When did you start going grey? And do you dye your hair?

Just want some reassurance that it's not only happening to me that is having premature grey hairs spout up... I have clusters of grey all over my hair.

They started just after having my 2nd child nearly 2 years ago and I started to get them more after my third child was born 7 months ago.

I'm in my early thirties and used to think going grey only happened to older men and women.

I refuse to dye my hair. But don't know what I will do when grey takes over the whole of my hair.

Mine came mid 40's

justanothermummma · 05/11/2023 23:35

Started after my first baby at 23 but kept colouring my hair. I'm 28 now, hair back to natural colour and I have noticeable greys. Decided I'm just going to let it happen naturally, save money and no roots 😂. But I didn't expect greys so soon... I have a stripe coming.... 😭😂

Whalewatchers · 05/11/2023 23:37

Roots look a lot worse than a bit of grey here and there IMO

AuntMarch · 06/11/2023 00:22

I've had the odd one over the years, always wiry, wavy (my hair is dead straight) and sticking up and seems to have appeared overnight yet be 3 inches long.

Just this week though, suddenly seeing silver streaks throughout my hair. I just turned 38 and it was literally the day after my birthday suddenly loads of grey!

Want2beme · 06/11/2023 00:53

Mid 40s, I think. Hairdresser says I'm now 30% grey at 57. I was having just a few highlights to cover the grey up until about 3 years ago, but now i don't colour it at all and am happy enough with it.

porridgeisbae · 06/11/2023 00:57

I started going gray at 15 so have always dyed it, except for a couple of rad fem phases.

I think it's aging to have it grey unless you're in your 20s and have dyed it that way.

So I'll probably always dye it.

Morewineplease10 · 06/11/2023 01:00

Noticed my first around 33 when I was immensely stressed! I'm not very grey now, many years later but I do dye my hair - I always have as I like trying different colours.

I don't want to go fully grey for decades yet.

I think it really suits some people though and it is an expensive faff as well.

MrShady · 06/11/2023 01:04

40, redhead and none
I do have white hairs in my eyebrows which have appeared!

TheOGCCL · 06/11/2023 08:22

I’m late forties and have only got the odd grey haIr, but I dye my hair anyway, different colours for a change, so it becomes hard to tell. My hair is a bit gingery/ auburn and I think is often slowest to go grey.

BigSkies2022 · 06/11/2023 09:05

I started using home box dye to cover greys from my late thirties. I liked the glossy good condition it left my hair as well. By my early 50s I had enough grey that the box dyes didn't really stick to my hair any more, so I started going to the hairdresser for professional (and expensive) work.

Late fifties now, and after seeing some photos of myself on a recent holiday, where the dye (I'm naturally a dark brunette) looked a bit harsh, I've decided to grow out the grey, which is mostly just at the front. I am likely to end up with silver at the front, dark at the back. I'm sure I'm going to hate it for a while, but I'm fed up with the expense, and the chemicals, and the feeling that it never looks quite right. I've tried having silver streaks put in to soften the regrowth, but my hair is so dark, I have to use strong peroxide to strip the pigment, eventually it goes yellow, and the condition deteriorates.

So it's sit it out and wait for the confident silver fox to emerge!

Nikol Johnson on YouTube is good on going grey, good make-up and style for the 'mature woman', and I'm following her for ideas and a confidence boost while I make this change.

Mid 50s and my hair is still mainly mouse. I have recently dyed it, purple so not to hide the greys

Wednesdaysotherchild · 06/11/2023 09:39

A few individual strands at 42 but it doesn’t really show. Eyebrows starting to go grey more obviously though!

frostyfingers · 06/11/2023 10:52

My first grey appeared when I was late thirties and I had highlights for about 5 years, then more and more colour until good old lockdown put a stop to visits to the hairdresser. I was a bit nervous about home colouring so left it and by the time I went back to the hairdresser it was more than halfway out. Having done the really hard bit I thought I'd just go for it and have now been completely grey for about 2 years.

It's quite streaky and I'm quite often been asked if it's coloured. It took a while to get used to, and I still feel as though I've aged before my time (silly, I know) - 58 this year - BUT my hair is in much better condition and it saves lots of time and money.

If it hadn't been for lockdown I expect I would have carried on with the dye a bit longer. I have struggled a bit with what to wear as my original colour was quite dark brown and some of my clothes don't work as well but I'm getting there.

Deathraystare · 06/11/2023 12:58

Not actually sure when as I have dyed my hair since I was 11!

I am now 63. Could not afford the hairdresser this time so used the colour range which is advertised on the tv (you know the one - with a tangerine colour, a pink one etc but I used the Urban Brown one. It is lovely!). Coloured it myself and managed not to make a mess!

Perfectlystill · 06/11/2023 22:38

Mid to late 40s.

Yes

MonikerBing · 07/11/2023 05:41

I developed a streak of grey (a few strands) when I was 27.It did coincide with a huge shock that happened in my life, but that was possibly coincidental.

I still have the same streak now I'm 53. I did try leaving the grey streak in lockdown to see if it looked like a cool distinguished, striking, witchy, streak, but it doesn't! There's not enough of it -so I do die it.

The rest of my hair is still dark brown. I will be ok going fully grey when it happens, I suspect it will do when I hit menopause.

Tiddlywinkly · 07/11/2023 06:21

I had my first grey/white hair on my head the day before my 39th birthday on holiday 🙄. I took a photo; it was a beaut. A very different wirey texture to my straight hair. No more grey head hairs yet, but the odd one in my eyebrows at 40.

When it gets more pronounced, I'll start getting it professionally coloured. I've got red hair that's gradually darkened with age. I think I'll end up with warm dark blonde as red dye is hard to maintain.

When did you start going grey? And do you dye your hair?
BMrs · 07/11/2023 06:46

I was in my 20s. Almost 40 now and they're coming thick and fast and I do dye my hair to cover.

My sister is a year older and barely has any at all.

Kalodi · 07/11/2023 06:50

I'm 29, first greys came in after I stopped breastfeeding my third son early this year. They are still far and few between. I dye my hair sometimes but not because of the grey, I've just often had those moments where I fancied changing my hair colour but I use the non-permanent box hair dye. I am considering stopping hair dying all together now though and just letting my greys do their thing.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 07/11/2023 06:51

I started going grey in my late 20s. Both of my parents went grey very early. I dyed it increasingly regularly until last year when I had it cut short and stopped dying it. I probably do look older but there's nothing wrong with being older, and it's so much easier now! My hair is also in better condition. I had very dark hair, so it was a bit of a shock at first. However I have a colleague with very similar hair to mine. She still dyes hers very dark, and it's so much upkeep. I just can't be bothered with doing that for (hopefully) the next few decades!

terraced · 07/11/2023 06:53

30s and no. Happy for it to go grey (clearly my mother isn't - she keeps telling me to dye it)
