Is a jumper dress ok for interview?

Its a social worker related role.

I don't do jackets or blazers. Not a fan of suits at all

I get away with black fine knit dresses in current job (which should be suited).

What's the dress code for the role? Is there an expectation to wear suits at interview?

Catandsquirrel · 11/11/2023 09:50

What shoes and bag? Do you have a photo of the dress?

I mean, it may be ok if you know the industry and they don't expect suits plus it's smart and decent quality, hair and nails tidy, makeup if you wear it.

Do you have a more structured dress or skirt/ trousers and top?

Sorry to say a jumper dress wouldn't give me an impression of having made a big effort or being dressed for interview if I'm honest. I'm sure you look professional day to day but depending how competitive this role is, I might go a bit smarter.

SgtJuneAckland · 11/11/2023 09:53

Social workers are in such short supply I'd imagine you could go in a bin bag!
I work in an adjacent field and a jumper dress would be fine here.

Strawberryfieldsforeverrr · 11/11/2023 10:06

I think its worth putting your best foot forward for an interview. Maybe trousers and a blouse of you don't want to wear a suit?

chachachachangesoolala · 11/11/2023 10:12

I'm in a related field and think a smart jumper dress sounds completely fine.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 11/11/2023 10:13

Maybe a shirt underneath, depending on the neckline of the jumper dress.

LlynTegid · 11/11/2023 14:16

I think so.

FizzyLaser · 11/11/2023 14:18

As long as it’s not all bubbled acrylic

Cinnamonbunday · 11/11/2023 15:27

No bubbled acrylic but maybe a good idea might be to order a new dress same as the ones I have but new so it looks smarter and like I made an effort.

I don't feel good in structured/formal clothes. Just tried my only suit on and hate it. I think feeling good and like myself will help my confidence rather than feeling awkward.

Good that people working in the area think it would be fine.

Agree. Good call. Shoes?

Janieforever · 11/11/2023 15:28

Interview is usually much more formal than actually doing the job. Can you wear a blazer over it?

IDontHateRainbows · 11/11/2023 16:06

A smart/ fitted one - absolutely fine

A long sloppy Joe thing, maybe not

Cinnamonbunday · 11/11/2023 16:10

I have these Captain Sensible shoes. Or brogues.

I use a laptop rucksack for work. My other bags are unsuitable so might have to skip bag. Folder with ID papers? Or is it still a thing that women need a handbag?

My dress options are similar to these.

I am looking for dresses online, would buy something more formal but not being able to try it on is problematic and I haven't time to shop in person. Knitted dresses more likely to fit without trying on .

I think what you've shown looks ok. I don't work in that field and generally would go smarter if in any doubt but the pic looks ok. You can make sure you look polished by having clean shoes, neat hair etc.

Cinnamonbunday · 11/11/2023 16:13

Not sure that worked. I am having technology issues today. I think I have 20 plus tabs open with black dresses!! I already own a silly number of black dresses.

An interview goes both ways. Ask yourself if you'd want to work for a manager who wouldn't give you a job because you didn't wear a suit. To me in this day and age it's a sign of a toxic and dated work culture. At my last interview (professional role) I wore a corduroy skirt, thick black tights and an old faded blouse as I like it. I got the job. On slobby days I can turn up in joggers. I don't like work cultures that make daily life into a fashion show and reduces my value to my appearance, but I know some people prefer that and the structure and formality it gives.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 11/11/2023 16:19

PS that jumper dress and shoe combo is divine! I love it!

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 16:22

Always always always be your smartest for any interview. First impressions count.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 16:23

The dress is fine but I’d wear a smart jacket over it.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 16:23

Or nice trench coat or smart coat.

StasisMom · 11/11/2023 16:29

I think that dress is smart and fine tbh. A smart cost like a woollen one or trench would be good if possible. Good luck!

chachachachangesoolala · 12/11/2023 14:27

I don't understand why costs are being recommended. Unless the interview is outside then she won't be wearing a coat during it, will she? Same with bags.
V odd!

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/11/2023 14:49

A coat to arrive in- first impression.

FizzyLaser · 12/11/2023 16:12

I agree that the coat is almost irrelevant. The interview panel will not be putting out a red carpet and ushering her out of her car.

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/11/2023 16:16

At my place of work(school) the candidates arrive and wait in school office, get taken to Headteacher’s office where they would remove a coat. In autumn/winter arriving in a dress looks underdressed.
