Has how to look expensive / polished changed?

Inspired by the Chanel bag thread which is a great read.

The many previous threads on here describe (to me) what seems like a very dated look. Even a bouncy blow dry now seems old fashioned.

Anyone fancy discussing what makes someone looked polished / expensive these days? In my experience (people I know and have met) it’s vastly different and much more casual these days.

I'd love to look polished - it's something that eludes me. I suspect I'm too lazy to put the work in but even if I did, I'd be more Fergie than Diana!

I have absolutely no skin in the game here, believe me when I say I do not care about the wives of the King's sons.

HOWEVER Megan Markle does not push fasion boundaries in any way, she's as bland as the Princess of Wales.

Bland, Bland, boring. Both of them.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle
See here. Bland is the plain heeled shoes and coat dress. Meghan went for a tonal outfit with boots. Just cooler.

Bland is the puff skeeves. Meghan went for a subtle off the shoulder.

Meghan's caped dress at the funeral was outstanding and way more fashion forward than everyone else was wearing whilst still being appropriate

You're being a bit weird.

They are both wearing tonal outfits in all your shots.

As I said, I think they're both very safe in their fashion choices.

BOTH.

I don't see either of them as a stylish outlier.

And if I had to comment, I agree that Megan's outfit at the funeral was outstanding. It's probably the best I've seen her look.

But, again, you are putting the photos up, I do not think it was inappropriate. Because it wasn't about her, it really wasn't a fashion opportunity (or shouldn't have been).

And I do not dislike Meghan Markle any more than I dislike Catherine Middleton.

They're not fashion icons though.

@NearlyMonday It would in my opinion, or very deep burgundy

@Galiana context matters. Is MM a fashion avant garde? Does she wear dresses made of meat or toenails? No. But what she did was wear things that were on trend and stylish in a way the RF didn't do. Rather than sticking to extremely dull coat dresses and nude heels, she pushed royal boundaries by not wearing tights, architectural shapes, knee high dress boots etc. no one is saying she is some ground breaking fashion radical, just that within the previously perfectly pleasant but dull arse royal wardrobes, she was a breath of fashion fresh air. That's also pushing boundaries. Boundaries aren't always at the far end of freakish.
Fortunately since MM, others, particularly Kate have seen it's not just acceptable but desirable for royals to look on trend. Still not exactly groundbreaking day wear but at least it's now vaguely fashionable.
