Chapped lips

Midnight2290 · 24/10/2023 12:45

Hello,

I have the most chapped and dry lips. I’m trying to drink a lot more water (which is translating to cups of tea currently!!) but I’m wondering if anyone can recommend any products? I.e. lip scrubs or balms.

usually tend to use Vaseline or Carmex…

anything else for me to consider?

Whatever you use, you need to put it on at night and in the morning wipe the dry skin off with a towel or use a toothbrush. Then reapply.

I like Burts Bees intensive lip balm…I tried Nuxe but was very unimpressed and kept getting cold sores.

Fab tip!

hence why I was enquiring about lip scrubs x

shame about the Nuxe… reading reviews online, it looks really good.

It's interesting that other people say vaseline is drying. I find it very good and have very dry skin, have excema, and am allergic to a lot of things. The other thing I use on my lips is emulsifying ointment.

I agree. There seems to be such variations in responses which goes to show it’s not one size fits all.

I’ve been using Vaseline for years and years… I was just curious as to whether there were any better options out there.

I think increasing the water intake will make the most difference, and is the most important.

A lot of lip balms seem addictive in that they make your lips drier so you apply more.

My favourites are chap stick. I don't like ones with obvious flavours, I got one from Holland & Barrett advent calendar and is nice but seems a bit too coconutty.
The tinted Burt's Bees ones look good, but my DM loves them so whenever I buy one I end up giving it to her.

For the little pots and tubes, Blistex or Carmex.

Thanks, I’ll check this out as well 😊

I am looking for something intensive that’ll last through the night that I can apply before sleep too. I’m less concerned about the day time as I’m happy reapplying through out the day.

You don’t have to answer this, but I’m curious to know what medication you take? I also take a medication and I’m wondering if I’m having a similar side effect to you.

I also drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day.

Hmmm I take a lot - 4 different painkillers, iron tablets, anti depressants as pain /sleep aids, muscle relaxant, iron, thyroid tablets. If you tell me what you're taking, I can tell you if I take similar. Just don't really want the judgement here for the meds I'm on (not from you, mumsnet can be caustic sometimes 😳) . It's a real problem for me so I've been trying for months to get the best one. I loved the cocoa one from Palmers but they've changed the formula, I don't like the new one and I have no choice. I have to put lip balm on. The amount of time it lasts is a big plus for me, and the lack of texturey yuck.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 24/10/2023 19:46

And antibiotics.

If you like, I’ll DM you to maintain some privacy and prevent judgement! Sorry to ask such a personal Q! I never considered the dry lips as a side effect.

Yes to the Lasinoh lanolin nipple cream.

IdealisticCynic · 24/10/2023 20:02

A third vote for Lanisoh nipple cream! It’s magic!

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 24/10/2023 20:04

Awk it's alright I've practically said it all anyway bar the doses and brands! I've just had the most awful couple of years health wise, I absolutely HATE taking medicine but genuinely haven't had a choice. It's taken all this to make me function. And if someone stuck their beak in and made judgement on that, it would really upset me. Plus I was due a name change 😁🎅

Yeah there's one tablet that seemed to make me lick my lips more, it was notable at the time because the cuts got Really bad. Now there's no cuts at all, I'm over a week into aquaphor and have bought another 3. One for bedroom, one for work uniform, one for tiny handbag and one for crochet kit. If I keep moving one from place to place they end up lost! 🙈

SpringMeadows · 24/10/2023 20:07

Eight hour cream.

CurlyFerret · 24/10/2023 20:16

I can recommend Drunk Elephant Wonderwild Miracle Butter - beats anything else I’ve tried and I always suffer with dry lips especially now the weather is turning. Downside is the tube is large (so not good for handbag etc) and therefore pricy. I got a small tube in an advent calendar last year and you can find people selling the small sizes on eBay to try.

I am exactly the same - I need multiples for different rooms and bags, and also the car!

Me too!

CheshireCat1 · 24/10/2023 20:33

I use Utrasun lip balm all year round now as it protects from the sun and stops chapping.

Beachcomber · 24/10/2023 20:33

Vitamin B12 supplements sorted it out for me.

I agree blistex relief cream is great ! Gently exfoliate your life with a soft toothbrush and warm weather and use the cream over night Smile

My life certainly could do with some exfoliating 😄

jokes aside, thanks for the advice. Quite a good thing to do post brushing teeth… that’s why I was thinking to use a gentle lip scrub after brushing teeth in morning and evening and then using something like blistex.

Lips lol .. I have used a few scrubs from lush before there ok it's basically just sugar to exfoliate there are some recipes on line to make your own if you have time or cba. I think body shop do one too but toothbrush is the easiest cheapest and effective Blush

The Nuxe Reve de Miel Honey Lip Balm, which you can get in M&S, is the only thing that worked for me.
The cute little glass pot, not the stick.
Bit spendy but lasts for ages.

Only thing that works for me as well. My lips used to be so dry they would split and stay that way all winter.
I tried everything and nothing worked. The nuxe did work. I now use it before bed at night. I only need it once a day and my lips have not split since. A pot lasts me about a year.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 24/10/2023 21:11

The nuxe one in a jar is my favourite to use at night. It feels like a mask rather than a balm, so it’s nourishing. I don’t mind the one in the tube but it’s not worth paying loads more for.

another one I really like that I don’t think has been mentioned is the o’keeffe one in an orange tube. Didn’t rate the one in the jar, but the tube is good. It’s also got a bit of ‘grip’ rather than being really glossy like a lot of balms.

I like the blistex one but it gave my lips a white cast unless I made sure I only used a tiny bit. The eight hour cream lip balm is really nice but I go through it too quickly to justify repurchasing for the cost! I have used normal eight hour cream before though and it works in a pinch but doesn’t last that long on me!

the laneige sleep mask is meant to be nice, but I bought a dupe version and didn’t like it enough to shell out twenty quid for the real one!

stardust777 · 24/10/2023 21:17

This is my current favourite:

Might be worth considering it could be your toothpaste? Only certain ones don’t dry my lips out. I find brushing my teeth then washing my face helps as it removes any excess toothpaste. If my lips start getting dry it’s usually because I picked up a different type.

Drinking lots of water a day doesn’t really hydrate your skin. The whole 8 glasses of water a day is a bit of a myth and only based on one scientific paper.

Balmond’s skin balm is the only thing that I’ve found makes a reliable difference to very dry lips. Just out it on a few times a day.
