Face moisturiser

Could anyone recommend a face moisturiser please?
I want it for daily use under make up and the main criteria is that it doesn’t ball when applying make up.
I’ve tried a few recently and the one I liked most has been discontinued and is also £50 for a small jar.

I really like Cerave moisturising lotion - it doesn't pill for me under make up, but I leave it to soak in for a few minutes. Plus it's not expensive.

Novelhelp · 27/11/2023 17:45

Thank you Farmageddon.

Is it a thick cream? I looked at one in a tube which makes me think it will be a thick cream and will pill? (Thanks for understanding what I meant when I said ‘ball’) 🤣I looked at it just now on the Boots website and there are a few - facial am cream? smoothing cream? or do you use the more general one?

I use the lotion which comes in a pump bottle - https://www.cerave.com/skincare/moisturizers/daily-moisturizing-lotion

I just looked on the Boots UK website and they don't seem to have it, maybe it's sold out or something.
It should be sold in other places like pharmacies or maybe even some larger supermarkets.

Also, what SPF do you use? That could be causing pilling as well.

Bananaman123 · 27/11/2023 18:11

Neutrogena water gel is good under makeup

DuploTrain · 27/11/2023 18:14

The cerave in the pump bottle isn’t thick and it absorbs well.
Personally its not rich enough for me so I use the old classic Clinique dramatically different.

justalittlesnoel · 27/11/2023 18:16

Moisturiser will ball up when you're applying makeup if you're combining different based products (e.g water based and oil based), if you've got too much on your skin that hasn't absorbed, or the things are going on in the wrong order. If you tweak your routine or products that'll change the pilling, but there's no guarantee one won't pill unless you know exactly what products you're applying in what order.

Novelhelp · 27/11/2023 18:19

I find the richer moisturisers don’t absorb so sit on my skin. But my skin is dry apart from my nose/chin area so I need a decent one.
I use moisturising masks at night or Alpha Gold (alternative nights).
I have never found a SPF that doesn’t crumble so don’t use a separate one and I’m embarrassed to admit I do t even check if the moisturisers I use contain SPF.
I tend to use BB or CC mainly and just apply a little over whatever moisturiser I am using.

I use the Kiehl’s one, it’s about £30 for 50ml
and lasts me about a month. Really basic but nourishing yet light and sinks in nicely. Not greasy and not thick.
Ticks my boxes anyway!

Plumful · 27/11/2023 18:21

Kiehls ultra

mothertrucking · 27/11/2023 18:22

Revolution Miracle cream has done wonders for my skin.

I was reading about Kiehls yesterday (on MN but I don’t have time to find the post again) and somebody who seemed knowledgeable wrote that there is nothing helpful for skin in their products and it’s basically a smoke and mirrors brand?

I have just started using the night version of this, hoping that it works miracles!

RichTea63 · 27/11/2023 18:34

I love the Olay sensitive beauty fluid..very lightweight but moisturising and has spf 15. It's very cheap but lasts ages as you don't need much. They also do it in a cream which is thicker but I prefer the fluid moisturiser.

Mirrormeback · 27/11/2023 18:40

I use and love

Boots No 7 Hydraluminous overnight recovery gel cream

And

Superdrug Hada Labo Tokyo repair night cream

I use them at night over my serum or Retirides and also in the morning before applying my foundation

Leafpicker2000 · 27/11/2023 18:45

Bobbi Brown FaceBase

Helen1625 · 27/11/2023 18:58

Have you tried Liz Earle? I use the light moisture cream, but there's also the superskin range and the moisturising gel if you prefer

I don’t really know what that means but lightweight and non greasy works for me!
I don’t claim to be a skincare guru, I just use what I like and doesn’t irritate my skin.

I don't know much myself and am looking for pretty much the same thing as you.

It was something like Kiehls doesn't contain any active ingredients so its pointless applying it. And just pick one that you like the look and smell of as thats the only benefit of it. I can't find the thread now and expect its the same for many moisturisers.

The Aldi caviar ones always do well in blind tests. Cheap as chips too. I use the night cream, but they do day cream as well with SPF.

Sugarmole · 27/11/2023 19:42

@Novelhelp if you're using the alpha glycolic on alternate nights it may be too harsh for your skin especially with the change of weather. You may wish to look for a less harsh acid or decrease further your use of alpha.

Weleda skin food has good reviews.

Aldi skin care has good reviews .I use the retinol toner and rose toner around 4 times a week. Glycolic too harsh for me.

I used Alpha in past but too harsh.

I find ceravae a good moisturizer.

I'm currently using a spf sun protection as my daytime moisturizer but I have oily combination skin.

Ykn · 27/11/2023 19:43

M&S Pure hydrating day cream or Superdrug Naturally Radiant day cream are both excellent.

Make sure you exfoliate your face regularly especially if you wear foundation.

buckleten · 27/11/2023 19:46

The no.7 face moisturisers don't pill, the one I like best is protect and perfect. Avoid anything by l'oreal!

Plumful · 27/11/2023 19:48

What about Elemis?

Moonshine5 · 27/11/2023 19:48

Hate myself for advocating this but Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream
Mic drop
