Morning routine. Do you wash your face?

So I'm determined to get it right and sort out my very dry and sore skin with loads of blemishes. I have different products to use. For example night serums and moisturisers. So my question is what do I do with my face in the morning? Do I need to wash it with a cleanser first thing? It feels sticky to touch and it feels wrong to apply morning stuff just after washing it with water. Feels not enough. But I'm crazy about overusing cleansers and my skin is def dehydrated and irritated by all the anti-acne stuff. So maybe I'm wrong and just a bit of water is enough.

Do you use cleansers in the morning after your night routine?

I wash it in the shower with a very gentle face wash, and use a flannel / face cloth to help rinse it off - the gel wash feels a bit slimy and hard to rinse off otherwise. Then I use serum and moisturiser while face is still a bit damp. I’m no beauty expert though.

weyaye · 01/12/2023 11:10

I just use a flannel and water am and cleanse pm

MinnieCauldwell · 01/12/2023 11:11

I splash with warm water, follow with Simple face wipe and day moisturiser. Then hot cloth cleanser in the evening followed by mild toner and night cream.

Daisies12 · 01/12/2023 11:11

Yes I use La Roche Posay gel face wash morning and evening. Plus miceller water in evening to remove make up

NinNinJin · 01/12/2023 11:12

@Talipesmum @weyaye sorry for my ignorance? A wet flannel like to scrub it a bit? Not to dry it right? I'm a novice 😅

Yes - I gently rub the gel cleanser all over, rinse it off with my hands a bit under the shower, then get the flannel wet, and wipe my face over with that a few times, rinsing the flannel as I go. Flannel goes in the wash every few days. (Probably should be every day but I know my limits at organisation and it seems fine!). I don’t “scrub” with it - just wipe it over.

Ok thanks!

By the way any recommendations for good face cleansers are v very welcome 🤗 something gentle but at the same time def cleansing. I do get clogged pores and spots 😓😭

If your skin is this dry & sore, and sticky (?) in the morning, I would be advising a consultation within a dermatologist or a skin care expert.

It sounds like you've eczema in some form, and I'd be very wary of adopting a new skincare routine, especially vigorous rubbing.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/12/2023 11:25

I double cleanse at night before using serums/creams etc. so in the mornings I just clean with a soft facecloth rinsed in warm water. But my teens love this cleanser and use it morning & night so if you wanted to use somethign this might suit your skin type

@EarringsandLipstick it is sticky from my night routine products. They lock the water to moisturise the skin so the products still sit on the skin even by the morning. Don't have a problem with that as such. But feels wrong to top it up with the morning products

@NinNinJin just a quick rub over with a wet flannel in the morning, not really scrubbing

NinNinJin · 01/12/2023 11:42

Than you! I'm learning a lot!

tbh it sounds like you might be overcomplicated your skin routine? I've used clarins for many years and it's helped my skin... for acne, I use this face wash https://www.johnlewis.com/clarins-my-clarins-re-move-purifying-cleansing-gel-125ml/p3947478?size=125ml&s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiApaarBhB7EiwAYiMwqmo0Ws3oudqu5mgIkIVGUrWRNBN4EDQFt4BkvU-Qw4hP4Ui_6Rb5ihoCZVMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

and also products by zitsticka. tbh if acne is a real problem, you might need a course of antibiotics.

in terms of moisturiser as well as my regular clarins night cream, I use some cerave products... hyaluronic acid few times (for deep moisture) a week and niacinamide serum (for reducing breakouts) few times a week. I also use face masks (sanctuary clay or zitsticka purifying) once a week and lemon juice occasionally

I've never worked out what serum is for! Can anyone explain?

TeaAndStrumpets · 01/12/2023 11:55

I have a pile of matching flannels that I never use with soap, one wet corner to rinse face, the rest to dry, then straight in the wash.

WeRateSquirrels · 01/12/2023 12:01

I've heard several dermatologists say that water only in the morning is a good option if you have dry or sensitive skin. I only cleanse mine because I use tret at night and I feel that needs to be cleansed off. I use the Inkey List oat cleansing balm which is very mild.

depends on what's in it I guess. although 99.999% of what's out there is useless and they just use the word serum to get women to buy it... especially if it says something vague like beauty serum lol

SgtJuneAckland · 01/12/2023 12:05

I found my skin, eczema and spots cleared up and my skin became a lot less sensitive when I stopped with all the routines and products. I don't wear much make up now if any, wash my face morning and night in the shower or at the sink, with water or occasionally face wash if I've had make up on, use a day cream every day, and a night cream when I remember (Neal's yard mainly). My skin is so much better

cardibach · 01/12/2023 12:26

I love this one. Very gentle. The site will take you through a series of questions to recommend products though. Reasonable price. www.facetheory.com/products/signature-cleanser-c1

FastFood · 01/12/2023 12:27

I use soap free reusable wipes, which are super soft and gentle for the skin yet super efficient to remove makeup, without any cleanser.
Actually I haven't used a cleanser in over 3 years and my skin has never been better, despite living in a hard water area.

In terms of products, it's very limited:
AM:
A spray of orange blossom water as a toner
Niacinamide from the Ordinary
Hyaluronic acid from the Ordinary
Biafine face cream or some SPF50 if I plan to be out a lot.

PM
A spray of orange blossom water as a toner
Retinol from the Ordinary
Biafine night cream (but I forget most of the time actually)

The real night routine is for my hair (silk bonnet) my hands (copious amount of hand balm + vaseline and cotton gloves) and my teeth (mouthguard).
I look amazing at night as you can imagine, a mix between an old lady, mickey mouse and a boxer.

NinNinJin · 01/12/2023 12:29

@FastFood sounds amazing 🤣

What are the wipes that you use? I have one face cotton cloth from Boots but it takes ages to dry so I might need to stock up
