Has how to look expensive / polished changed?

Newpeople · 08/11/2023 17:53

Inspired by the Chanel bag thread which is a great read.

The many previous threads on here describe (to me) what seems like a very dated look. Even a bouncy blow dry now seems old fashioned.

Anyone fancy discussing what makes someone looked polished / expensive these days? In my experience (people I know and have met) it’s vastly different and much more casual these days.

Spending a bit more on well cut clothes with quality fabrics makes a big difference.

I know what you mean, what's considered stylish has changed so much in the last few years and anything that looks at all high maintenence is probably out. But making an effort (without really appearing to) is still key to looking classy/polished I would think: having clothes that fit you properly (altered if necessary) and spending a bit more on good quality shoes/accessories, making sure everything is clean and well cared for... These things don't change. Now if only I bothered to do them myself..

I have bought fake collars to wear under jumpers so it looks like I'm wearing a shirt underneath

I think polished is now a very neutral ( but not skims style), boxy, clean lines sort of look. No frills. Leather handbag but you wouldn't know the make from looking. Very simple jewellery, usually gold. Pared back wherever possible, especially make up.

Totally agree - very accurate description.

I’d add natural fabrics like merino, cashmere, silk, suede and cotton. Well cut denim jeans with a neutral (dark or light) jumper and some suede or leather boots.

Are you hoping this looks polished/more expensive?

minipie · 08/11/2023 18:56

Good skin, healthy natural looking hair and subtle makeup and jewellery are still the biggest part of it IMO

Clothing style will vary according to area/tribe. But agree natural fabrics and materials like leather, sheepskin, cashmere, silk may well feature.

I agree.

Well made with subtle branding if any.

Quality materials and not skintight or too baggy just well fitting.

@feralunderclass

I think it does. It looks better for teams calls in work anyway and saves me the hassle of washing and ironing a full shirt.

Thetulesarepretty · 08/11/2023 19:17

Sounds dull as dishwater tbh. Someone will mention the word 'classic' in a mo obvs

sipsqueak · 08/11/2023 19:22

The trouble is that trying to look "expensive" almost always has the opposite effect IMO

TheDuchessOfMN · 08/11/2023 19:29

A good haircut
Clothes that fit properly
Good teeth

SarahAndQuack · 08/11/2023 19:49

At this time of year, a lovely coat. If you buy a really nice winter coat it'll be the first thing people notice most of the time, because you'll wear it all of the time. And it'll make you feel really happy if you love the colour and the cut and so on. At the moment I have a lovely dark teal wool coat with a turn-up collar and a beautiful flattering shape, and it really does the job.

Absolutely

I think it’s a case of less is more and definitely natural fabrics. I think the big overstyled hair or hair extensions is dated looking. I like a simple bob. Naomi Watts looks great and dresses really well.

Usernamen · 08/11/2023 20:36

The ‘done nothing with this’ hair is a bigger feature these days.

I know it’s not strictly S&B, but facial features come into it too, especially having a very slim face.

Actually (flaming imminent…), being very slim in general.

I just don’t think you can really pull off the look without a thin, toned body.

NameHopper2000 · 08/11/2023 21:00

Be confident in your own style and buy well made clothing in the style that suits you. Being groomed and polished in your chosen style meaning regular hair cuts, clear skin, tidy make up (if wearing it), clean shoes, clothes ironed etc.

Oaksilver · 08/11/2023 21:01

I think it’s great now when I shop that I can see past all the polyester and pick out a simple cotton shirt or t shirt that will get lots of wear and will go with everything. This is after years of being like a magpie for all the bright coloured bells and whistles clothes that never went with anything. I’m much more careful now with what I buy and try to operate a one in one out policy.

minipie · 08/11/2023 21:46

This is the elephant in the room isn’t it.

No lady who lunches around here would do without botox.

Floraflower3 · 08/11/2023 22:19

I agree with a PP that clothes wise will depend on your tribe as to what looks polished/expensive.

Makeup wise I think the 'clean girl' makeup is the way to go, gold jewellery and a lovely coat/ well matched accesories.
