Moisturiser recommendation

Sandybeachbums · 23/12/2023 17:37

43, skin has changed over the past 12/18 months and become a lot drier.
I need a good, rich moisturising cream that will get rid of the tightness on my face.
I've tried lots of different creams over the past few months and once they dry, I feel an uncomfortable tightness in my skin.
I've tried M&S Apothcary, L'Oreal with Hyularonic Acid, Garnier even Lacura Caviar but all give the same result. Now got loads of half used tubs in the bathroom.
As a last ditch I've been using Superdrug's version of E45 for very dry skin but my skin still feels tight! Aargh!

I Don't drink or smoke, drink plenty of water and eat a good varied diet.

Any recommendations?

@pinkpedi and @gocompare I like the sound of the blue Nivea! What face cleanser do you use with it?

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 24/12/2023 09:08

After years of searching and wasting I have finally found Caudalie moisturising sorbet. Its the first time ive ever finished a tube and bought another one. I cant tell its on. Doesn’t pile under makeup. I can wear day and night.

Simonjt · 24/12/2023 09:13

What is your entire skin routine?

If you’re using a cleanser the damages the skin barrier, or if you’re not using a moisturising serum then slapping a moisturiser on won’t help really.

ofestivetree · 24/12/2023 09:14

Elemis marine cream or chartlotte tilbury magic cream

buckleten · 24/12/2023 09:17

Boots no.7 protect and perfect is excellent, and I am going to try the future renew one after Christmas too as I have heard that it is also good. A few times a week I use an ayurveda face oil and find it lovely, not greasy as I feared. My skin is looking great and I'm early 50's..

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 24/12/2023 09:38

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. Absolutely lovely. It’s spendy, so I pick it up on QVC or in one of their Christmas gift sets.

Clinique moisture surge is also good and less expensive than Elemis.

aSpanielintheworks · 24/12/2023 09:46

Clinique Dramatically Different moisturising lotion.
I've used it for years, it's light, unscented, non greasy and makes your skin instantly comfortable.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 24/12/2023 09:50

Try "slugging" at night - a light moisturiser after cleansing and then a layer of vaseline. You'll wake up glowing.

I second the recommendation for Nivea in the blue tub.

I have used many expensive moisturisers and other skin care products. Now I stick with simple things that work. Moisturiser is a simple product and you just need to find one that has the right consistency, smell, and price for you.

I like to mix a few drops of rosewater with a drop of glycerine in the palm of my hand and rub it in as a toner. I will add any active ingredient serums I use (like an AHA or my tretinoin) and then I top with a rich moisturiser. There's one by Simple that's very good. Or Nivea. An occlusive layer at night - vaseline or aquaphor or similar - really has improved the overall condition of my skin.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 24/12/2023 09:51

Cerave, effective and reasonably priced, beloved of dermatologists. No fragrance, avoid fragrance it’s a known irritant. They have a huge range from tubes to pump packs. I use the moisturising lotion in a pump pack.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 24/12/2023 09:54

I agree with the above about the right cleanser. I like cleansing balms (Clinique Take the Day Off is fantastic but I have found cheaper dupes/similar.) Hot cloth cleanser is great - the Aldi dupe is worth stocking up on. Double cleanse. I wear a lot of slap so I start with makeup remover, then I use a cleansing balm and I massage it in really well. I do that twice.

Sandybeachbums · 24/12/2023 14:43

Thanks all!
So many great suggestions. Love the look of the Temple Spa range in particular.

Will also look at my cleansing routine as I think that's probably exacerbating things - I currently use soap Blush

Obagi hydrate lux at night
And obagi hydrate for day time

xyz111 · 24/12/2023 14:54

Have a consultation with The Ordinary. They will recommend products. They're really good.

Bert2e · 24/12/2023 15:21

Stop the soap and your skin will thank you! I had really dry skin until I started oil cleansing. Now I just use Childs Farm unscented or Simple with no problems.

@pinkpedi and @gocompare I like the sound of the blue Nivea! What face cleanser do you use with it?

I use either inkey list oat cleanser or superfacialist vit c oil, with a flannel. They're both for first cleanse and are supposed to use another cleanser after but I don't bother!

BrainInAJar · 24/12/2023 15:55

I'm 40 and have tried everything. I concluded that it's hard to beat cerave hydrating cleanser and cerave rich moisturiser.

MerryCheesemas · 24/12/2023 15:58

I’ve recently started using Nivea Soft (the dark blue one is too heavy for me). It’s rich enough to satisfy my peri meno skin and cheap! I’ve tried loads of moisturisers over the year both cheap and expensive and I can’t tell the difference

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 24/12/2023 16:19

gocompare · 23/12/2023 19:45

I still rate the old fashioned blue Nivea. I swear it's just the same as creme de la mer with a different fragrance

Apparently there's only one ingredient difference between them.

Petrarkanian · 24/12/2023 16:36

I'd highly recommend Lyonsleaf beauty balm, I've been using it for about 5 years and I don't use a moisturiser anymore, just that as cleanser.

App13 · 24/12/2023 17:00

I've stopped using expensive creams a good few years ago, turned 44 recently and still have baby skin.

I think its because I've used layering for 20 plus years , serum moisturiser oil.

Moisturiser is cerave thick tub stuff
Oil is rosehip, which is vit e and natural retinol mimicking properties.

Serum during day is chantercaille vital essence 90 pounds but I can apply on eyes too

Eye cream is kiels avocado

Thats my lot. No enlarged pores as yet and super hydrated x

Nudgethatjudge · 24/12/2023 17:07

I like some of Paula's Choice products for moisturisers and cleansers

BrainInAJar · 24/12/2023 17:08

The thing I don't like about Nivea is that it has fragrance in it.

Dr Sam Bunting says if you want fragrance, light a candle, don't put it on your skin!

Bert2e · 24/12/2023 17:38

pinkpedi · 24/12/2023 15:27

I use either inkey list oat cleanser or superfacialist vit c oil, with a flannel. They're both for first cleanse and are supposed to use another cleanser after but I don't bother!

I use Superfacialist oil too - never bother double cleansing and my skin loves it.

almondflake · 24/12/2023 18:12

Have a look at Caroline Hirons , she makes a beautiful moisturiser, it's not particularly cheap but you really can feel the difference on dry , tight skin .
