Is a jumper dress ok for interview?

Its a social worker related role.

I don't do jackets or blazers. Not a fan of suits at all

I get away with black fine knit dresses in current job (which should be suited).

At my place of work(school) the candidates arrive and wait in school office, get taken to Headteacher’s office where they would remove a coat. In autumn/winter arriving in a dress looks underdressed.

Again, as long as she's not wearing a over garment that is dirty, smelly or has badges with inappropriate slogans in it, no one is going to give a shiny shite about the coat / jacket she arrives in.

I interviewed someone recently who spent the whole interview holding onto their overcoat. It was a big puffy thing. She looked like she was ready to run out of the room at any moment. I found that very weird. But it was the behaviour I found weird, not the coat.

Gosh did nobody offer to take her/his coat?

A coat is part of your overall appearance. I wouldn’t wear my parka over a smart dress even if I was removing it on entry to the building. An interview starts on arrival. I’ve always asked receptionists and security what they thought of a candidate and whether they were polite to them.

We said they could hang it on the back of their chair but they chose not to.

And if they told you the candidate was polite but was wearing a huge winter coat, that would put you off??

Most social workers I know are quite cool and edgy. The only time I've ever seen them in a suit is for court. And even then it would be paired with DMs.

A black jumper dress sounds perfect to me and don't worry about a coat or blazer. Good luck with your interview.

Catandsquirrel · 12/11/2023 17:07

That sounds good to me then if it's what you're most comfortable in, is in good repair and fits well.

I think I'd prefer brogues but the black ones also fine if polished up well (unless you mean new).

I wouldn't give it much more thought to be honest. Dress is fine, people have confirmed it's appropriate for the sector, 2 good choices of shoes. No need to start ordering more.

If you do happen to be ordering something on Mark's though, I think their fine cotton opaque tights look more polished in winter than a lot of others (on me I mean- I don't go round appraising people's hosiery!) - not shiny or staticky at all.

Yes to a good coat.

Charity sector here, so similar vibes, and that outfit would be totally fine.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/11/2023 14:19

I think that the dress and shoes the OP has posted look absolutely fine - although I also like the idea of wearing a blazer over the top.

As a previous poster has said - social workers only wear suits if going to court . It may depend on the type of social work role you have - but in many cases it would actually be inappropriate to dress too formally whilst making client visits . I'm not sure about social workers all being 'cool and edgy' (I know a lot) but dress code for the job itself is definitely smart casual, no jackets needed .

I don’t necessarily think you dress how you would doing the job. If I went for a job in a supermarket I’d still dress smartly. It’s about showing yourself at your best and conveying respect to the organisation.
