Bollocky bollocks I’m too fat for my party dress

VenusClapTrap · 03/12/2023 12:40

I have a lovely party dress that I treated myself to a couple of years ago. Only wore it once but it made me feel great. Got it out last night for a party, and although I got it on, it looked awful, and trying to get it off again reminded me of peeling a chorizo - I was stuck for quite some time. 🤦‍♀️

So now I need a new dress for New Year’s Eve, as we are hosting a big gathering.

I’m a large 10 or size 12 depending on vanity sizing levels. All my weight is round my middle. Smallish boobs, legs ok. Blonde, suit muted colours. Black drains me.

Suggestions of flattering dresses gratefully received! Budget around £150.

I’d end up flashing minge and arse everywhere

That made me laugh! Yeah there’d be a danger of that, admittedly. I feel like my legs are my only good bit left. Everything else is no longer my friend.

I need to be able to sit, stand, dance, bend over in my clothes. Can't be tugging at hemlines.

pictoosh · 04/12/2023 10:32

I've never had 'legs' mind you...mine are short and quite stumpy.

Seaweed42 · 04/12/2023 10:36

What about a velvet suit with sparkly / sequin top under?

Bollocky Bollocks made me giggle OP!

Rina I like those trousers a lot! Not too flappy. I might just get away with them. No idea what I’d do about the top half though. My days of strappy tops are over and I can’t do the tuck thing as it makes my waist look massive.

I've worn mine with a black just tummy covering camisole and black longer length blazer (it's actually a blazer dress, I wear it as a jacket, could be a good dress look for you?) for a night out.

Chunky jumper (just covers tummy!) and clumpy boots for day.

I'm so impressed I might even wear them on Christmas Day with the M & S skimming silk shirt top below.

Love the velvet suit. Might be a bit hot though.

Love the blazer dress too, although I can’t wear black any more, sadly. The silk shirt is nice, will see if they do it in any other colours. Jigsaw have some nice silk shirts in too actually; although I’m not sure they’re exactly ‘party’.

OP I say try the pink dress or you’ll always be wondering about it. Chances are the model is tall hence it looking so short. At 5’ 3” you could find it OK. It could
even be the wildcard in old trying on days style.

I’m your height and also have good legs (best feature) and I find mini but with long sleeves very good. Also the sightly
puffed shoulder is good on me - could be on you too as we sound similar!

Mynewnameis · 04/12/2023 12:08

Vinted. Same dress next size up

Lurkingshark · 04/12/2023 12:59

I reckon try it if you come back to it. I think it’s fab and the short skirt / long sleeves is a nice silhouette IMHO.

if that’s not the one, how about a similar skirt shape in silver or gold and repurpose/ buy a top that you like ( I was going to say plainer but actually you could spend your money on a fantastic useful top in black/navy/white that you’ll wear forever).

apologues if I missed the bit that you dismissed separates. I got excited about the idea of finding a gold boucle skirt on vinted and a fancy navy silk top and feeling like wrapping paper. But there are loads of metallic skirts on vinted/ in shops..

I'm now after falling in love with a green velvet suit that I really don't need.

HelenaCh9 · 04/12/2023 16:14

That green velvet suit is lovely.

Some great stuff on these links.

The short stuff reminds me of Shirley Ballas on the Strictly results show trying to sit down in a”respectable” way in front of Claudia and the cameras in a very short dress. She has a lovely physique, but clawing at a hem is an awkward look.

AllTheChaos · 04/12/2023 17:17

When I was the same size and shape you describe (actually I was a bit fatter, small 14 / large 12), plus stumpy little legs (I’m barely 5’ and short legged to boot), I found Boden wrap style dresses great (not actual wrap dresses after a mortifying occasion where I ended up accidentally flashing the local vicar 😂) I also like the clothes from places like Collectif, I could check the measurements against my actual measurements, and they gave the illusion of shape where there was none. Well, I suppose a sticky-out, looks 7 months pregnant tummy is a shape, just not one I wanted to flaunt…

VenusClapTrap · 04/12/2023 17:30

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I’ve ordered the pink dress and the Oasis sequin shift. Not sure either is quite right but I’ll give them a whirl.

I have to go into town on Wednesday, so I’m going to pop into M&S and have a look at the silver jeans too. Also been thinking about the blazer dress idea, so might come back to that if I can find one that’s not black. Karen Millen has a fabulous yellow velvet one, but unfortunately yellow makes me look ill.

Check on vinted if they have it a size up?

whyamiawakestill · 04/12/2023 18:43

I'm too fat for my ski gear.. I feel your pain. Not much help, but it's come as a shock and I almost got stuck in my ski trousers too. Had to peel them down inside out.

Rina66 · 04/12/2023 19:02

@VenusClapTrap the blazer dresses come in cream too, there's at least these three, would look great with big pearl earrings and either platform heels or sock high heel ankle boots.

Mango had some lovely party wear in today.

Have a look on Vinted at Ralph Lauren Dresses
I've got a couple from there at a steal
They are drapey and forgiving and flattering.
I'm a big 10 and the size 10 are a good fit for me.
I've just had a Quick Look and there's a fair few on there

What about something like this OP?

https://meandthee.co.uk/products/just-deserts

Oh lord I love this. But I am hourglass…

Twinklewonderkins · 04/12/2023 21:07

@VenusClapTrap my DD is a stylist at JL and there is a piece of shaoewear they sell that she says brings you down a dress size, if you have one in your town could be worth a try to see if it de sausages you?
I wear a lot of black and feel quite black puddingy in my dress. :/

VenusClapTrap · 04/12/2023 21:35

Thanks for the tip, Whatatool; I’ve just snapped up a Ralph Lauren dress for twenty quid! Worth a punt at that price. I also had a look for the Iro dress I’m now too fat for, as suggested by pp, but no joy.

Not sure about cream. Rina, it’s just asking to have something spilt down it!

I’ve already got excellent shapewear, Twinkle. It only does so much! How fab to have a stylist daughter though. You must have a great wardrobe!
