Warm rainproof coat for long cold matches

I am looking for a coat to keep me warm and dry on the Sunday morning when I am on rugby duty, which seem to be every single one of them.
I own a warm coat from Boden, now 5 years old, but the rain comes through and hubby hates it.
a blue second hand sea salt rain jacket - great for walking or in autumn, but so very cold on the pitch.
Any ideas? I am scared of the cost, but happy to go second hand
168, size 12 and chesty.

Thank you

Dryrobe.

Baircasolly · 22/12/2023 20:30

All the rugby mums round here double up a warm coat with a dry robe on top. The first few did look a bit ridiculous tbh (!) but it's totally standard now.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/12/2023 20:33

DryRobe on top of your coat of choice

idontlikealdi · 22/12/2023 23:29

Dryrobe

Bloodsugarlevels · 23/12/2023 07:06

Didriksons looks good - will save up for one of the long ones

Dryrobe - not sure I am such a fan - the double wearing has not been seen here. Not sure I have the courage to start the trend here. Will bear in mind if the Didrikson one does not do the trick

After researching the hell out of this, including on MN I recently opted for a Seasalt Janelle. In fact I think there is a thread devoted to it somewhere. I like it. I ordered a few and returned them but it looks good and is 100% waterproof.

MintJulia · 23/12/2023 07:25

You could go for a sports coat designed for winter, such as a shooting jacket (Seeland) or an American fleece lined ski jacket. Both are warm and waterproof after years of use.
A decent shooting jacket will cost £200ish but will last a decade or more. Add sheepskin gloves and heavy boots with thick wool socks and you should be toasty.

One of the outdoor brands, I think regatta or could be mountain warehouse do a coat similar to dry robe but slightly less huge looking and without the big branding. Popped over a lighter fill down puffer you'd not be the obvious dry robe doubler if you don't like the look

I've got a long Didriksons and it is totally waterproof and incredibly warm.

Mairzydotes · 23/12/2023 08:20

Can you use some of the Nikwax to waterproof your Boden coat?

Cornishmumofone · 23/12/2023 08:22

SportPursuit has had Didriksons coats this year: www.sportpursuit.com/products?bid=1741&src_search=Didriksons

Norfolkbumpkin · 23/12/2023 08:43

Didriksons all the way. I've been wearing one of their parkas for standing on freezing cold pitches for the past two years, and it's been brilliant. Warm and reliably waterproof.

Lands End do some wonderful long, waterproof, toasty warm coats. And frequent sales. I have never paid full price for a LE coat.

nowtygaffer · 23/12/2023 09:08

I have both the Seasalt Janelle and a Didriksons. I find the Didriksons very heavy. Fortunately my rugby watching days are behind me 😁

DelightfulDoris · 23/12/2023 09:11

Get to Mountain Warehouse if you have one near you. You will definitely find something there. Or Tresspass or Millets.

Portakalkedi · 23/12/2023 09:16

Lands End Squall parka

Bloodsugarlevels · 23/12/2023 10:20

I have the Seasalt Janelle, totally waterproof but not warm. So great for walks, but not Rugby watching in the depth of winter 🥶

Another Didrikson fan here. Had a number of winter coats such as North Face Artic Parker, but my Didrikson is way better. Waterproof, wind proof, pockets, thumb holes in sleeve lining to help keep my wrists warm, adjustable hood and waist. Keeps me warm and dry on the touchlines, whilst being breathable too.
Washes well and looks smart enough that to have also worn it for work when the weather has been particularly grim.

tinselvestsparklepants · 23/12/2023 11:07

My mum has a heated gillet. It's quite thin but keeps her toasty for several hours. Maybe you could put that on underneath your coat?

SoupDragon · 23/12/2023 11:09

I had a Didrikson which was great for rugby. Also, it's important to have good warm boots! I also had a set of thermal base layers as the local club was bleak with it's own miserable weather system.

Twilightstarbright · 23/12/2023 11:20

Seasalt Janelle isn’t warm enough for me.

North face artic parka is good.

My best is the sweaty Betty nimbus which looks like a sleeping bag but it warm and waterproof.

I spend Saturday and Sunday pitch side.

Bloodsugarlevels · 23/12/2023 14:13

@Cornishmumofone i ordered the warmest waterproof parka available at sports direct, thank you
