Armpits smell

SpinningOutWaitingForYa · 20/11/2023 21:47

Slightly embarrassing, I've always been hot and sweaty. But now, even if I'm not sweating, I'm finding my armpits smell. Even after showering!

I put Mitchum gel on at night, the antiperspirant spray in the morning and double cleanse in the shower, the first being an antibacterial soap.

Does anyone have any other suggestions of things to try please?!

Apparently giving up onions and garlic makes a real difference. But to be honest I’d rather have b.o.

MaraScottie · 20/11/2023 21:51

Do you really give your armpits a good scrub? Get a loofah and give your pits a really good exfoliation, and shave too if you don't.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 20/11/2023 21:52

Anhydrol Forte.

Thank me later 👍😊

greenacrylicpaint · 20/11/2023 21:53

how do you wash your clothes?

5 sporty people here and bio powder and a warm wash (40 degrees) works best. softener only locks smells in it seems.

PumpkinSly · 20/11/2023 21:56

I get this with mitchum too so I use glycolic acid on my pits every day before showing. I just rub it in with my hands. It helps to remove the buildup of deodorant that's causing the smell.

CanIPutTheTreeUpYet · 20/11/2023 21:59

The only thing that worked when I used to compete in sports was Original Perspirex roll on. Wear it after a shower at night, it stings a little if you've just shaved, then wash off in the morning. I only applied it twice-three times a week (showered every night)
I don't compete anymore so don't need something as strong and I'm very surprised at how well Wild works. I wore a wool type jumper for four days and the pits just smelled like the deodorant scent! I couldn't believe it but was grateful when that's the only top I had to wear! I even made my DH smell it as I couldn't believe how well it worked, he said it smelled nice!
Oh, agree with pp about making sure it isn't your clothes holding on to the whiff. I had another jumper a couple of years ago that held on to BO so I'd leave bicarb on the pits overnight before putting it for a (bio powder) wash.

verrymerryberry · 20/11/2023 22:02

I find sure advanced protection better than Mitchum.

I find cumin onion and garlic particularly
Odoriferous.

Hibiscrub underarms is another idea not personally tried it!

SpinningOutWaitingForYa · 20/11/2023 22:11

Thank tou!

I've also been using glycolic acid a couple of times a week. It's definitely my armpits and not my clothes that are smelling.

Scrubbing with a flannel.

I have sensitive, reactive skin so I have to be careful with the wrong stuff. I remember trying some as a teen and it was so painful!

I shave every 1-2 days.

I can't eat onion or garlic (dietary) and I don't like spicy food so don't think it's that.

Thank you for your replies!

@MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy where would one purchase?

OP posts:
justalittlesnoel · 20/11/2023 22:12

As above glycolic acid is fab (the huge bottle from the ordinary is really well priced and lasts forever). Also I find using Odaban before any super hot holidays is amazing, it stops perspiration so well.

cpphelp · 20/11/2023 22:13

@MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy -
I second this. You can but it over the counter to wear at night.
Do not shave your armpits before as it STINGS. Two or three nights of this and you'll be good for a good six months

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 20/11/2023 22:26

I find this happens with Mitchum. I've switched to using shield deodorising soap for my pits and it really helped.

cpphelp · 20/11/2023 22:44

Also, Botox in you underarms as a last resort?

TotalOverhaul · 20/11/2023 23:06

Crazy as it sounds, alcohol-based mouth wash. After washing and drying thoroughly, splash it on under your armpits. It may not work for everyone but it works for me. The minty smell is nice and I guess the alcohol kills the bacteria that cause the BO.

GlomOfNit · 21/11/2023 09:49

I suffer similarly. One thing (rec'd here!) that really turned things around was Dettol antibacterial YELLOW hand soap. Yes, tablet soap. Do NOT use shower gels, they seem to be particularly bad at washing away stink, and apparently can cause stinky build-up in clothing. So I wash in the shower every morning and scrub my pits with the Dettol soap, and I've changed over to a salt crystal deodorant, think it's the Pitrok one, which is basically a solid salt crystal you wet and rub on. Sounds odd but most days I smell fresher than using my habitual Dove spray.

I find this is hormonal-related so at stinkier times of the cycle (and HRT not making much difference here!) I'll try to remember to have a quick underarm wash and apply more Pitrok before bed.

If you find that the underarms in your tighter clothing picks up the smell, I've had success soaking those items in a white vinegar and water bucket before washing, and I now also use vinegar instead of fabric conditioner in the machine, bio powder rather than washing liquid (washing liquids and conditioner lock in smells) and sometimes use Dettol 'washing sanitisier' or something like that - I hate buying extra crap but it does seem to help.

I'm currently doing a clothes challenge which involves wearing a merino wool dress for 30 days in a row (not hardcore enough to do the 100 day one!) and amazingly, the wool dress is not smelling whatsoever. I put that down to the magical properties of merino wool, my switch to Pitrok, and occasionally spraying the armpit area of the dress with an alcohol/water spray.

ZMas · 21/11/2023 10:01

Maybe a stupid question but do you shave your arm pits? Even just a bit of stubble can really hold on to any odour.

StarlightLady · 21/11/2023 10:05

OP, you mention you shave every 2 days. Do you wet shave? Will your sensitive skin handle a daily shave? A regular daily wet shave might help and ensure it is is a sharp blade. Even underarm stubble can retain smells.

As people up thread have mentioned, are you sure that it is actually you and not being retained by your clothes?

SpinningOutWaitingForYa · 21/11/2023 18:49

Thanks everyone!

Yes, I shave every 1-2 days. Even when I do it daily it doesn't change.

Weirdly at the moment it is more of the smell than the sweat.

It's definitely me and not my clothes as it smells worse when I don't have any on!

I have that yellow dettol soap and do use it as well as the glycolic from the Ordinary.

Looks like I could change my Mitchum for something else. Does the pit rock stain clothes?

Use lemon or lime if your skin can’t tolerate strong stuff

Jeannie88 · 30/12/2023 17:19

Baby talc? No expert but it's my go to for a quick fix. Smells gorgeous, soaks up sweat, dry so doesn't show through. X

Jeannie88 · 30/12/2023 17:20

Also instead of soap for a quick armpit clean, shaving foam.is condensed soap so is more powerful? As I said, just my personal go to options xx

Bluecat7 · 30/12/2023 17:31

I had this a month or so ago. I used a strong smelling soap and really gave my armpits a good scrub with a bath brush. Then I used Trust deodorant and Lady Mitchum (which didn’t work for you- maybe try sanex instead?) This worked fine.

Woodraff65 · 30/12/2023 17:33

Driclor
or Botox

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 30/12/2023 17:53

Driclor is a very powerful antipersperant for excessive sweating. And I do mean very powerful. It stings when you first apply it and you have to build up the use of it to get skin tolerance.

I know you say its the smell not the sweat but the smell comes from the sweat. Maybe give it a try.

SirQuintusAureliusMaximus · 30/12/2023 17:54

sorry - I've just seen your post about sensitive skin - forget Driclor then. your armpits would probably melt.
