I’m getting married in 2025 so got a while to choose a dress. Looking at various styles i’m struck by how dated some look already - strapless satin ones that everyone was wearing look dated, as do ones with the little diamanté waist belt.

whats likely to stay in fashion for the next few years? I like boho style lace dresses but can already see they’ll date.

(I’m asking out of interest really, ultimately I’ll go with whatever I love and what suits me but am interested in the fashion angle

An evil clown would wear this, possibly carrying a balloon on a very long string.

I love their weird seam that runs through S&B. For ages someone posted photos of massively oversized suits in response to stuff like MOB outfits and summer wedding guest dresses.

"Dated" isn't the same thing as "of its time". My grandmothers' wedding dresses are obviously from the 1940s and you wouldn't really wear them now, but they're still beautiful and a slice of history. They aren't dated, they're just 1940s.

The 80s were a blip....

I’ve just had a look at Alan Hannah and am surprised at the 80s influence in their new designs.

I’m a big lover of big wedding dresses and like this style but I expect boho you’re looking for more form fitting?

It's because they're the decade that style forgot and the epitome of stuff that really is dated (ie hideous) as opposed to just a slice of time.

Although we do have those amazing links upthread. The blue harlequin gift wrap monstrosity is the greatest and clearly takes the prize, but that's not to say there were no other absolute clangers in there.

anon2022anon · 10/10/2023 12:38

Ah, it's nice to see some more out there designs! Somebody is buying them.

I'm not a big fan of the lace, boho designs- they're very, very pretty, but absolutely will point to a 2020-2025 wedding, maybe up to 2027 and beyond but definitely of its time.

I'm not currently planning a wedding, but hoping to shortly and I've been looking at dresses, as you do! My current wish is glitter. Not embellishments, but full.on sparkle. But I'm struggling to find many that aren't a very low V, which I'm not a fan of- I would prefer a racerback, halterneck or discreet V neck.
I would love the sparkle of the first 2 dresses (which are both out of my budget!) But the shape of the third.

Even a timeless dress will be surrounded by people in current fashions for the photos.

anon2022anon · 10/10/2023 12:42

Not entirely sure why everyone is spending their time on picking apart thos other dresses, rather than offering their own opinions though? Seems a bit counter productive, and the other posters aren't slating other wedding dresses, just showing what they enjoy. Show us what you like instead! I want to see pretty dresses 😍

anon2022anon · 10/10/2023 12:43

My friend runs a higher end wedding dress shop and she got married this year. She stocks lots of boho style, but avoided all of them for her own wedding, and went for slim fitting with puffy off the shoulder straps/ short sleeves.

Possimpible · 10/10/2023 12:46

I think this is gorgeous from Made With Love. I think the glitter is a bit different to the lacey ones that are a bit ubiquitous. Similar silhouette to mine so I am biased! Any good OP? (or @anon2022anon ?)

Ah, I see - it’s because the OP said

i love the 80s outfit too!

presumably in response to the suit I posted at the start of the thread. I should have corrected the misunderstanding. Those photos were from a wedding at the beginning of October this year. I imagine the bride is too busy enjoying her honeymoon to be concerned with MN posts …

I don't get that either - unless it was supposed to refer to the photograph you posted? Looking as if it had been taken in the 80s,?

Not quite sure why your pointing out Cawley studio now does bridal and my replying to you has caused such outrage.

MayIDestroyYou · 10/10/2023 12:56

🤷🏽‍♀️

gotomomo · 10/10/2023 12:58

@Anothernamechangeee

That's my bugbear about this page though actually I've had great ideas from posters who aren't into shapeless sacks costing £300.

The trick when choosing is to get what suits you combined with being comfortable enough to wear for many hours with pulling at it, adjusting it etc. for this reason I would never choose a strapless dress or one that can't take a conventional bra (I'm not short changed in that department! Grin)

I'm not sure what i would do as it's second time around, we haven't decided if we'll actually do the paperwork even, but I'm contemplating in case we decideSmile though with adult DD's I'm expecting to get bullied into a proper dress

NatashaDancing · 10/10/2023 12:59

Luckingfovely · 10/10/2023 10:47

@Anothernamechangeee this thread has been an utter stream of madness Grin

Apart from the Pronovius dress and the CBK classic there's not an item on here that anyone would actually wear in real life.

It might help if you shared a couple pics of things you do like at the moment and ask for feedback on whether and what elements will date?

I think going more specific might cut down on some of the more acid-tripping-in-1986 devotees.

Well clearly someone did - hence the photos posted of someone wearing Cawley studio. Which the OP liked.

Possimpible · 10/10/2023 13:00

Echobelly · 10/10/2023 12:16

Just wear what you like regardless of fashion? Tbh, wedding dress fashion changes are so slow and subtle you're not going to look back and think 'Oh god, that looks so 2023!'

I don't think this is necessarily true. Capes were having a moment for the past few years (possibly hidden by all the cancelled covid weddings), and I think that will date photos as a wedding around 2020.

@NatashaDancing @MayIDestroyYou we've moved on, but @MayIDestroyYou you did say 'remember Droopy and Browns - an outstandingly romantic and innovative British brand that was around in the final thirty years of the last century' - so that does cover the 80s, plus even the quality of the second and third photos you posted look dated. That's not meant to offend, I assume the bride chose her outfits and photographer because she was aiming for that sort of vibe.

Fireisland · 10/10/2023 13:03

Those Cawley photos are the worst bridal outfit I've ever seen. Just hideous 😂

NatashaDancing · 10/10/2023 13:05

RachelGreensHair · 10/10/2023 11:41

To be fair, it's the same two posters who appear on every thread with these OTT bizarre links. The ones today are something else entirely!!

So you keep saying. Why don't you post a suggestion yourself then?

I didn't know Cawley Studio did bridal, or that its "bridal wear" isn't particularly bridal. There may be others who find that useful information.

MayIDestroyYou · 10/10/2023 13:08

This is what you wrote above, @Possimpible:

Why do people need to ruin S&B threads by pushing an agenda? Go and find the non-traditional wedding dress thread, it's obvious that OP wanted a discussion about bridal fashion and trends, not the most unique outfits you can find. Look at this ffs 😂that's from the Cawley bridal collection, a bargain at 2.5k. Or this if you love court jester vibes. I'll pass.

It was highly offensive.

I’m not sure why you feel it’s your business to tell me where and how I should post on a public forum. And I don’t think it’s the first time you’ve done it. Please be aware I will report every time you attempt to drive me off this board.

I liked it when I thought it was an actual photo from the 80s! It’s definitely not my style for a 2025 wedding… nor fits the “boho” brief!

OfMark87 · 10/10/2023 13:19

I got married last week and my dress was a stella York, have a look on her instagram lots of different styles

NashEnquirer · 10/10/2023 13:23

My instinct is that the less "dramatic" dress, the less likely it is to eventually look dated, but obviously that's not a hard and fast rule. We've definitely moved from what I think of boho lace/vintage teacups/Sienna Miller in her Primrose Hill phase to what I think of more an an "Insta bride aesthetic" - i.e. much more sparkle, glitter, and heavy beading, with wedding themes tending more towards the velvet/brass/mid-century aesthetic that's hard to avoid now.

FWIW I love the trousersuit in the Cawley Studio bridal section - it wouldn't suit me but I love the look, sort of early Kristin Scott-Thomas, or Emma Thompson marrying Branagh.

OP, you might find the Vogue.com weddings section interesting - I'm always fascinated by the weddings they feature and it's great for people-watching and guest outfit ideas. I'm not saying the styles seen there won't date, but there's maybe a broader range of choices/inspiration there.

Also, I've seen a lot of bridal jumpsuits at recent weddings, including convertible ones where the dress turned out to be a tulle-type overskirt concealing tailored wide-leg trousers. I'm a fan, but I do like a bridal trouser!

Anothernamechangeee · 10/10/2023 13:24

Anyway. Styles I think look quite dated already:

  • mikado and the heavy fabric
  • crepey cross over strapless dresses
  • diamante belts

styles I can see dating quickly:

  • capes
  • jumpsuits (much as I love them)

styles I love:

  • soft, flowy lace
  • square neckline (classic)
  • sheath dresses in a beautiful fabric, plain
  • dresses without huge amounts of fabric as they look uncomfortable to move in

SurprisedWithAHorse · 10/10/2023 13:26

If you've got a clear idea of what you like, OP, and it sounds as though you have, then I'd find a good seamstress and just get one designed and made for you.
