Permanently chapped lips

OnthePisteAgain · 12/11/2023 10:04

So it's that time of year when my lips seem to be chapped all the time. I have tried so many remedies (listed below) has anyone found anything that really works?

Already tried: Burts Bees, LRP Cicaplast lip, Dr PawPaw, Weleda, Nivea, O'Keef's, Carmex, Vaseline, Boots, Blistex

I find the cheap as chips original "Chap Stick" to be really good. Like, the only thing which works, good. Also magic cure if you get any dry skin round your nose after a cold or such.

@OnthePisteAgain the only thing that is guaranteed to work for dry / chapped lips is 'Nivea 2 n 1 caring lip scrub'... you can buy it in Boots or any pharmacy. It's in a little green lipstick like tube and looks like a normal lip balm but it's way better! Don't be put off by the word 'scrub' as it's not a scrub btw! You apply it in the same way as regular lip balm and from the first application you will see results... The key with this product is there are little granules in it that gently softens and exfoliates your lips while you're wearing it. I've recommended it to so many people and it just simply works! Also once sorted, never leave your lips bare, so either lip balm or a subtle moisturising lipstick...

Absolutely agree the lanolin nipple cream. Brand lansinoh.
Make sure to use it at bedtime just before you go to sleep and throughout the day.
Many of the suggestions here are things I already tried when I had extremely sore chapped lips and they made little difference or actually the perfume etc irritated my lips more, eg 8 Hour Cream was not good. I used to think Blistex medicated in the small tube was the only thing that worked but even that had menthol in, so although it felt ‘cooling’ and soothing it didn’t really help fix things. However when I started breastfeeding and had lansinoh at home I tried it for chapped lips and it helped so much.

Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream. Heavy slick of it before bed really helps.

Nuxe Reve de Miel honey lip balm - pot not stick

Brilliant stuff. Only balm that stops my lips and mouth from cracking

evryevrytime · 12/11/2023 15:07

I hesitate to recommend it as it's so expensive but I have never found a lip balm that works as well as the Crème de la Mer one. Bought in desperation on a ski holiday and it fixed my face.

Lansinoh nipple balm also works well though and is a fraction of the price!

Curlysusie · 12/11/2023 15:20

Cath kidston lip balm really works for me. It's really thick so is protective

Back21970 · 12/11/2023 16:16

I used the La Mer balm for years and agree it is very good, just can’t justify the price now unfortunately, although 2 pots did generally last me all year (last time I bought one it was about £60).

I’ve been using Zoe Bee gold cream at night and it’s good, it’s a moisturiser not a lip balm but works for me.

Under lipstick or during the day I use an Ultrasun balm with SPF.

Might try the borage oil as find at this time of year when I sometimes wear long lasting red lipsticks the dryness gets even worse.

Another Nuxe fan here.
I used to get dreadful chapped/sore lips - I'm a lip licker/chewer.
Off a recommendation here I bought some Nuxe rive de miel and it has hands down changed my life! I literally have a pot in every room and bag.

stardust777 · 12/11/2023 17:26

I like this lip balm from Bloom and Blossom -

lip service

TeenLifeMum · 12/11/2023 17:28

No7 lip cream which soaks in then nipple cream at bed time.

JerkintheMerkin · 12/11/2023 17:36

Lanisoh nipple cream is amazing. Wouldn't go back to anything else.

KissTheRains · 12/11/2023 17:46

I used to get really painful cracked lips. Being outdoors walking the dog in autumn and winter etc. I tried a few ointments, but none seemed to help. One year it was so bad it was kinda ugly so i got one of my Buffs* and lifted it up over my lips whenever I was out the house.
My lips cleared up and, although they still get a bit dry etc, they haven't been as bad since as I wear a Buff a lot and just lift it up to protect lips and chin and neck from the cold, even lifting it up over my nose a little if it's really cold... Or if I want to rob a bank.

(*A buff is a stretchy & thin tube of material that I used to wear on a motorcycle. There's tons of them these days for a few quid on eBay, Neck tube or Snood or Buff etc.)

Niffler29 · 12/11/2023 17:51

Clairns Hydra Essential lip balm is the only thing that’s ever worked when mine get really bad. Expensive but incredible stuff and you don’t need to re apply multiple times a day either.

Pumpy001 · 12/11/2023 17:53

I used to use kiels lip balm and was addicted to it for over two decades, otherwise I'd have chapped lips.

Now I use a biossance one , and use it twice a week and completely chap free other days

Alwaystired2023 · 12/11/2023 17:53

I hate this, I also get a ring of chapped around my lips like lipliner which is delightful. Only thing that works for me is EOS which they don't seem to sell here anymore so I buy on Amazon for £9 🤦🏼‍♂️

Verbena17 · 12/11/2023 17:58

I’ve had eczema all my life and although it’s pretty much at bay currently, I still have to Vaseline my lips and moisturise my hands throughout each day.

Once you’re lips are chapped it won’t generally be a fast cure to get them back to normal but carry some Vaseline around with you and as soon as you feel you’re at the point where they are slightly dry, put a thin layer of Vaseline onto them. Redo that every time including before you go to sleep.

Drink plenty of water and make sure you’re not lacking vitamins and minerals. Lack of B3/niacin can cause cracking /dry lips.p so you could up your intake of B vitamins to see if it helps.

Houseplanter · 12/11/2023 17:58

8 hour lip balm in either the pot or the tube at bedtime
The lipstick style one during the day

Only thing that's worked for me

ToffeeSheep · 12/11/2023 18:18

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is great. They do a lipstick type version or if you are flying anywhere you can get these little tins in duty free 😁

Permanently chapped lips
ragrugger · 12/11/2023 18:24

Mine improved when I changed to a toothpaste without SLS in. Before that they were peeling. They’re still very dry and can get flaky but nothing like they were. The thing that holds mine at bay most is the Nuxe in a pot (stick didn’t work well for me). It’s not perfect but definitely does the most. I’ve tried all the ones you have plus Lansinoh and Elizabeth Arden (was allergic to that).
