What is this academic 'style'?

And does it even exist?
From a discussion with a friend who lives a bit further south than myself! I am in rural Shropshire, if it helps.

We were talking about styles across the UK and how people dress, etc. She mentioned 'Oxford Academic' as a thing in itself, as say separate from surrounding areas. Is this a thing? I am a bit of a bumpkin so not too well up on these matters Grin
I am intrigued if only because I loved Inspector Morse, but I dare say things have moved on swiftly since then!

Does this area, particularly north Oxford have a definable 'style'? If so, what does it look like? Is it Toast, Oska, etc? My friend gave a loose description that reminded me of my love for long wool coats and swishy curls, but I would love to know more.

BTW i don't think we are talking about 'dark academia', which I am already familiar with.

I’m intrigued OP so I look forward to the answers!

I can sort of picture it in the 90's but not now somehow.

I live and work in Oxford. There’s definitely a Toast style among some senior academics, natural fabrics, layers, no makeup, natural hair pulled back. They look fabulous but Where they fall over is with shoes. Think, chic clothes and matronly black ankle boots.

To me it suggests more traditional British stylings - tweed, lambswool jumpers, a Pashley bike. Some crossover with the rural/cottage aesthetic (e.g. Barbour jackets, Hunter wellies), a bit Brideshead Revisited. The kind of thing you'd wear if you were doing the Tweed Run.

The Tweed Run: London's Metropolitan Bicycle Ride

The Tweed Run is a metropolitan bicycle ride with a bit of style. We take to the streets in our well-pressed best, and cycle through the city's iconic landmarks.

Ooh this is interesting, I would not have imagined tweed at this point in time, although I am aware of a lot of it around me, rurally.

I am presuming you refer to boots such as Blundstone? I would probably add clogs to that now, too!

This puts me instantly in mind of Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Stereotypical British Librarian.

I am very unstylish however, so Oxford Academic may be an actual fabulous look.

I'm not familiar with that particular neighbourhood but I think tweed in general is having a bit of a fashion moment right now, which is why I can no longer pick it up for a few quid at the weigh n' pay sales Angry

I have a lovely old long tweed from many moons ago at Toast, when they still had a touch of 'shaping' to their clothes. I love to swoop along in it with a trailing scarf Grin
My ideal afternoon might involve prancing about through lonely fields in it over a pair of warm pyjamas.
