Permanently chapped lips

OnthePisteAgain · 12/11/2023 10:04

So it's that time of year when my lips seem to be chapped all the time. I have tried so many remedies (listed below) has anyone found anything that really works?

Already tried: Burts Bees, LRP Cicaplast lip, Dr PawPaw, Weleda, Nivea, O'Keef's, Carmex, Vaseline, Boots, Blistex

Have you tried Lanolips? Are you drinking enough water? And getting enough fat in your diet?

Ducksinthebath · 12/11/2023 10:11

Are you licking your lips? I trained myself not to and things have improved.

Also using Laneige lip sleeping mask during the day as well as at night.

No not tried Lanolips. I think I drink enough water but maybe could drink more, this happens every winter though. I have a good balanced diet and think I have enough fat as a cheese lover!

The only thing that works for me (and I've tried a lot of products) is thorough application and soak in of Blistex intensive moisturiser then a generous application of dark blue Nivea stick on top. Repeat multiple times a day and never be without them. Gentle exfoliation with a flannel before bed. Most childhood winter pics have me with flaky bleeding lips, I'm obsessive now about keeping them in good condition.

BadgeronaMoped · 12/11/2023 10:22

I used to love blistex, I currently use carmex. If I can find where I've put it, I use this weird stuff DM got me, Elizabeth Arden 8-hour cream (although I don't think it's designed for lips). The 8-hour cream is brilliant when my lips are really chapped.

I have Sjögren’s syndrome and my lips are constantly dry so totally understand and empathise. The other stuff are just a waste of money and keep your lips dried out even more. The best thing I’ve tried that’s worked is Dr lipps original nipple balm multi skincare use. But I found what they use in it (as it’s quite expensive for a small 8ml tube) and just bought a large 500ml tub of Prounol 100% pure lanolin and it cost around £20 from Amazon . I’ve had it for about two years and just fill up an old Vaseline tin with it. I apply it morning , through the day when necessary and at night before bed. I’ve never had a problem since. It also makes ur lips nice and shiny so no gloss needed. One word warning tho … not the tastiest of things, boyfriends/husbands/girlfriends won’t like it but you could try mixing a bit of mint oil through it to sweeten the flavour . But is definitely worth it. Hope this helps.

Or any lanolin-based nipple cream like Lanisoh - it works out cheaper. That during the day, plus a PP's suggestion of Laneige during the night sorted my chapped lips out.

Yourebeingtooloud · 12/11/2023 10:26

You need lansinoh- the breastfeeding stuff though I think they also do a smaller tube now for lips. It works amazingly.

mechanicalpencil · 12/11/2023 10:26

Yes. I have suffered from terribly dry, peering lips all my life.

I have tried all the lip balms/creams.
None work.

The only thing to work for me is Borage oil (Starflower). Put it on every night before bed and really run the oil in.

I've tried so many balms and potions and 8 hour cream is the best by far. They do a lipstick version; untinted and various shades of tint. It gets me through winter (and it's got SPF for summer too)

scoobysnaxx · 12/11/2023 10:29

Blistex didn't help me. I love Carmex.

I slather it on my lips thickly before going to sleep and every morning without fail I wake up with the the softest, plumpest intensely moisturised lips.

If they are that chapped try this and a lip exfoliate. And drink your water!

learieonthewildmoor · 12/11/2023 10:41

Vaseline is just an occlusive: it doesn’t moisturise your lips. I’ve found alternating between an exfoliating balm and a moisturising one works.
I’m Australian and found an exfoliating balm by a NZ company called sans ceuticals- Lip Aid. It’s $19 AUD.
I was using this overnight treatment by Ilia
https://iliabeauty.com/products/lip-wrap-hydrating-mask but I started having an allergic reaction to it.
Malin and Goetz make a great lip moisturiser but it’s not cheap.

I've always used Carmex, but now I put a facial oil on I also put that on my lips twice a day and it's definitely improved the situation. I used to use Pixi rose oil but now use Sali Hughes Face Blanket- both lovely

Nuxe Reve de Miel honey lip balm - pot not stick

mynameiscalypso · 12/11/2023 12:04

There's a Burts Bees overnight one that I find helpful although it's not a complete cure. I find myself using Neal's Yard Rose Beauty balm on my lips and it's as good as anything else.

SpottyElephant · 12/11/2023 12:09

Another vote for Nuxe in a pot. I use it morning and evening and my lips are always super soft. I ran out and used an Elizabeth Arden stick I had and within a day my lips were dry and sore.

Turmerictolly · 12/11/2023 12:12

.

Klippetyklip · 12/11/2023 12:18

Have you tried Blistex medicated, it’s in a metal tube. I find this works much better than the moisturiser that’s in a plastic tube. I buy is in Superdrug, I think it’s approx £2.80.

Strawberrypicnic · 12/11/2023 12:25

Certain toothpastes make my lips very dry. The other week I picked up a sensitive toothpaste by mistake and within a week the corners of my mouth were cracked and I couldn't work out why. Then I switched back to 'normal' toothpaste and it was a lot better! I also rinse my lips really thoroughly after brushing my teeth to make sure there is no toothpaste residue.

Britpopbaby · 12/11/2023 12:29

Nuxe reve de miel lipbalm

LilyLemonade · 12/11/2023 12:33

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream - I use the normal one not the lip balm. Use it overnight. Really effective.

Barnowlsandbluebells · 12/11/2023 12:36

Dr Lipp. I spend a lot of time outdoors during the Winter and this prevents any dryness.

thistimelastweek · 12/11/2023 12:37

Bepanthen nappy care ointment is great.
