Keratin treatment?

Bananaandmarmite · 05/12/2023 22:45

My hairdresser has advised me to have a keratin treatment.
my hair is frizzy and lots of it. It’s so hard to tame. I end up straightening it or throwing it in a messy bun.

she has the treatment herself and swears by it. My only stumbling block is I’ve read things online stating it will damage my hair forever!!

what are your thoughts??

It shouldn't damage your hair, it makes my hair (which sounds like yours) better than ever.

It's a huge time saver. Can't recommend it enough.

HalleLouja · 05/12/2023 22:47

Keratin is a protein and once my hair is treated it makes it so shiny and easy to manage. I am not sure how it would damage your hair.

Ruthietuthie · 05/12/2023 22:50

I'm not sure how it would damage your hair. I have a keratin treatment and it is life-changing. I could never style my hair well, and, truthfully, I still can't, but with just a rough blow-dry it is now smooth, shiny and perfect. I LOVE it.

Oh wow! This is music to my ears!!

How often do you have the treatment?

OP posts:
Ruthietuthie · 05/12/2023 22:58

I only have mine once every twelve months or so, because in the summer I swim a lot (and chlorine or salt water breaks the treatment so it would need doing again) but, to be always looking really good, I would say every 6 months. Some people seem to do it more frequently, but my hairdresser really makes the treatment last.
It also makes your hair much quicker to dry too. It's absolutely great.

Scrambledchickens · 05/12/2023 23:00

Which treatment do you have Ruthietoothie?

Ruthietuthie · 06/12/2023 01:47

My hairdresser uses the Brazilian Blowout brand, the professional range. I then wash it at home with their shampoo (and Davines "Love" smoothing mask for conditioner) and use the Brazilian Blowout brand ionic bonding spray before I blow-dry it. I wash my hair only once a week and, even after eight months, I can still feel the keratin in my hair, although it isn't quite as straight as it was when it was first done. My hair is heavily high-lighted and frizzy texture.
It saves me so much time and means that I have styled looking hair every day, despite having zero styling skills.
(I am in the US, so don't know if this is a US brand)

Ruthietuthie · 06/12/2023 01:49

I can DM you a before and after photograph of my hair, if you like. It really is a big difference.

Guavafish1 · 06/12/2023 01:58

can you explain roughly the cost, what keratin is used and how they do it?

Bananaandmarmite · 06/12/2023 05:18

I’ve been quoted £150 to have mine done at my hairdressers.

I’d love to see before and after Ruthie

Sorry, another question.. I’ve got the keratin treatment booked and then 2 days later I’m booked for a hair colour. The hairdresser said the keratin can strip the colour I have on my hair (have it once a month to hide the greys!).
But everywhere I’ve read, it says don’t wash for 3 days??

I am in NZ (obviously) so the $110 I pay may not compare to UK prices. I have a treatment about every 5 months and I find it fantastic for getting rid of frizz and leaving a smooth and shiny finish on my low-lighted menopausal hair. I cannot wash my hair for three days after treatment so have done on a Friday morning so I can wash it before work on the Monday. I can highly recommend.

SueblueNZ · 06/12/2023 05:36

The three hairdressers I’ve used (over the years) for keratin have said there needs to be two weeks between keratin and colour. I wouldn’t be prepared to compromise the efficacy of either by having them so close together.

conhill · 06/12/2023 05:58

I have the nanokeratin treatment every 6 months. You are right it does strip colour. I think with the first keratin treatments that were available you couldn't wash your hair straight after but the nanokeratin is fine. I usually have a week between keratin and colour and have been advised to wash hair at least twice in between.

I have nanokeratin twice a year. It's amazing.

It does affect your hair colour (makes mine very reddish), so I have colour a week later.

The bit about not washing for three days only applies to a Brazilian blow dry. Not all keratin treatments are the same so check with your hairdresser. I don't have to wait three days with the Nano treatment

TeenagersAngst · 06/12/2023 06:58

£150 is a fair price, I pay that for my shoulder length hair. I'm in SE, so may be less expensive elsewhere

coffeestrongblacknosugar · 06/12/2023 07:16

I have the keratin treatment every 6 ish months. I have long, very blond (highlighted) hair which is thick, wavy and frizzy. The keratin makes my hair so much more manageable, saves me time on blow drying. My hair salon uses cocochoco keratin, but I have also had many others over the years.

Top tips - I prefer to have my colour done first and then keratin (2 weeks later) afterward. Use a salt free, sulphate free shampoo and conditioner and lastly look for before and after pics on your hairdressers socials. The difference is night and day in shine, texture, frizz and condition.

Ruthietuthie · 06/12/2023 13:09

I have color done first, as keratin does strip it, then the keratin. But all on the same day. You should move your color appointment. (Having both done involves about five hours at the hair-dressers. Thank goodness it is only once a year!). The old-style keratins (which also had formaldehyde in them!!!) meant that you couldn't wash your hair for a few days afterwards, but with the modern ones, you can.
150GBP is a good prize. I am in the US and in a very expensive city, so mine is eye-wateringly expensive (with my cut and color, I pay nearly a $1000 on the day I have it done) but, as I only do it once a year, it is worth it.
And yes, you MUST use the right sulphate-free shampoo, conditioner and products afterwards, or you will break the keratin.
I'll find some photographs later today and DM you.

Would i be a fool to try a home one? On SMP and very fluffy of hair so keen to try this!

Littleredcorvettepurplerain · 06/12/2023 14:58

You can do it home with Answr treatment. I’ve used it and it’s great. Simple and straight forward. Costa about £35.

MapleSyrupWaffles · 06/12/2023 14:58

I had the goldwell kerastraight done, which is one of the few that dont' use formaldehyde or other possible carcinogens. It doesn't smooth it as much as other treatments, though.

It seemed to help a little at first, but long term has not done much good, and my hair has still not gone back to its original curl pattern, which was sort of ringlety. Now it's just frizzy and wild but without the curl aspect. it's been a year since I had it done.

I am still tempted by the full-on straightening procedures, but not sure that I want to give up the curl totally - the one I had was supposed to keep your curl pattern and just reduce frizz/smooth it out, but that isn't really what happened.

My hair texture and condition has changed, and although it should have only lasted 3-6 months, I am still not back to normal a year later.

chesterlestreet · 06/12/2023 20:35

I have hair that looks great when done but an hour after leaving (multiple) hairdressers it gets a mind of its own and unless it's tied up I never look polished. I am tempted to try keratin but my hair is very flat on top. Would I be left with no body on top?
