Not keen on knitted dresses, are you?

I’ve seen a lot of knitted dresses online and in the shops. They are generally long and plain like a big jumper and I don’t think they would be flattering at all on me. Is anyone wearing them and what style/type/colour and what shoes/boots do you wear to go with them?

Oddly enough I've completely fallen in love with sweater dresses this year, though mine are not the 'big jumper' type - more very sleek, minimalist long dresses that happen to be knitted.

First one: High necked, long tight sleeved, cream wool maxi from Co. (Not Co.) Reduced in a sale. Absolutely beautiful thing but reaches the floor, so impractical unless I belt it shorter, which slightly spoils the shape. Belted, I've worn it with knee high boots. Full length, with big clumpy Grenson type ankle boots. Planning to try it with a short sleeved t shirt or knit worn over it when it gets colder.

Second attempt was a deep V neck, sleeveless Gabriela Hearst midi. (Massive discount in a sale.) Sent back because too big and too long and drab colour. And actually the wool would have made it too hot for sleeveless weather.

Third: ivory silk and cotton rib knit (looks like wool), sleeveless maxi from Loulou Studio. Narrow from neck to hem. Really easy to wear, Summer or Winter, with or without another layer over. Sandals or ankle boots.

I've also seen lots of cheaper versions everywhere but I don't need another for going out in. I guess the big jumper type might be nice to wear at home - but I wouldn't be prepared to pay for pure wool or cashmere just to wear for Strictly / Big Brother watching.

Damn! Meant 'not Cos'.

ChristmasQuestions · 30/10/2023 11:31

I absolutely love jumper dresses and knitted dresses. I love this time of year right through to about April as I wear them constantly.

I've got quite a straight up and down figure, not curvy at all, so it suits my shape. I've never had much luck with trousers so find dresses so much easier and more comfortable.

Tights and boots are a staple here. I have tights in black, navy, grey and maroon and find that between them I always have a colour pairing I like.

ChristmasQuestions · 30/10/2023 11:33

I don't spend a huge amount of money on clothes so mine are Primark, George, occasionally something from TK maxx, Next or M&S. I have a few Hobbs, Boden and Joules lurking from my more flush days. I love them all and get lots of compliments even on the cheaper ones.

WeRateSquirrels · 30/10/2023 11:38

It's a no from me - more on the grounds that I'd boil than anything aesthetic.

Icefoot · 30/10/2023 11:42

I like the long fitted ones, but worry they'd hang terribly with tights?

SnapdragonToadflax · 30/10/2023 11:45

Love them, wear them all winter. They do have to fit well, can't just pick up any old thing but when they're good, they really suit me. Not belted or super tight, I think they look odd.

Chelsea boots or clumpy boots with tights or leggings, depending where I'm going.

Turmerictolly · 30/10/2023 11:48

I liked the look of o e the other day but worried about being itchy and hot, particularly if you have to put a long sleeved t shirt underneath to stop the itching.

rc22 · 30/10/2023 11:49

I had one years ago from, of all places, Asda. It was amazing. So flattering and looked amazing with tights and knee high boots. Never found one as good since.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 30/10/2023 11:50

@Icefoot You need a slip the same length as the dress, then just socks and boots.

(I gave up tights over lockdown and life has been much more pleasant since ...)

It's so true, @SnapdragonToadflax - they need to fit more or less perfectly.

Spudlet · 30/10/2023 11:52

I just got a lovely black one from John Lewis Anyday. It’s a straight up and down one, midi length, polo neck. I’d say it skims rather than clings, and I love it with my biker boots and thick woolly tights. It’s an excellent Sunday dinner dress as it covers all stomach expansions caused by excessive amounts of lunch 😂

I am quite tall, and slim-ish, but with a bit of a mum-tum. I feel great in this dress. Absolutely love it.

Lentilweaver · 30/10/2023 11:52

I want one, but I fear it will be itchy and hot on the Tube. Can't wear acrylic and all the pure wool ones are too £££

PiddleOfPuppies · 30/10/2023 11:53

I love them for the reasons upthread and wear them with thick tights and chunky boots. I wear a slip from M&S underneath to stop the 'cling and climb', and add a thermal top if it's really chilly. I admit it's difficult to strip if I'm too hot but this is a rare thing - I'm cold blooded.

My best ever was from Peacocks!

BusterGonad · 30/10/2023 11:55

They are my favourite item of clothing.

Theforeverhome · 30/10/2023 11:59

They depend on a certain weight of fabric and well fitting underwear or I look like a caterpillar 🐛

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 30/10/2023 12:10

I'd always felt they were not right for me, as too many lumps and bumps. However, in the last couple of years I have challenged myself to try styles / clothing that I'd normally avoid and occasionally found a few gems, so feel it has been the right way to purchase clothing, rather than repeat styles and playing too safe. Now have two dresses from Uniqlo and very flattering too, wash brilliantly and comfortable / effortlessly stylish to wear. I wear a body under mine, to avoid underwear lines.

CharlotteBog · 30/10/2023 12:13

I LOVE a jumper dress.
I have 2 Uniqlo ones from a couple of years ago and a couple of others. They are polo neck so I wear a thermal turtle neck underneath (for warmth and itch prevention), thick black tights and boots. They are all woolly, but one is a finer wool and a bit smarter.

I am tall and slim and I think they look good on my shape.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 30/10/2023 12:13

Yes, Skims type underpinnings will help to make a dress look smoother.

Although actual Skims dresses are more designed to acknowledge and celebrate lumps, bumps, curves, etc.

LubaLuca · 30/10/2023 12:17

I love them, I've loved them since my best friend in infants wore them (too fashionable for my mum to consider 🙄).

I've just ordered a chunky grey one from M&S. Pair of thermal tights, a slip, maybe a thermal top too if it's v cold, ankle boots. Perfect for me 😊

CattingAbout · 30/10/2023 12:18

I do like them but am very picky about the style/length. Really I like them around knee length, there are lots that are far too short, and I'm not a fan of midi or longer styles.

Recently got this one and am loving it:

happyshineyperson · 30/10/2023 12:19

Yes, love the ones that are fitted on top and flare out at bottom - middle ground between the clingy bodycon ones and the loose “long jumper” type. So elegant, especially in this season’s maxi length.

@PerditaProvokesEnmity any tips on where to find discounted designer ones? General end of season sales, the OUTNET? Is there anywhere else you know of?

WhereDoYouGo1 · 30/10/2023 12:20

Maybe I should be open-minded and try a few on. I don’t feel they would suit my shape - I’m not tall and straight, I’m small with curves. I looked at the John Lewis website and the only one I liked was a Boden stripy one but that was £130 which I wouldn’t pay.

I love a wool or cashmere knitted dress! I've got broad shoulders, small waist and prominent arse so I think fitted ones hang well. I would look like a friendly yeti in a loose one.

They just need a bit of upkeep, hand washing, debobbling, stitching the odd moth hole but very cosy and sleek. Im not here for synthetics, personally. I've never found one that has kept its shape.

Asda have them again, I bought one this morning! Grey cable knit. I love them!
