I have a style copycat

HouseofSaltRock · 19/10/2023 22:23

I have a very defined style at work, keeping everything very simple, but using one accent - be it shoes or accessories. A colleague has complimented me on my style a few times, they I have noticed subtle changes in her appearance. Didn’t really connect the two until this week, when she wore almost identical “uniform” to mine, with actual shoes exactly the same, unusual colour and texture.

I am really annoyed about this and feel like this is a competition I have never tried to win yet somehow I am in it now.

Can't really say if you're being reasonable or not unless we see how 'individual' your style
Is. Can you show us?
Failing that bud say rise above it. Life's too short

Don't be daft. She's not studiously copying her look on a daily basis down in some basement.

Why would the op want to wear unflattering clothes to work? Wouldn't the other lady just think 'Amanda doesn't look as good as she usually does'.

I do worry about the cognitive reasoning of some MNers…

ZolaBudd · 20/10/2023 13:04

Op. Your red shoes aren’t unique to you

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/10/2023 13:25

Your style sounds like mine (and many other people's!).
Sorry if I've offended you.

Where did you get that bag from?

Growlybear83 · 20/10/2023 13:29

This is a really bizarre thread. Why does it matter if someone else dresses in a very similar way to you?

JuliaJohnstone · 20/10/2023 13:30

Can you share a photo of the sort of style you mean? That would help me decide who is unreasonable!

Have you never seen Single White Female ? Grin

Growlybear83 · 20/10/2023 13:39

No I haven't. I still think this is a very odd thing to get worked up about though.

thaegumathteth · 20/10/2023 13:43

Well this is the cringiest thing i've read in a while.

'definied style' - either you've explained it badly or you absolutely do not have some kind of unique personal style at all.

Sigh.

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 20/10/2023 13:48

I had this at work but I thought it was quite flattering, she used to text in the morning to ask if I was wearing a particular skirt as we’d had a few occasions basically wearing the same outfit! I didn’t find it annoying but another colleague commented and said it would have driven her mad 🤷‍♀️

Just keep wearing what you like, others will pick up on the fact she’s copying you.

PinkArt · 20/10/2023 13:49

Off topic but thank you for the reminder about Laden Showroom @GonnaGetGoingReturns! I used to pop in there when browsing for vintage handbags on Brick Lane when I first moved to London.

LookItsMeAgain · 20/10/2023 13:49

@theduchessofspork & @FindRachel - did you not sense an undercurrent to my suggestion of sarcasm? Sorry if you missed it.

NatashaDancing · 20/10/2023 14:01

I have a very defined style at work, keeping everything very simple, but using one accent - be it shoes or accessories

Apart from the wearers of "frumpy, over priced, Amish, sack dresses, Bodenesque, clothes from demented Scandinavian designers or demented Low Countries designers or demented British designers, Robin from Ghosts gilets, old lady, my granny wouldn't wear that" clothes about 95% of posters claim they

Meniscus · 20/10/2023 14:11

As far as I can gather the only thing the colleague did was to come to work wearing the same shoes as the OP. The rest of her clothing was an ‘almost identical uniform’, which, from how the OP describes her ‘defined style’ may easily just mean something as generic as ‘wearing all black’ or ‘silk shirt and wide-legged trousers’.

fluffyguineapig · 20/10/2023 14:14

I just can't see this being a big deal - take it as a compliment, she thinks you dress well and thinks your looks are worth copying. Unless your outfits are really unusual then I doubt anyone else would notice.

Intriguedbythis · 20/10/2023 14:24

I had this with a wonderful friend, she copied everything , my perfume ( unusual obscure little known ), my hair style, my sweaters, my shoes , my toiletries. She would ask about everything I bought and would show up in the same. It bothered me until I said to my mum and she pointed out I should be flattered, so I was.

oh forgot to mention, I was 14.

wouldn’t give a fig if someone copied me as it doesn’t harm you at all.

No, I didn't. Not even slightly!

Me too. In fact, I think it’s absolutely bonkers that grown women could spend any time worrying about this.

This thread has been quite the eye-opener.

Growlybear83 · 20/10/2023 14:26

Have you been drinking? 😳

It was sarcasm.

So many posters claim that they have a "keeping everything simple with one accent style' It gets said on every thread about how to dress, for every event or purpose. It's hardly going to be difficult to "copy".

The OP would have a point if her style guru is Helena Bonham Carter.

Steev · 20/10/2023 15:55

What shoes are they? I love shoes.

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 20/10/2023 17:55

Some of the posters here have had an empathy bypass - or else they're jealous of OP of being so stylish that a colleague wants to copy her! Honestly.

OP, I understand why this is so annoying. Here's hoping your colleague will get bored of it in a few weeks as she finds her own style?

fallgilmore · 20/10/2023 17:58

Jealous 😂

Love it when someone says that we are jealous of someone we disagree with when we simply just disagree with her.
