Hello again to everyone from the last thread and welcome to anyone who enjoys talking about this aesthetic .. and if you have photos to share even better!

We've been discussing woollen jumpers, tweed skirts and jackets (with and without elbow patches), flannel trousers, fair isle tank tops, leather boots, culottes, berets and many other appealing garments, and more recently novels, poetry, libraries in general and even home decor with a DA vibe. Plus tortoiseshell spectacles and lorgnettes. I don't think we've touched on DA hairstyles yet although I've been giving that some thought ..

A DA quote I came across the other day: "I declare after all, there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." (P&P of course)

If curling up in a wing-backed armchair in front of a log fire, with candles flickering, sipping tea from a china mug while reading your Jane Austen or Bronte novel sounds appealing, this thread might be for you. Or if you just like the clothes - that works too.

Our first thread below:

And where to find it? This is how I want to dress this winter. More skirts and dresses rather than trousers as my waist is not the best and the trous...

My autumn wardrobe came together beautifully in the end (after lurking, and also posting on this thread on another name back at the very start).

My core garments have been:

fallen-leaves orange cords (Levi's, oddly - I was looking for the amazing orange Superdry ones from last year, and these were what came up in my searches instead)
a variety of cashmere and wool jumpers - green, rust, navy, mustard, black
midi skirts in variety of textures and materials, but especially a knitted brown midi skirt from Toast which isn't really my style to wear out, but am LIVING in at home because it's so thick and warm. Who needs central heating?
And some Anthropologie pieces from the LAST time all this stuff was in fashion, about 20 years ago. Am quite smug about still fitting into it! Wish I knew where my tops from back then have gone though.

I have quite a lot of (inexpensive) velvet in the right colours, so have been able to draw a deep breath and feel okay about Toast this year!

All of this, except the Anthropologie stuff, is via Ebay and Vinted.

I also have two coats on rotation, both & Other Stories, for a black-based palette, and a brown/orange-based palette.

This is the first year in ages I have felt my look has come together really. Everything goes with everything else, so I can mix and match a LOT.

Loaaaads of great ideas and inspo from this thread, which I have kept a close eye on!

I need a hat though. I wish there as more range for womens hats out there - it never seems to catch on (again) but it's not like our heads have stopped needing to be warm over the last 100 years, is it?? I used to wear little cute ones in my 20's, but I was intentionally looking for a slightly costumey look then anyway.

In the 70's and 80's my Mum still wore a headscarf regularly. I wish they were still in style! Ebay is positively bristling with Hermes ones in every conceivable colourway.

It doesn't matter if it catches on or not; are we not trailblazers?
I wear hats all the time; they are warm, and I could argue no outfit is complete without.........
Have you considered a muelbauer?

Bookist · 23/11/2023 21:21

Absolutely! To quote Ms. Chanel "I don't follow fashion. I am fashion."

IndianSummer78 · 24/11/2023 00:57

I love that quote Bookist and I feel the same way.

I made a bonnet last year. It was pink, with white hearts on it.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 24/11/2023 07:48

We are definitely trailblazers!

(Early) Christmas lunch out today. I am wearing - black tights; black Mary Janes; forest green knee-length cotton A-line skirt; black sweater; new red cloche hat and this costume jewellery brooch.

I am still quite conservative in my approach... gradually expanding my comfort zone. A work in process! It's such tremendous fun though!

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 24/11/2023 07:49

Oh and bookwise I am re-reading I Capture The Castle. I have noticed that in winter I often go back to old comfort reads.

Mirabai · 24/11/2023 08:00

“Fancy Mortmain sleeping through all this”.

triggers34 · 24/11/2023 08:19

welcome the newcomers

@OrangePumpkinLobelia I am considering buying myself a brown satchel backpack , for Dh to gift me. I like the one in seasalt except it's blue. my local leather and sheepskin shop has the most beautiful ones, I'd never thought of them , I also saw nice ones in the national trust. So sorry no links but I might steal that Etsy book idea .

@venus7 your wardrobe sounds perfect.

My coat pictured up-thread has arrived , it was described as vintage but it honestly looks brand new and very Toast like . Definitely wool I'm wondering if it's from a sample sale no labels at all.

Have a good day every one 😊

triggers34 · 24/11/2023 08:22

@TheHoundOf sorry it was you I meant to quote re Xmas gifts Blush

triggers34 · 24/11/2023 08:24

@DarkAcademia your wardrobe sounds lovely

Heffapotamus · 24/11/2023 09:20

Hi - hope you don't mind me joining. I've been lurking from the start and think I have finally found my style home at last (and I'm nearly 60!)
I've been scouring charity shops for items. Task for the weekend is altering a man's wool jacket to fit me 😁
Spent ages trawling vinted too for shoes with a period flavour.
I'm really enjoying myself 😁

TressiliansStone · 24/11/2023 13:26

Most of these are edge to edge, but another realisation is the searching for "cardigan clasp" on eBay gets you lots of suitable joiners, if like me too many loose, flying things turn you into a walking Health & Safety hazard.

helenahandcart78 · 24/11/2023 13:57

Hello tribe! Haven't been on for a while so have lots to catch up on - looking forward to immersing myself in DA loveliness this evening.

Had a bit of time over lunch today so was mulling over suitable outfits for Christmas events I have lined up.

I've indulged my preppy side with the trainers. And I'm trying to incorporate a bit of glitz and festive colours. Not sure whether I've gone too heretical though! All thoughts and ideas welcome...

helenahandcart78 · 24/11/2023 13:58

And a couple more...

Lakeland Leathers do a nice line in backpacks, lovely quality.

www.lakelandleather.co.uk/search?q=Backpack

I’m on the hunt for some lace up leather ankle boots. So many I’ve seen are laced up but then have a zip on the side ??? Why??
Sent for Doc Martens but they were too narrow, ladies style, & I don’t have wide feet really. We live very near the Lanx factory & shop but all their women’s ones are made on a D fitting last which is Clark’s narrowest fit.
You wouldn’t think it would be so hard. Considering Solovair which seem to be a bit wider but I hate buying shoes online without being able to try them on first.

Heffapotamus · 24/11/2023 18:06

Re leather ankle boots, try Memery shoes or American Duchess. There are also loads on Vinted at the moment.

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/11/2023 19:34

If you have worn knee high, lace-up boots to go through airport security then you will understand exactly why those boots sometimes have zips! My ankles and knees are too bolloxed to cope with any of my beloved boots any more, which makes me extremely sad. But going to Norway in my lace up Timberlands and having to remove them at security was quite a low point...

(I have the full set of knee and hip replacements, so I invariably set off the scanners)

Darklane · 24/11/2023 19:42

I wish I could have a replacement spine 🙁

SqueakyDinosaur · 24/11/2023 20:23

I'd just like an entire replacement body, preferably in a size 12.

worstofbothworlds · 24/11/2023 21:27

I'm trying to buy a hat on Vinted. I've given up.

I have new boots. I have a foot problem so got wide fit. I might polish them darker.

I also need a beret - I have a very large head and all the shops where you can try on hats are not open any more - so I may have to knit one. I do quite fancy a tam o shanter actually.

I'm considering purchasing those exact boots following a foot injury, @worstofbothworlds . Could I ask, do they look good IRL? And have plenty of depth for a swollen, misshaped foot? I'm hoping they will look nice with my midi-length cord skirts and tights, as well as tweed and brown trousers. I really must get boots ASAP due to the impending weather...

If it helps, I've been eyeing up the berets on House of Bruar as they offer multiple sizes in many different colours (albeit a little pricier than other outlets)

worstofbothworlds · 24/11/2023 21:35

They are nice but could be darker. They come in two depths/widths and there's a measuring guide on the Wide Fit Shoes website.
They are also very comfy! Only mildly annoying feature is the laces keep coming off the tabs if you don't do them up tightly enough.
