Do some people never go grey?

I am nearly 60 years of age and hardly grey at all although all my family had white hair by this age.

I have always had my hair highlighted but grew it out during lockdown as lots of my friends did. They managed to grow their hair and it blended grey/white into the blonde and it still looks lovely now and must be really easy to maintain. Mine grew out really dark but mousey so I dyed it dark and it looked awful. Now I’m mid-blonde with dark roots and it never looks nice.

Anyway I am wondering how long I will have to wait to go grey or perhaps I won’t at all!

I wouldn't consider that a problem!

TerfTalking · 23/12/2023 16:11

My mum is 87 and a redhead, hardly any grey at all. Her hair isn't as bright as it once was, but it’s still red.

SnowRoomAtTheInn · 23/12/2023 16:11

My Mum only started going grey at about 70 and at nearly 80 she’s only a bit salt & pepper-ish. Her Dad only had about a quarter of a head of grey hair when he died aged 97!

I’ve got my Dad’s genes. Been significantly grey since my late 20s. Hmph.

adriftinadenofvipers · 23/12/2023 16:12

I'm 60, no grey.

Kimmeridge · 23/12/2023 16:13

My Mum is 78 and still has a full head of dark hair. You only see a few strands of grey when you're right beside her. Looks like my brother & I have inherited her good genes because we're in our 50s and no grey

bigTillyMint · 23/12/2023 16:14

I am wondering the same! I am also nearing 60 and am still natural blonde, no grey or white hairs. Just wondering what shade I will go!

Darklane · 23/12/2023 16:15

My father in law never went grey or bald at all, died late seventies still with a full head of jet black hair, he was Irish. I was a redhead but started to go grey in my twenties & by thirty it was completely snow white, my grandmother was the same & I always hoped mine would end up the same & it did.

Littlenutroast · 23/12/2023 16:17

Oh right. I’ve never taken much notice maybe as everyone in my family went completely grey unless they dyed their hair!

My mother in law is 88 and still has very little grey. She started to get grey hairs maybe 10 years ago. My husband has inherited this gene and still has black hair in his 50s. He had maybe 20 greys on his temples.

I on the other hand, have been dealt the misfortune of Irish grey genes whereby I had greys when I was 15. I am 52 now and I’m probably at least 50% grey. Thankfully our sons don’t seem to have inherited this, yet.

caramond · 23/12/2023 16:37

My mum is turning 80 soon and only has a few greys. I'm in my 40s and have more and more each month it seems - I don't mind at all, quite like mine. My dad was pretty much grey by the time he was 60.

Evenstar · 23/12/2023 16:37

My hairdresser says I am only about 5% grey at nearly 60. My father gradually faded to blonde and my aunt on his side had no grey till she was in her 90’s. My aunt oh my mum’s side has no grey and is in her late 80’s.

My mother and brother both started going grey in their late 20’s/early 30’s, so it seems to be the luck of the draw genetically.

Idontwannabeastupidgirl1 · 23/12/2023 16:38

Oh here we go, the usual 'my nan is 107 and hasn't got a single grey hair or wrinkle. 🙄

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/12/2023 19:27

I'm 85 and am often mistaken for a 25 year old. I have no grey hairs or wrinkles yet and still have some milk teeth.

tribpot · 23/12/2023 19:29

My mum is 75 and has some strands of grey but is still predominantly brunette.

EdithStourton · 23/12/2023 19:31

My aunt, now in her 90s, has almost no grey.

Tessisme · 23/12/2023 19:40

One of my aunts is 81 and still has jet black hair with just a few strands of silver. Her brother and 3 sisters, including my mum, all went completely grey in their 50's/60's.

CorylusAgain · 23/12/2023 19:43

My Mum died at 86 and had very little grey. People assumed she dyed her hair.
Of her 3 children, 2 of us have inherited that gene and although me and my brother have different coloured hair (me red, him dark brown) neither of us have any grey (aged 62 and 57). My other brother is very grey, so he missed it.

Eh?
It's factual. Some people go grey in their twenties others don't grey until 60s 70s 80s. There's no stealth boasting it's just the luck of the genes.

LadyLapsang · 23/12/2023 19:48

In the UK we have a higher threshold before we treaty hypothyroidism than many other countries and untreated I understand it is linked to premature grey hair as well as the other symptoms.

HashtagShitShop · 23/12/2023 19:49

I started going grey at 21. Now approaching 40 and if I let it grow out I'm a good 50/50 at least.

LadyLapsang · 23/12/2023 19:49

Treat not treaty!

My 74 year old DF doesn't have any greys.

My mother, early 80s, does not appear to have any grey hair at all. Whereas one of my kids has had the odd grey hair since their mid teens & has quite a few now (early 20s).
