry ...for body I have a couple of nice massage/moisturising oils I use that are a lovely treat to use and help mask the smell of my lactic acid moisturiser (Ameliorate)

this one from Aesop

this one from Neals Yard

I've heard rosehip might be good for faces!

Oh so happy to see this! I really need to finally spend this year getting myself healthier and happier. Main goals are -

  1. Weight loss (have about 6 stone to loose 🫣)
  2. Up my water intake/vitamins
  3. Rediscover my own style
  4. Regular exercise
  5. Cut toxic/negative people out
  6. Have huge imposter syndrome so really need to work on my self esteem

Seem to have had these goals for so long but never achieve them 😥. Hoping posting here that I'll get some good ideas and a bit of accountability 🤞

I have the CurrentBody one, which is pretty good - but quite expensive. I got it on sale so keep an eye on their website because they do sales throughout the year. I saw good results when I used it consistently, but then I got out of the habit of it.

I believe Omnilux and The Light Salon are good brands as well, as is Dr Dennis Gross. You need one that has the correct wavelength of light for Red and Near Infra Red.

Distantrainbow · 28/12/2023 20:37

Love this thread. Here is my list, some of which I am already doing and some that I have done in the past and need to get back on track with;

Increase water intake
Daily dry body brushing prior to shower
Body moisturise daily
Daily supplements – collagen and ashwagandha
Daily positive affirmations
Daily exercise (30-60 minutes)
Outside daily walk
Twice a week Pilates
Weekly hair/face mask
Healthy breakfast
Hand cream every evening
Use of jade Gua Sha massage stone with Age Defy cell enrich facial oil every evening
Drink home-made ginger, lemon and cinnamon tea
Weekly fresh fish for dinner (sea bass is my favourite)

I will also take a look at the Salux wash cloth, as for the price is definitely worth a go.
