Do some people never go grey?

I am nearly 60 years of age and hardly grey at all although all my family had white hair by this age.

I have always had my hair highlighted but grew it out during lockdown as lots of my friends did. They managed to grow their hair and it blended grey/white into the blonde and it still looks lovely now and must be really easy to maintain. Mine grew out really dark but mousey so I dyed it dark and it looked awful. Now I’m mid-blonde with dark roots and it never looks nice.

Anyway I am wondering how long I will have to wait to go grey or perhaps I won’t at all!

My mum is 76 and only has a little grey hair, I'm 52 and just have a few grey strands.
I'd love to be a steely grey one day

patchysmum · 24/12/2023 00:12

I have brown hair and started to go grey in my thirties. My friend has red hair and no grey that I can see it has just gone a darker red ,she is 67

DramaAlpaca · 24/12/2023 00:24

I'm 59 and still my natural dark blonde. No greys yet. My DM is 87 and only has a few strands of grey, and her DM was the same.

OrchardApples · 24/12/2023 00:31

My grandmother has a full head of dark hair at 72. Only a few greys at top which she pulls out maybe a couple. She’s never dyed her hair at all since she was 16 years old! :)

OrchardApples · 24/12/2023 00:32

However though, DP’s family grey early! His parents both have white hair and he’s started to get grey at the sides. His cousin is in her 30’s and she has grey hair and has to dye it regularly

GodspeedJune · 24/12/2023 00:32

My paternal Nan has no greys at 88! My dad is 66 and only has a tiny smattering around his temples. I’m early 30s with none yet, hoping to take after my Dads side of the family with that particular gene!

Needhelpsupport · 24/12/2023 00:39

Good for you..I am 60 and have blond hair ,the grey hairs blend in really well.

starsinthenightskies · 24/12/2023 07:41

My mum is in her 70s and still only has a few strands of grey. But all of her friends of the same age went grey 20+ years ago. So it’s unusual but not impossible!

Fraaahnces · 24/12/2023 07:43

I’m blonde and no visible greys in my mid-50’s. I think it will fade to beige rather than go grey anyway.

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 24/12/2023 07:45

My gran is 90 and only has a few grey hairs. My 60 year old mum has more, but not many. Neither would ever bother to dye their hair so it's definitely natural.
My other gran was grey at about 40, and I think I'm heading more her direction!

MintJulia · 24/12/2023 07:48

My db is 68 & still dark brown, as am I at 60. Our dm was completely white in her forties. I put it down to lucky genes.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/12/2023 07:48

I think it's genetic, so it's hardly bragging 🙄 My late Mum, who had very dark brown hair when young, started to go grey early. I'm not sure about my father. According to my hairdresser, I have 5% grey. I'm nearly 60. It is what it is 🤷‍♀️ I have my hair dyed to a more interesting colour anyway!

Idontwannabeastupidgirl1 · 23/12/2023 16:38

Oh here we go, the usual 'my nan is 107 and hasn't got a single grey hair or wrinkle. 🙄

No one ages without wrinkles, but some people do not go grey. The two are not the same.

My mother died at 81 and had no grey.

bigTillyMint · 24/12/2023 16:00

I’m hoping I follow that pattern @SnapBang - I wouldn’t mind going white as my hair was almost white as a small child!

FWIW my dad went jet black from white blond as a child (I’m sure it was said to be after a bad shock) and then salt and pepper to grey. My mum was mouses brown and faded to pale grey.

NekonoTe · 24/12/2023 16:12

My grandparents died in their seventies with only a handful of white hairs each. Granddad also had very few wrinkles but grandma had many. Def possible.

FionaJT · 24/12/2023 16:35

I'm 50 and red haired, I've been fading from my natural dark auburn over the last few years and have been asked on a few occasions where I got my highlights done! I've had hairdressers telling me for years that I can expect to fade to strawberry blonde rather than go grey, and that it's one of the benefits of being ginger :)

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 24/12/2023 17:03

My mum didn't. She was ginger and just faded to a wishy-washy mousey colour which she had until she died in her 80s. I'm also ginger and very much hoping I get to have white hair instead of that nondescript colour!

Trez1510 · 24/12/2023 17:28

Another one here discovering our mother was telling the truth when she denied colouring her hair. I'm 61 and have 5% grey according to my hairdresser. My brothers, all older, are 50/50 in terms who has retained colour and who has gone silver/grey. Genes fascinate me. All with the same parents and such diversity. Fascinating.

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 24/12/2023 17:59

DH is 62 and hasn't yet. I've had streaks of grey since I was about 25!

ShanghaiDiva · 24/12/2023 18:02

I have much more grey than my dm who is 82. Thanks dad!

Zooeyzo · 25/12/2023 00:26

I think its genetics. A friend of mine has no grey in her mid 40s and her mum only has a few.

Friedfriedplantain · 25/12/2023 00:39

I've had greys since my early 20s! My grandpa died in his 80s with brown hair.
