If you are bra band size 32 or 34..

What does your ribcage measure?
I just measured mine because I think I've changed size, and it's 29. But one of my 34D bras feels very tight (but just right) on, albeit I think the cup size is too big now. I thought I was 32 now, but online guides say 30, surely this cannot be right when a 34 bra feels OK?

I can't go for measurement under any circumstances so pls don't recommend that. Thanks for any information.

What clothes size do you wear? If you are a 6/8 then you probably do indeed want a 30 inch bra.

I'm a large size 10 (I've been losing weight and just moved from small 12/large 10 to probably just a 10, hence the measuring).

I measure 31 and wear 32 in most.
In some styles I wear a 30 because sizes are so inconsistent.

I like my band to be pretty snug as I have bigger boobs (GG/H) and a tighter band just gives the best support.
I just buy loads of vaguely tight sizes and try them on to get the best fit then order 3/4 of the same style

KatharinaRosalie · 17/10/2023 09:04

The thing is that if the cups don't fit, bra will feel tight, even if the back itself is too big. A friend of mine said her 36B was too tight and wanted to go buy a 38B - I checked and she really needed a 34E. Which was not too tight, but gave her much better shape and support.

dementedpixie · 17/10/2023 11:59

I measure 37inches under bust and wear a 36 back as I have squidgy fat there. I find 38 isn't supportive enough

Graciebobcat · 17/10/2023 12:10

TU comfort lace I find quite reliable on sizing. M&S can be very small in the band size.

Comefromaway · 17/10/2023 12:13

I'm a bra size 34 DD/E and my rib cage measures 33. I can also squeeze into a 32 F

I'm a size 12-14 clothes size.

If your rib cage measures 29 then it's very likely that you need a smaller band size but a much larger cup size. What does your overbust measure?

madeinmanc · 16/10/2023 17:23

I think about 34, I'll double check though.

I'd try a 30 E or maybe a 32 DD if you really don't get on with a 30 band.

StamppotAndGravy · 17/10/2023 12:40

I'm 30E measured according to BoB, but with quite a lot of muscle from swimming. I'm in agony with anything smaller than a 34. Thankfully 30E is actually fairly small so the bounce from a much looser or soft bra isn't considerable and I'd rather go for comfort

londonmummy1966 · 17/10/2023 14:36

You could try ordering a 32 and the equivalent 30 sister size in the same style from Brastop to see how they compare - so if you normally wear a 34 D perhaps try a 32 E and a 30 F. Then you can send back the one that doesn't work for you.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 17/10/2023 14:44

I'm a 10/12 and wear a 30e

dementedpixie · 17/10/2023 14:44

Sister sizes of 34D would be 32DD and 30E

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 17/10/2023 16:15

I can't get on with the boob or bust method or sister sizes. According to boob or bust I was a 32FF. I ordered many bras in that size and the band was like a boa constrictor and the cup too baggy. I'm a 34C and if my band goes smaller it's too tight even if I go up a cup size.

Purpleavocado · 17/10/2023 16:38

I gave up, I think I'm around 30dd or e at the moment but they are so uncomfortable, I wear M&S small size crop tops instead and they are so comfortable. I like that they are a little bit minimising as well.

lindyloo57 · 17/10/2023 17:40

I measure a 31 and wear a 34 even that feel tight and leaves deep red marks at the end of the day, my fullness is 38

dementedpixie · 17/10/2023 17:43

@lindyloo57 what cup size are you wearing? Should be around an E or F cup given your measurements (on a 32 back)

MariaVT65 · 17/10/2023 17:53

Hi Op, i previously trained as a bra fitter :)

If you’re around a size 10 now, you’d usually be about a band size 32 or 34.

Measuring your bust isn’t accurate IME and it also greatly depends on the shape of your bust and the bra style. Bra materials also make a difference. A cotton one may be a bit looser than a mesh/lace one.

Do you have a style of bra you generally prefer? Tshirt? Full cup? Plunge? Balcony?

Trial and error is best. I would order some different bras in different sizes to try them on and them send them back.

The main support should come from your band instead of depending on the straps. And the wire should not sit on your breast tissue.

I measure 32 and wear a 32. Unfortunately with a FF cup 😮.

Thanks everyone, you'd think I'd fully have an understanding of this by my forties!

I've just found a similar post that's helped:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4663741-can-anyone-help-me-with-bra-sizing

The only thing is, everyone says go up a cup size as you reduce the band but as I've lost weight, I think I need to reduce the cup size too.

I don't want to be 30 anything because they're hardly available!

Sadly losing weight doesn't always make the difference you expect.

Two years ago I went from 69kg to 52kg, so a massive 25% weight loss and very noticeable as I'm only 5ft 1in tall and small framed.

I went to Bravissimo to be measured and was very disappointed to discover that although my band size had dropped from a 34 band being uncomfortably stretched and tight to a size 30 or 32 being comfy my cup size was still F or FF.

I think the fact was that although I had lost weight all over, like a lot of post menopausal women I carried most of my fat on my stomach and thighs not my upper body. So although my bra size didn't change much my jean size went from a 14 to an 8, my waist has returned and I no longer have cellulite.

on the plus side, although the numbers on my bra haven't changed much my boobs definitely look trimmer and less matronly now. I can go out in a fitted t shirt without feeling self conscious and I no longer overflow a v neck line. Numbers don't tell the whole story.

lindyloo57 · 18/10/2023 07:03

I wear a 34 D i do have a 34dd but I the cups are loose at the top, and the bra rubs under my arms,

Umph · 18/10/2023 07:09

I measure the same as you (29) and wear a 30 or 32. Technically a 32 is ‘too big’ but I have very little ‘padding’ on my ribs (plenty elsewhere though!) so sometimes find it more comfortable.

TheresaBouvey · 18/10/2023 07:40

I measure 31 and wear a 34C

i hate wearing my bras tight, I wear mine quite loose fitting as more comfy snd I have small boobs anyway

dementedpixie · 18/10/2023 08:00

@Middleagedmeangirls a 30F has a smaller cup volume than a 34F as the cup size is relative to back size. The equivalent cup size of a 34F on a 30 back size is 30G so your breasts have decreased in volume.
